|°~ The Wolf is not meant for city life ~°|

|°~ But in the wilderness ~°|

In my opinion, first of all its the history. Pit bulls are being bred solely for fighting, their large heads hard to engulf in anothers mouth, therefore making it harder for them to die, and having that grip like a crocodile and having such a will to not let it go. It's also why they have their ears cut, no, its not for fashion, its for fighting. The ears cannot be grabbed if they are cut.

Now, I've seen some sweet pit bulls, but I still don't know about letting them be around children, because say one accidentally hurts one, and then it accidentally bites and that clamping behavior kicks in, that is scary. However, they would be good with older children.

Another reason why they are considered dangerous, OVER BREEDING. Drug dealers, fighters, they all produce many very very dangerous puppies. It's like the rodeo, they take the meanest buffest pit bull and breed it, then the cycle continues. Then people like the ASPCA are smart enough to release them into the cities where they do again what they were made to do, kill. I haven't seen them do that recently, but I'm sure it does still happen. Even if people like the ASPCA don't take the dog, that dog could still escape and do what it was bred to do, kill.

So, therefore, I think the main reason is breeding solely for aggression.

As said here, they also were bred out and into a mastiff. Mastiffs are obedient and usually laid back, again, breeding bad quality dogs and also backyard breeding seems to have gotten them a reputation for being hyper like the golden retrievers.

It seems the pit bull been specifically bred to be scary. I think this needs to stop, then the outlawing will stop. But, I'm afraid that possibly breeding out the "scary" factor may make it a whole 'nother dog.

Now, I don't love pitbulls, but I wouldn't say I hate them either. But I'm really interested in the "outlawing bully breeds" topic that I've seen here and there.

I know the bully breeds have been outlawed where I live, yet sadly there are still pit bulls here, and one pit bull mix killed a cat that was in my grandfather's front yard, that cat died in his arms and he was sick for a few days. {My grandfather.} We raised that cat from a baby, and we then gave her to my grandfather because we could no longer keep her, and he got very, very attached. One dog was found and put down, the other was not, but for this reason I don't want to live in a pit bull area. But, even after that I don't hate pit bulls, strange I know. I hate the owner more.

Anyways, share your ideas and opinions on pit bulls, and if you can include your source behind your thinking. Mine is solely off personal experience.

Please try to stay as calm as possible in this topic, remember everyone has their opinion that they are entitled to.

[Edit]

It also seems the buffer the pit the more aggressive... That's interesting.

Thanks for making this thread Its Wolfeh, I agree that Pit Bulls should be good with older children, Pit Bulls are known to be aggressive, people breed them to be like that, I think its not the animal that is 'bad' like some people believe, its the people who are supposed to be caring for them, who breed them to fight, and they teach the animal to be nasty.

This is an interesting topic, I hope someone else will post their opinions too smile

Pit bulls have been stereotyped as bad due to media propaganda. I have met dozens of VERY friendly, social, and sweet pit bulls. The whole assumption that they're all bad is a stereotype that came from biased stories covering a VERY SMALL number of bites or attacks caused by bully-type breeds that were victimized as being "killers." The truth is that, the ones that DO behave badly had an abusive or neglectful background (including being chained in a backyard for their entire lives).
There are no rules that say media has to cover stories about dogs fairly, so they make them out to be horrendous creatures based on incidents of a few dogs each year, out of MILLIONS!
CHECK these statistics out:

Between 29,000 to 40,000 people die from homicide involving guns each year in the U.S. (that doesn't even include accidents or suicides)
120,000 of all U.S. deaths are "accidentally-caused" by doctors.
Around 20 deaths each year are caused by dog attacks.

So that means you are over 4000x more likely to die from your doctor than a dog attack, and over 1,000x more likely to be shot dead by a fellow human-being with gun than to die from a dog attack.

Over 50 percent of all dog bites occur on the dog owner's property.
The vast majority of biting dogs (77%) belong to the victim's family or a friend. Here are more statistics (some need to be updated): http://www.dogexpert.com/Dog Bite Statistics/Dogbitestatisticshome.html

I don't know, I don't think it takes death's to be afraid of a pit bull.

