There was a field on the outskirts of Gaia, where fireworks were being set up for a fun little party, aimed at kids. There were some booths to play games at for prizes, and families had laid out blankets to sit on and have picnics at. Then there was the crew of the Rambler.

There were three gigantic coolers set up around their area, and a lazy boy on one of the blankets, where a tiny little dwarf girl and a baby gargoyle were wrestling at to see who got the chair. A grill was set up a few feet from them, where their white haired steam punk father was grilling burgers. It was probably one of the only copper colored and steam ran grills in this world or any other.

"My chair," Cobalt said, shoving at his big sister.

"Mine," she told him. "You're a baby, you don't deserve a chair of your own yet."

"You are as little as me," Cobalt muttered, shoving at her. It was more for something to do than because they wanted the chair. It was hot and muggy and Coba was starting to wake up.

The story telling would start soon.

The arguing children were soon approached by a third child. This one had long, lush (Especially with the bits of leaves), evergreen pine colored hair that was done up in a perky looking ponytail. She observed the squabble over the chair with a calm, moderate stare before seeming to decide it was okay to interrupt.

"Excuse me, but isn't the chair technically big enough for both of you to share?" Eden, the elf child, smiled, then pardoned herself. "Sorry to butt in, I just came over to say hi, so-- hi! My name is Eden!"

Bold little thing, and talkative too, wasn't she? She didn't seem to mind the fact that they might decide to ignore her and keep going, or they may not want to be interrupted at all. She just jumped right in hoping for the best and ready to shrug off the consequences and try again if need be. It was fascinating though, she had green hair, but the young one with wings had green SKIN! Wow!

They looked up at her and Jordan took the opportunity to sit in her little brother's lap. "There," she said. "I win."

"Is lil brother abuse," Coba complained, but didn't shove her off. She hardly weighed a thing to the gargoyle. "Eden?" he asked the green haired girl. He was learning how to speak correctly a lot faster than his sister had. It was probably because he was always insisting on hearing or telling stories.

"It's almost dusk," Jordan told them both. "You awake yet?" she asked her brother, twisting to look into his eyes.

"Not yet."

"He's always half asleep during the day. You can sit down if you want. Oh, and I'm Jordan, he's Cobalt."

Eiji had been particularly quiet today, without her normal declarations of... whatever the hell it was she liked to say. He was pretty sure it was Chinese and since he only spoke English and French, he stopped trying to figure out what she meant a very long time ago. Richter paused in his mental monologue and noticed that London, too, was looking pretty tired out - barely ten inches tall, she was hanging her arms out of his shirt pocket and looking distinctly wiped out.

It would be all right. They were just going to stay for stories and then head home, where Eiji and London could go to sleep and he could... well, not sleep. He set Eiji down and watched her toddle towards the group of - strange - children. Was one of them a dwarf? Wow, that'd be weird. "London," he said, "go sit with your sister. It's storytime, yeah?" The little will-of-the-wisp girl floated her way over to her sister, who had sat down fairly close to the chair with the two kids in it. London had the much better deal, since she could just sit on Eiji's lap and quietly glow. The two girls watched the exchange between the other pair of siblings with identical expressions of confusion and awe on their faces.

The reason they even knew it was about to be story time was because the other half of the Rambler crew was going around, telling people with kids that there was about to be one. Ker was especially good at it, being a tiny little dwarf who didn't seem threatening at all.

She caught sight of a boy to the right and smiled at him. "It's going to be a bit before the fireworks start, so if you want to hear a story, my son's about to tell one. He's over there in the lay-z-boy couch." Then she went to find someone else.

Coba loved having a big crowd to hear his tales.

Jordan was very well spoken for her age, or at least that's what her parents would have thought she was sure. She had a seat with a big grin, crossing her legs and resting in front of the chair since she wasn't sure there was room enough for all three of them-- given that she was bigger than the other two.

"Ohh... really? Is it because he's little still? Or do you guys just have different sleeping habits?"

She was curious and didn't mean to be rude. She paused to smile at the new arrivals, waving in a friendly manner, growing more excited when she heard a story was going to be shared.

"Hello! Are you friends of Jordan and Cobalt? I'm Eden!"

Oh, if Sophia and Eirwyn could just be there! But then Eirwyn would probably think a story wasn't much fun, but she hoped they'd come for the fireworks, and that the three could watch them together.

"He's a gargoyle," Jordan said patiently. It seemed pretty obvious to her, but she had grown up with all sorts of strange things. "Which means he's usually a rock during the day. Except we've got special cream that makes it so he can stay like this--"

And something cracked on the baby gargoyle. Thin flakes of shining rock the same color as his skin fell into the chair around them, and Jordan got off of him to brush the flakes away. "He's awake," she declared.

