It was a late spring day, with dark clouds lingering on the horizon. The sun was starting to set, and the rich reds, oranges, and golds spread their warmth across the sea and sand. Tresca had been running. She loved to run. The feeling of the wind in her mane exhilarated her and the adrenaline pumping through her body gave her an ecstatic throbbing in her muscles, pushing her faster and faster. She loved the feel of the sand under her hoovers, and the salty spray of the water as it came rushing in. She'd laugh everytime the tiny droplets of water would tickle her nose. Running by the sea was her favorite thing to do.

She also loved to swim. She wouldn't go too far out, because she knew the current would whisk her away if she were to be caught out too far.

The clouds on the horizon threatened with a storm as they drew near the shore. As the sun was setting, the darkness settled in, muting the rich colors to a deeper shade. The occasional flash of lightning provided a brief instant of light.

"Wonderful!!" she said out loud to herself, "A night of racing is at hand." She loved to run along the water's edge when natures' fury and beauty were at its' best. The lightning provided a thrill and challenge at the same time. The cold salty rain pelting against her face did little to hinder her. The only thing she was afraid of was the tall waves that sometimes came with the storms. Those were the only dangers she saw, because of the potential of being washed out to sea.

The storm grew closer and in its coming were bright flashes from the streaks of light that zigzagged across the sky, going from the clouds to the water. Tresca marveled at the beauty of the dangerous white hot light. She stood still for only a second, catching her breath and taking off again. Her hair, no longer whipping behind her in the wind, now clung to her body from the rain.

The sun was no longer visible. The only light came from the brief flashes of lightning. It was enough for her to know where she was going, along with her other senses, she would stay away from the dark raging water's clutches.

User Image As night fell, Auburn Storm rose. It was unlike him to sleep during the later part of a sun circle; he was a partially nocturnal Kirin who enjoyed the best of both realms. This day was different from all of the rest, though Storm could not descern how so. Until this point the weather had been a monotonous norm; lulling tides, a very calm breeze, and humid heat drug him to the depths of slumber. Now thunderheads closed in, and lightning already struck the tallest palm trees in the near distance. My kind of weather he thought to himself merrily, welcoming the cooling winds the storm brought forth. Jumping to his feet he stretched out his limbs and shook the sand from his fur and scales.

Storm decided to head toward the shallows before really enjoying the brisk winds and approaching rain to check on a certain starfish that often clung to his body while he was exploring or swimming. He'd grown quite attached to the little fellow, and knew that there was no way it could withstand such harsh conditions. Searching several tide pools, he finally found the little thing and scooped it up in his mouth. Suddenly the downpour began, and the once gentle lapping waves became walls of roaring surf. The sea almost came to life, twisting and rocking about like a writing serpent; Storm headed toward the one place where he knew the starfish would remain safe, a small cove near rough points at the other side of the beach. He took care not to clamp down too tightly on his little friend as his stride broke into a full gallop. The descending darkness and roar of the sea were too intoxicating for simple canter; his veins surged with as much energy as the torrent all around him.

Suddenly Storm spotted a form in the dark distance; it appeared to be moving toward him at a high rate of speed, and as lightning struck in the east the beach was lit up enough so that he saw it's figure more clearly. The object was another Kirin, though it was hard to tell much more in such black, even with the aid of lightning. He veered into the angry water so as not to run into the other Kirin, noting that he or she seemed to be avoiding the waves. It must not be built for such currents as I am he thought pitifully. Even so, he or she must be a Kirin of the surf to move with such speed and enthusiasm through the heart of a storm.

Tresca kept up her pace, her eyes closed to slits to prevent water from stinging her eyes. Her racing heart pounded in her ears, and she kept her breathing to a steady quick rhythm. The shell around her neck bounced up and down, and swayed with each pounding stride she made.

The night had enveloped her, and it became harder for her to see in front of her. In the brief seconds that she had vision, she saw ahead of her a dark silhouette against the crashing waves. It appeared to be another creature; another kirin.

"Of all nights to meet someone," she thought. She slowed her pace when she neared the other kirin, and came to a stop not far from it. She took a moment to catch her breath, and exhaled slowly.

"Nice weather for a run eh?" she asked him, noting that the other kirin was indeed a male, and that he was standing just inside the low surf that was crashing against the sand.

Auburn observed the other Kirin slowing as it drew near, and with every step he was able to see more of its form. This Kirin was indeed a mare, one with tiger like stripes and a trinket hanging about her neck. She lacked a horn, but had very impressive head armor which was covered with bony spines and tentacles. She stopped then to catch her breath, and he noted that she kept her hooves firmly from the clutches of the pounding waves; he on the other hand was nearly knee deep in the angry water.

She spoke to him then, and he was quite taken by her voice; it was a soft melody, like the rolling tides on a calm day. However, her voice also held the hidden strength of those same tides, which pound stones into fine sand as time wears on. He was so mesmerized he almost didn't hear her question. After a few moments of silence, save the noise of the storm and thrashing sea, Auburn snapped back into reality and managed to offer a decent reply.

"It certainly is a wonderful evening for adventure, dear miss," he said and offered a graceful greeting bow. "Might I request your name?"

He was anxious suddenly that such an entrance might be taken in an arrogant manner, for he had not presented his own name to her, and he almost brushed off any humorous suggestion in her inquiry. Then he realized that his voice may not have been audible in the torrent of the weather at all. Will I have a chance at a second impression, or have I blown it already, he questioned his mind in embarrassment. Perhaps she would take his words in the honest way he meant them if the latter was true?

Tresca chuckled when the male bowed towards her. "I am of no importance, yet he bows towards me? Why?" After giving it a bit of thought, she answered his question. "Tresca. My name is Tresca, and you are?"

She took a moment to look him over, catching glimpses of him when the lightning would allow. She noticed his spots, although she wasn't entirely sure what shade of blue or green they were. And she also noticed his legs. Where she had longer tufts of fur, he had what appeared to be fin-like protrusions. She wondered if those helped him in the water when he swam.

All in all, she found him quite handsome, and caught herself staring hard, hoping he didn't notice. She met his eyes for a second, and quickly looked away, hoping the darkness had concealed her rudeness.