See, this is a really funny story. We find this really sweet white pit bull, however she was probably in heat because the other dog we found with her kept trying to mate. Not in standing heat of course, because she basically told him to back off.

While looking around for the owner, we see apartments and figure we'd ask people there if it was their dog. Well, my friend goes to where the stairs are, I see her mouth drop with a horrified face, and all of a sudden she starts running and screaming, then I see this absolutely MASSIVE pit bull come running after her and past me, I picked up that heavy male so he wasn't killed. Thankfully after my friend ran around the corner the male turned around and trotted back upstairs. He paid absolutely no attention to me.

I honestly don't know if that pit came after her because she was running and screaming, an injured animal behavior, or if it was because he was just guarding his owner who was probably a drug dealer. {I mean, why else would you keep a dangerous pit bull on your door step 24/7?}

But, again, that would be raising. The white one was sweet and like a regular dog, that big huge scary black and white one was not. Totally not... X_x

There was also another pit bull in the area who was red and white, and she was a huge sweetheart.

And I just don't know about that media thing. I don't know about where you live, but here they don't bash pit bulls in particular. Just seeing the images they show is enough to really make one afraid of pit bulls. And the recent story about a girl being bit was very interesting, they said she was helping the neighbors take in the grocery's and the two pit bulls just attacked her out of no where. They were both put down and both the neighbor and mother agree'd that those dogs were dangerous.

They sounded hyper which I don't think is really typical for a pit bull. Being hyper would probably mean high prey drive, and I do believe that would all be genetics.

[Edit]

Also, back to the story, the white pit bull was also running with my friend, ears back and tail tucked. And, since she could have been in not standing heat, that pit could have wanted to breed. But, you know those males and breeding, once they smell those hormones its all they think about, so I really doubt that black pit would have turned around.

I agree with Wickefisto. I am an absolute fan of American Pitbull terriers. They are naturally good with kids and it's all about the way the animal is raised and treated. I have met many APBT's and they have been sweet kind and loyal. My Uncle owns two APBT's and they are absolute dolls. They get along with everything and everyone. People are just scared of them.

I mean no dog should be left alone or trusted with young kids no matter what the breed. I myself plan to get or adopt one once I am out of college and have the time for dogs. I being the crazy dog loving girl have even attempted to befriend one that ran loose i my old neighborhood. He slowly began to trust me but then we moved and I never got to finish gaining his trust. Plus I have found one loose on the street his name was nacho btw. We brought him in and he took all the crap from my dog abby who's a lab mix. She didn't want him any where near the kitchen go figure. So she would growl bark and he just looked at her and walked away. We found his owner and she had a 6 year old son and a 2 year old son. The boys where crying when they found out their dog was gone but you should have seen the reaction when they where reunited. I still see nacho every now and then.

And Pit bull is a steryotype there is no such thing as a "pit bull" thats just what people call those mean looking bull dog types. There is such a thing as a American pit bull terrier and a staffordshire bull terrier. There are tons of "dangerous" breeds out there but the only ones that ever make the news are the stories about pitt like breeds.

-unrelated I guess mini rant-
but what really gets me about people is that they see a big dog example my boxer Bo and run away scared when he's the sweetest dog on earth. Then they see a small dog like a yorkie and rush up all hi and get bit.

OBJUCETION! i have seen dogfights on T.V. they make them bloodthirysty so they fight better. but in a book called dog heroes, there are kind pitbulls used as therapy dogs for old people in nursing homes and stuff. there are just some that have to be put down, crying , just because someone wants money. **** you dogfighters.

ive never seen a pit that was human aggressive, if anything they are one of the better dogs to be around humans. with pits however you do need to worry about dog aggresion so you should sociolize them from a young age.

and any dog is dangerous to be around a child. ive seen my toy poodle do plenty of damage to my hand because my family wont do anything about her training.

pit bull bashing is basicly a sport in my area gonk you always hear on the radio about how dangerous they are, and usually the people saying they are a mean dog have never even met a pit, or have and didnt realize it was a pit they were petting

I think if you raise them from birth to be more gentle you can train them to stay that way. Then eventually the breed will lose their reputation as "bad dogs."