The boy seemed to gleam now, his body like a living jewel, his eyes bright and golden. And he grinned, a devilish little grin that he would grow into someday.

He stood, stretching and twisting, before letting out a loud yawn. "Now I'm awake," he declared. Then he looked at his little audience. "So what should the story be about?"

Cheche heard someone make mention of a story and turned her head from where she had been focused on stomping her already dirty topless Barbie through even more dirt. The person speaking was very small yet still somehow seemed to convey the authority of a grownup. Cheche turned further. The storyteller was just a little boy! She pushed herself to her feet, slipping away from her guardians.

"Animals!" she screeched, coming forward to stand beside where Eden was sitting. Her fists bounced against her thighs in excitement. Where Cobalt seemed to be getting easier to see as night began to fall, Cheche's dark skin and lack of any clothing except a pair of pink shorts made her a smudge in the grass. She sat with a thwump, looking up at the child on the chair. Story!

Eden's eyes gleamed up at the pair. A real gargoyle? Gargoyles were real? Wow! And even more amazing, Cobalt even turned to stone during the day and came "alive" at night, just like the ones in the show she'd watched with Tessa once!

"Oooh! Wow, I've never met a gargoyle before!" Honestly, though she was reminded of one she had always thought they were simply myth, and she'd never met a myth before! ..... Well, not ANOTHER Myth. She'd guessed he was a bat creature, or perhaps a friendly demon. Now that she knew the truth though-- "Now I'm even more glad I came over to say hi!" She grinned, pleased. They were joined by another then, and Eden settled now to lean forward with her arms draping over her knees as Cobalt prepared the story. She glanced at the other child next to her in the pink shorts, and the other two new arrivals, wondering if anyone else would speak up and-- as one of the "bigger kids" felt she should let them decide. She wasn't sure what to suggest anyway.

"No," said London, convinced this big green person was going to eat her. "Am London, is Eiji," she explained, scooting backwards. The dragon girl's concentration was on Cobalt and the waiting for a story, but she still wrapped her arms around her little sister.

Then colorful shards fell from the boy and Eiji cooed at them, lilac eyes crinkling up at the corners. They looked like her dragon pearl! she'd had to leave it at home. London, meanwhile, was convinced that the sky was falling and so when Cobalt asked for the story's subject, she just squeaked, "Music," and sidled closer to her sister.

Rayne had spotted the group as well, recognizing Jordie and Cobalt right off, even if she didn't know the others. But that was okay. She parted from her sister and mom, after pointing them out, then went to the group of others.

She stopped at the edge of the blanket, looking around at them all before taking a seat. "Hello," she said to everyone, being of few words. Then she waved to Coba and Jordie.

"Hiya, Rayne," Jordi said. "He's about to go into his storyteller mode." It was fascinating how the baby gargoyle could seem so adult when he was telling tales. She didn't even glance up as their father handed them both plates of hot dogs, she just inhaled hers and grabbed Coba's for when he got hungry.

"Animals and music," the toddler said, sitting down in a crouch on the edge of the chair. "You don't go into the woods at night," he started out slowly, quietly. "Strange things happen there. But sometimes, late at night, you can hear a soft, sweet music coming from the trees."

His voice was a child's, but it deepened as he started to tell his story, something in his nature giving him perfect pitch. Not that he ever sang on key, of course.

Cheche gathered her knees up close to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. This was going to be good, she could tell. Her father had only shared a disappointingly few stories about his homeworld even when pressed, and Orange Man's favorite tale started and ended with get out of the way or I'll get you out of it so help me, so this was definitely a treat. The little chupacabra took her eyes off of Cobalt briefly to find the pair of adults where she had left them, Doc nibbling on a sandwich, his thoughts far away, and Flux staring moodily at the bright jar of orange gas that was supposedly his son.

Her fingers tapped against her kneecaps as she turned her attention back to the storytelling gargoyle. Music in the forest. Check.

Rayne's ears picked up at Coba started his story. He scared her last time they met, making her poof into a little fox, but the kitsune girl loved hearing him tell a story. He had a good story voice. She didn't remember reading anything that started out like this, either.

New things were always good. Her two tails were tucked around her and she curled up with her arms around her knees as well to listen to him continue.

"It was midnight," Coba went on. "The moon was full, and poured light down on me and Mortar. The stars shone, too, but there was a chill to the air. I was telling Mortar the story of the wolf and the hunter when the sound reached my ear. I sat up, wanting to hear more of the music, but it stopped."

With each sentence he moved his body, depicting his words with actions. They were a bit overdone, but let's face it, he was still a toddler. He would fine tune his storytelling soon enough.
