How to Start a Personality Cult using Christianity.
I. You
A. First thing first, you are the greatest thing since sliced bread. God chose you and hell you might even be God.
B. Because you are so great, your interpretations of the Bible trump anything. This includes history, objective reality, various church traditions, and even Jesus himself. Remember now, God chose you for a reason.
C. Do not let anyone tell you that you are wrong. God called to you and you answered. You have God's full support in whatever you do, say, or teach.

II. Your Church
A. Since you started this Church and you are called by God, this is the one true Church. Any Church or person that stands against you is standing against God.
B. Your Church must have some goal that supports you as being God's chosen. The Old Testament and the Book of Revelations of St. John are full of obscure quotes that help support your stance to the "non-believers".
C. All Churches need money and money comes from other people. You can't expect to be doing God's work while working a vanilla job.
D. Only through your church can someone be a "true" Christian.
E. Some kind of ritual will be necessary to build such commitment. They need be simple and repetitive so they can get rid of unclean thoughts and promote a trance state so they can believe (if they actually doubt you) that you are bringing the true message of God. They are now true Christians.

III. People
A. Since money comes from people, you need people. Get as many people as you can in any way possible.
B. You should have at least a few disciples by now to at least keep you afloat. For the doubters, they need convince why you are right. Find some feature that every person has and declare it eBiL.
C. Biological feature are the easiest to attack. The common ones include sex but can be extended to other things such as urination, bowel movements, need for food or certain types of food (meat is good one), or even need for sleep. Again I can't stress this enough find some obscure quote to show why this is evil. "Non-believers" need proof of course.
D. Promise that those evil parts of one's self can be overcome by following your every word. Be sure that if your claim is something that you can't outwardly follow that there is a special way of doing it that makes it acceptable to God. Example: Special Jesus toilet covers that can be purchased for $19.99 from your church if you went the urination as evil route.
E. Your congregation must be prepared to follow what God has revealed to you even if it is illegal and/or immoral by biblical standards. Everyone should be keeping an eye on everyone and be willing to report any behavior God has told you to be immoral and be willing do jump when you say jump, otherwise they are not "true" Christians.

IV. The Bible
A. Silly "non-believers" are going to question you. This is why knowing obscure and re-contexualized quotes is important. You cannot be proven wrong because you are God, I mean God's chosen servant.
B. Or even better share your "revelations" about new commandments that God gave you, and by God I mean you.
C. Anyone that does not agree with your teachings of the Bible is a threat to you and an agent of Satan. Satan must be gotten rid of anyway necessary because God demands that the "light not mix with the dark"(2 Cor. 6:14, razz gave you a freebie there).
D. God's love is very, very important. That's why you are here so you can show it to your sheep, I mean followers. Without you to tell them what is good and evil, they can never know of God's love for them.

V. The End of you life
A. Now if you were stupid, I mean misheard what God told you, you need to have a fail safe to ensure your teachings remain true even after you pass away so God's next true disciple can properly continue on.
B. Now if you promised the end of the world by such and such date there are two ways to go about fixing this.
1. God took mercy on us and pushed the date back to a later date
2. Find away to convince everyone to commit suicide. Poisoned punch works great here.
C. If you claimed to be immortal or God even (of course you are wink don't doubt it), disappear without a trace. With all the cash you receive from devoted, God-fearing people, this should not be a problem. Or "punch" is always a great solution to bring your followers with you, knowingly or unknowingly. Never doubt the power of Kool-aid.

Not really. Churches aren't based on the person that runs them. There's multiple people needed to actually have a functioning church.
However if someone claims that they have "talked to God" or are a "Prophet of God" then that's when the flags go up.

And the problem with talking with God or Gods and doing what is outlined with what is known of the nature and preferences of the God or Gods in question while being a functioning member of society is?

Can you provide some examples because this seems to fall out of the context that I have presented?
