It was a bright beautiful day and Lily was finally free from her afternoon art class at Numaed. Why did schools have to offer summer classes, anyway? Didn't they know that kids just wanted to enjoy summer, even when it was art that was being taught? (Though on the bright side, Lily did have a rather nice mosaic made out of various beans of a lovely desert scene.)
Anyway. Beautiful day. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the wind carried on it a warm, summer breeze. Lily, being twelve now, thank you very much, had free reign over going places after class, as long as she let her mother know ahead of time and actually stayed there and was in a safe place. Today? She was going to the park.
As soon as she was in sight of it, the girl grinned, kicked off her sandals, and with an almighty, joyous yell, threw her backpack down and made a mad dash across the sandpit to the swings.

"Come on, Sarei, go play!" Marie said, her tone encouraging as she knelt next to her daughter, who sat in the sandbox and stared at her.
Sarei shook her head slowly; sunlight made her groggy and grumpy. A small noise came from her throat; she wanted to go back home, inside, where the mean sunlight couldn't get. "Nnnn." she whimpered, pudgy ebony hands rubbing at her eyes. Couldn't they come back later, when the night sky ate the sun? Argh, stupid Mommy.

Halfway across to the swings, sand squishy gloriously between her bare toes, Lily stopped at the seemingly sad sound that came from the infant. Someone was not a happy baby.
Knowing she probably should keep her nose in her own business, but ignoring that thought anyway, Lily called out to Marie, "Is she gonna be okay?"

"Oh, I'm sure she'll be just find. She's just probably a little scared, since this is a new place." Maria replied, waving her hand. See, no biggie?
"Nnngnnn!" Uh-oh, someone was getting frustrated. Why wasn't Mommy taking the hint. Green eyes glared at the adult, anger smoldering deep within like green flames. "Ahn." She said, as if it meant something. Who knew a baby could sound that threatening?

Okay. Sarei seriously did not sound like a happy baby. A shiver went up Lily's spine and she wondered why most babies these days couldn't be happy and floaty like Noah or at least quiet like Nadia? (Excluding the sick almost every other day part, of course.)
"Oh," the girl replied with understanding. She leaned down a little to peer at Sarei, that kept a bit of distance and glanced at Marie to make sure it was okay. "You'll like it. The sand is really fun to make castles out of and when you get better, think of it -- you could have the run of the whole playground; slide, swings, jungle gym..." Her voice got a little misty sounding there, thoughts off in the land of the playground.

Marie nodded; she didn't mind. In fact, Sarei seemed to be in need of socialization.
Ugh, these stupid big people didn't get it! "Un." she said, jabbing a pointed finger in the direction of the hated celestial body. Who cared about sand castles and playgrounds when him, the great enemy, beat down on them all with unforgiving rays? "In." she said, managing a coherent word. Yes, "in" is where she wanted to be.

'Un?' Lily didn't make the connection at first as to why the infant was pointing at the sun and just smiled, thinking Sarei had figured out what that large, fiery object in the sky was. And then she got it.
"Oh... Oh! You don't like the sun?"

There. Finally someone got what she was trying to say! Sarei gave a nod, offering the older child a faint barely-there smile. "Ad." She said, her tone solemn. Yes, the sun was bad. Very, very bad. She couldn't see how people managed to walk around under it as if it were nothing.

Lily wasn't sure what she said, but it seemed pretty easy to figure out -- the sun was bad. It was hard for the girl to wrap her head around, two of her siblings having to rely on sunlight for food and energy (they had learned that the hard way in her family). "Well, then," she said, blinking.

Sarei moved a bit so she was sitting in the girl's shadow. Well, if she was gonna stand there, might as well put the shade provided to good use, no? She chewed thoughtfully (or as thoughtfully as an infant can look) on her hand. "In?" she asked, looking up at the older girl. Since Mother kept ignoring the request, maybe this girl would listen.

Lily looked quizzically to Maria, unsure of what to do. Going inside did not fall under the child's jurisdiction (and she had a feeling that if she showed up at home with a baby, even if it was someone else's, her mother would have an aneurysm). "Um. I don't think I can take you inside."

Maria sighed, shaking her head. The little one seriously needed to get over her hatred of sunlight. It was annoying.
Sarei frowned, letting out a sigh. Well, it'd been worth a shot. She muttered in baby talk, crossing her arms. Who knew babyish babbling could sound so sinister? She wasn't mad at the tall girl; no, it wasn't her fault.

Oookay. The tiny one was starting to creep her out. Lily bit her lip and looked at Maria, then back to the infant. "I'm sorry?"
