The library was cold, the staff having cranked up the air conditioning against the hot summer weather. Lily made a face as she stepped through the doors by herself and slipped on the jacket she had in her arms, nose wrinkling in distaste.

The girl's mother had dropped her off just moments before while going off to run some errands in town -- Lily was told to stay in the library only and she had her mother's cellphone number (it had occurred to Lily then how odd it seemed for a witch to carry a mobile phone, but times had changed) in case of an emergency.

Other than killing time and needing to grab a book for a short paper she had to do for a summer class (why her mother had seen fit to sign her up for something as terrible as summer courses, Lily would never know), she wanted to find something on bugs. That was one of her hobbies, bugs. And now that things had warmed up, the insects seemed to be coming out in full force which meant it was a perfect opportunity to go collecting.

Meandering over to the appropriate section, Lily took a few books down from their shelves and went to sit in the reading area, flipping through them to see if they had what she was looking for.

Yasstra could not fit in any car she had yet to find, and so traveling meant walking. Luckily, she was gifted with an exoskeleton and thin, wiry muscle, so she could undoubtedly make it mile upon miles if she had to. Today's trip was to the library, her son perched on her spider abdomen with her daughter in his arms. She held an umbrella up over the children, but upon entering the building and finding a seat, she realized that Dylan's face had already colored pink around the cheeks and nose. Damn.

"You can go look at whatever you want, just don't leave this level, okay?" she said, plopping down in two chairs placed side-by side.

"I'm gonna read to Emily some."

"Okay," Dylan nodded, then heading off for the books in the Children's section, or so Yasstra thought. Instead, he took a swift left turn, hands behind his back, and headed for biology. What a strange little boy.

Lily had found some useful information, but not what she was looking for, exactly. It would probably help her out a great deal if she knew what she was looking for in the first place, but she figured it would come to her as she went. It didn't matter much, anyway. Her body had adjusted to the temperature difference and now she was enjoying the coolness of the building and how could one not enjoy themselves when surrounded by books?

Getting up, she politely set the books on a nearby cart and went wandering off, this time to find the books she needed for her report. It was going to be some stuffy, history of Gaia thing and while the world did have a rich history, it wasn't something she wanted to look up when one shouldn't even be in school and should be outside enjoying themself.

As she walked, she passed by the biology section, took a few stops beyond it, stopped, and then double backed. Yup. There was a little boy. In the biology section. He didn't look very old and the girl figured that maybe he had gotten lost on his way to the children's section.

With an easy smile that came with dealing with young kids (having two younger sisters and two younger brothers would do that), she approached the boy. "Are you lost?"

Dylan looked up, looking the blurry image of the girl over with trembling eyes. Truth be told, people often assumed that he was in the wrong place. Although his vocabulary stretched far beyond that of a toddler, his reading skills were only slightly above-average and he thus only caught every few words in these medically-written volumes. It was the pictures he liked the most.

"No," he replied finally, pointing to a table, "Mother is over there and I am over here."

Lily paused, opened her mouth to respond, then closed it again. Well, the kid knew where he was and his mom wasn't too far off and... okay, spider person. We'll get back to that.

She coughed lightly to fill the silence, then tried again, "Oh, no, I meant... Well, you're in the biology section and I thought maybe you were looking for children's..?"

"No," Dylan said politely enough, trying to pull a rather heavy volume from a shelf above his head. It seemed to be about animal anatomy.

"I like the pictures in these."

Meanwhile, Yasstra was reading Pat the Bunny to a slightly wriggly and content Emily.

Lily reached out to catch the book and ensure its safe passage from the shelf to the little boy's hands. His reasoning made sense, she guessed. The pictures could be pretty interesting.

"So that's your mom over there?" The girl nodded her head in the direction of Yasstra, suddenly glad that her own mother was a very human shaped witch.

Dylan gave the girl a grateful smile, but when the book was finally down he clutched it to his chest defiantly. He was a big boy, and he could certainly carry his own books!

"Mmhm," he replied, giving a little nod as he followed the girl's finger. As Driders went. Yasstra had gotten lucky. Her Drow genes had overtaken the usual monstrous and spiny face and torso, giving her a relatively human (if not oddly-colored) top, and a rather run-of-the-mill spidery bottom.

No matter how Yasstra's genetics had evened out, that was a mighty big bug. Lily knew it was rude but really couldn't help herself, staring blatantly at the Drider woman. Dude. She was kinda awesome looking, okay.

"Coooool." Lily breathed, grinning a little shakily. "My mom's a witch. Uhm, not the kind that turns people into toads." It was important that Dylan was informed of that, of course.

Dylan wasn't entirely sure what a witch was to begin with, so her statement was kind of lost on him.

"Okay," he said, and then just started wandering back toward his new mother. If the girly he had just met wanted to follow, she could. She seemed interested, anyway!

One day, her curiosity was going to kill her. She would be walking down the street and a huge truck would just bowl her over with the word 'CURIOSITY' written on the side. Well. Lily supposed there were worse ways to go, though following a rather eerie boy back to his Drider mother certainly wasn't up on the top.

With a gulp, both nervous and excited, Lily followed after Dylan, eyes trained on his mother the entire time. It was then that she noticed the infant, but didn't pick up on anything odd about her. As a matter of fact, at the sight of the baby, she seemed to relax a little. "Is that your sister?"

"Mmhm," Dylan said again, taking a seat kiddy-corner to his mother, "That's Emily." He was very proud of his little sister!

Yasstra looked up then, smiling softly. She knew to keep her face pleasant to make the rest of her body less fear-inducing.

"Hullo!" she chirped to the new girl. Dylan was absorbed in a sketched diagram of a dissected frog.

"She's cute!" Lily complimented. She had seen many babies in her time, so she would know.

The smile turned into one of nervousness as she turned it on Yasstra. It wasn't so much what the woman was anymore, but that she was a stranger and her own mother wasn't here. Stupid, Lily. Stupid. "Hi... I'm, um, Lily. I just wanted... to make sure... he was okay..." Which sounded dumb now, since Dylan was obviously fine, despite his own strange looks.

"Mmhm, he's fine," Yasstra smiled, avoiding flashing her fangs, "That's very kind of you to make sure."

Emily wriggled, nose wrinkling an gdrimacing widely. She looked perhaps like she was crying, but there was no noise.

"Okay, well..." Lily began, repeating herself at this point for lack of anything else to say. "Like I said, just wanted to make sure..."

The girl was staring openly at Yasstr's spider half. She knew it was rude, but she had fallen from politeness at this point and there was no going back. "...That is so cool," Lily exclaimed in a hushed whisper.

The infant's strange face she had noted, but it didn't seem to penetrate her skull that it was odd. The baby was only yawning, right? Or maybe gearing up for one of those awful silent screams that broke into a terrible wail one of her sisters was so fond of?
