Basically, you pour oil in a jar and use a wick to draw the oil up and then light the wick and voila, lamp!

Ok maybe you guys can help me...

I followed the directions for this lamp (except I added lavender oil to the olive oil and used a rock to help weight the wire donw) and got it all finished and pretty, but the wick burns too fast to actually make a lamp. I lit it and it burned for just a couple of minutes before burning down the 1/4 inch of wick. So I let it soak for a few hours to absorb the oil (I used a simple cotton wick that hadn't been pre-waxed) and lit it again, and it burned faster.

Can you tell if I did something wrong?

Otherwise, is there something I can do to make the wick burn slower?

Reading the directions again; I think I needed to salt the wick... would salting still work even though it's absorbed oil now?

you'd need to make a new wick. salt keeps the material from burning too fast and prevents charring.

your oil lamp looks so pretty!

i found some more instructions searching instructables.

gonk I salted a new wick and re-made the lamp; let it soak in the oil for a few hours, then lit it and it burned out just as quickly stressed So I let it sit overnight, and it still burns out quickly... crying
