NEWEST UPDATE I just discovered today that I have WAY more than 30 fry. i have over 50 good looking fry. They eat and swim all over the place.Bad pic but its hard to get a good one of something so small. I give you...the newer betta fry! These swim vertically. The larger free swimming (horizontal) fry hide a lot and have clear bodies. WOOT! Got another spawn and daddy might be doing his job! I have about 6-7 SUPER AWESOME looking fry. A bunch of other smaller fry. The fry's parents are spawning again right now so there should be more fry on the way! :3 Lost LOTS of fry. Might only end up with 5 or so. SO MAD! Counted 26 fry. Lost a total of about 5 fry over the span of a few days. just watched the baby betta pick up food from the bottom of the tank. i watched a few of the fry pick on some of the food i added, the dust at the bottom of a container of freeze dried blood worms. Happy Skittles Lizzy NOTE: Sponge filters are a MUST in every fry tank as far as im concerned. not only does it provide mild circulation and biological/slight mechanical filtration, it is a food stop for the babies because of the microscopic things that grow on it. The ParentsDADMOM she is in the cup. the male in the bg was a veil tail i had tried to breed her with initially. previous failed spawn embrace. Together in the tankDaddy under the nest-ashame he never did his daddy duty of caring for the eggs. in the end that was MY job. i put the eggs in a separate 3 gallon tank on top of a styrofoam plate that had part of it weighed down so there was always enough warm water over them. Had to eventually chuck a bunch of the eggs. I am convinced the father's job is only to keep the eggs clean and free of fungus. Morei am thinking the fry became free swimming july 3rd or july 4th. i came back home on the 4th for a bbq and saw them darting around. Shame we couldnt care for any of the fry (no extra salt setups) but i was so happy for him! he's an awesome reefer! yes...that is MY own image of one of the fish.

hey guys been getting spawns from my betta. (got around 3) sadly these are the daddy's first spawns and so they arent taking care of the eggs.
i do have over 100 fertilized eggs though in a separate tank. i took them away before he decided to eat them. lets hope these little guys hatch!
i think i am going to give some eggs back to their daddy to experiment. he DID build a brand new nest. and if he eats them oh well...i still have LOTS more. their best chance is to have a daddy so i hope it goes well.earlier pic of the eggs in the nest before i had to take them.
thats also just about half of what i got in the end. they werent finished spawning at that point

Luckily most people have room for bettas because you don't need a terribly huge and expensive set up for one. You should have no problems finding homes if you get babies. And if you ever breed halfmoons I would love to buy a few from you. Can't find any decent ones anywhere. The ones on ebay have insane shipping prices.

When I move, I'm definitely going to set up a half moon breeding program and sell the babies with decent shipping prices. Just to get more of them out there for people. They're my favorite of the bettas and there's such a poor selection of them in pet stores. It doesn't do them justice at all. Most betta breeders that ship charge at least $30 if not more to ship even just a pair. That's mostly profit because it doesn't cost that much to ship. Even overnight is $10 less than that.
What do the veil tails look like?

I would love to see some affordable HM's on the market. I've only ever seen VT's for sale, and a few crowntails. Most breeds I know just from pictures on the net. Good luck with the eggs smile

guess what I HAVE FRY! a lot of the eggs had to be take out (fungus)
i am convinced the eggs do not need to be at the surface for air (hell the baby fish dont develop a labyrinth until much later) the father betta must keep them clean and free of fungus and bad eggs.
i am still not 100% excited. they are still extremely small and could still not make it. i think whatever makes it after a week should be ok. we'll see

Horror Inc. veil tails are your typical tailed bettas. the ones with the hanging droopy fin. imma stop buying so many (id have to REALLY love to buy) because they may be harder for me to sell/give to say a pet shop (one that i actually LIKE) if i ever get a HUGE batch of fry.
and guarateend overnight/live delivery does indeed cost $30 thats what we ALWAYS pay for ALL our live animals from even big pet suppliers like liveaquaria. that way if it dies they ssend you your money back OR a replacement OR credit. if you pay less for shipping you are most likely NOT getting a guarantee. if the thing dies on the way well...too bad.

I've had fish overnighted for $15 and up. I got my BN pleco overnight $15 for the shipping, the first one didn't make it so the person I bought it from sent me another one free of charge (mind you, this was winter). My crays were overnighted to me for $22. I don't usually overnight when I ship fish unless the buyers requests it. I ship priority in a well insulated flat rate box (until I get scale then I won't bother with a flat rate) and I've never had a loss yet.
I don't buy my fish from the big places like liveaquaria and such specifically because of the pricing and because you can't choose the sex. If my lfs doesn't have it/can't get it, I'll scour internet forums until I can find a breeder, and the prices are usually much better. This is true with just about any fish except bettas, I cannot find a quality breeder that doesn't have high prices. That's why when I move out I'm gonna shell out the dough for a few pairs, maybe $100 worth or so, set up a few breeding and fry tanks, and sell the babies for affordable prices. I just hope it doesn't ruffle any feathers of the other breeders out there.
That said, congrats on the fry! Do you have anything to feed them or are you gonna stick with the microorganisms that live in the tank? That must be so exciting, little baby bettas. I hope they do well!
I always confuse VTs with Plakats, thanks for clarifying that for me. Horror Inc.

well for saltwater fish and coral liveaquaria is the place to go. i dont think i'd ever order any kind of freshwater fish unless it was super exotic/rare/almost impossible to find and right now betta do not fit into that razz
i have been looking for decapsulated brine shrimp cysts and cant find any sad i wonder if i can feed them tigger pods (saltwater "bugs") i have all kinds of prepared fry food and im pretty sure there are little things they can eat swimming around

took out all the left over undeveloped eggs. dont want them ruining the water. also adding more water so the volume is greater. i MIGHT add some kind of water movement but im not sure. they are so tiny. maybe if i can find something extremely gentle.
