It had initially come as a shock to Firyal when her roommate of six years told her that she was leaving Ista to be with her longterm, serious lover, a Bluerider from another Weyr. Firyal put on a sorrowful front and promised to use Numenor to keep in contact with Adrisa, but once the initial shock wore off she couldn't help being overjoyed. In the last year Adrisa had been a miserable roommate, bringing her lover back to the room at least once a sevenday, for instance. The Bluerider had disliked Firyal since she Impressed Numenor three years ago, and had made that abundantly clear whenever the opportunity presented itself. Firyal was glad she would never see him again, and wouldn't really miss Adrisa either.

With the overcrowding at the Weyr, however, Firyal only enjoyed a brief stint of living sans roommate. Two days later the Candidatemaster told her brusquely to pack up her belongings and come with him. She had a new rooming assignment. He had not been forthcoming with more information on the subject and she hadn't asked. She'd been avoiding speaking to the man since he the incident on the beach two Hatchings ago. For the most part he'd seemed content to let her stay out of his path, but her reassigned living space indicated he hadn't truly forgotten her existence. Pity, that.

She packed up her clothes and the few assorted sundries she'd acquired in her seven years at the Weyr and followed the Candidatemaster down the hall. Numenor perched on her shoulder in his customary place while Chance flew behind her, still young enough to be wobbly in flight. He'd learned early on that Numenor would not tolerate any other firelizard in his favorite place and was too agreeable to argue the point. Firyal suspected the young brown was growing on the older bronze, but she kept her opinions to herself. Neither firelizard would understand her, and if they did, Numenor would surely deny it and Chance would only get his hopes up.

At the end of her awkwardly silent walk, Firyal was abandoned, evidently expected to make her own introductions and explanations to her new roommate. Or would it be roommates? With any luck, they'd been apprised of the situation in advance and she'd only have to drop her things onto a cot. There was no way to know, however, until she opened the door and found out.

"Chance," she said softly. The brown firelizard flapped toward her and landed gracelessly on the bundle containing her clothes and belongings. Her next word was a command issued to both firelizards: "Behave."

With that, she knocked twice and pushed the door open.

Astri had been lucky in that she had managed to keep the same room over the Turn or so that she had been here. During that time period, she had two different roommates. One had Impressed (or so she thought), and the other had eventually left, saying that dragonriders were held true to all the horror tales she had been told. Neither had been particularly enjoyable to be around, though Astri had at least tolerated them and put up a good front, reminding herself that one day her life could depend on one of those girls. Now that the most recent had left, however, she had been alone for a blissful 24 hours. The rooms didn't really seem to fit two people, but Astri knew she would soon have to share her quarters again. In an effort to get off on a good foot with her new roommate, she straightened everything out, and even managed to sweep up a bit.

With the room looking presentable, Astri took a deep breath and rolled her shoulders back and forth to loosen them. She felt unexpectedly nervous at the notion of living with someone different. It would have been nice to have a roommate she could actually be friendly with, instead of someone she said hello to in the morning, and who went to bed at some late hour when Astri had already been asleep for several. Also, it would be nice if her new roommate didn't have a tendency to get roaring drunk and talk happily about the various men she had slept with, like the one who had Impressed had. Oh well. Dragons had their choices, and Astri couldn't question them.

WIth one least sweeping glance over the room, Astri perched on the edge of her bed. She had long ago established that her bed would be the one furthest away from the door, and wasn't willing to budge on that fact. She had been at the Weyr long enough that the room held some sort of attachment for her, and she had attempted to make her little corner as home-y as possible, without making it seem permanent. It was a difficult balance to make, but Astri thought she did rather well. When she had her own weyr, she would put more of an effort into things. When. She had to keep in mind that that was indeed her future.

At the knock on the door, Astri stood up, and managed a smile. Her attention was diverted from the girl who entered to the fire lizards almost once away, and her smile became far wider and more genuine. Oh, she could learn to enjoy this!

Feeling guilty for not paying attention to who had entered, Astri extended her hand. "Welcome. I'm Astri. You're my new roommate, correct? Well... Obviously." She smiled again, trying to be polite and friendly. Everything was a delicate balance. "You have lovely lizards. Hopefully there's room for all four of us in here. I tried to give you exactly half the space." Indeed Astri had, though she was afraid that some of her possessions may have spilled over. Ah well. They could hammer it all out later.

Glancing around the room, Firyal was indescribably relieved to see Astrisabe. She'd never had much to do with the girl, but not because she had any particular aversion to her. Their paths simply hadn't crossed. Despite not being well-acquainted with Astrisabe, Firyal had heard that she was a fairly decent, sensible person. Of course, she'd thought the same of Adrisa when she first roomed with her, and though it had been basically the truth, Adrisa decided to hide it deep beneath her other, less stellar traits. Her relief probably showed on her face as she smiled at Astrisabe.

Numenor wrapped his tail more tightly around Firyal's throat and regarded his human's new roommate suspiciously. His eyes weren't changing to a hostile color, but his body was practically quivering with tension. His younger companion, Chance, was nothing like so unfriendly. He stalked to the edge of Firyal's bundle which was closest to Astrisabe and peered at her with interest. He cheeped a query to Firyal which she interpreted as something along the lines of, "May I go meet her please?" Firyal gave him a mental nod.

"I think I'm your roommate," she agreed. "Firyal. I'm Firyal. The grouch on my shoulder is Numenor and the brown sweetling is Chance." The brown sweetling in question launched himself from his perch and flew over to land in a heap next to Astri on the bed. He chirruped at her, wondering if she had food and would be his friend.

"I appreciate your attempt at fairness. I should warn you that I'm not naturally neat, but I try to keep my junk to a minimum, so I can do a decent impression of neatness. I can't really make any promises about Numenor and Chance leaving your things alone until they're used to the new space. I'll do what I can to keep them from losing anything for you but, again, no promises."

She nodded to the unoccupied bed. "Is that mine?" The bundle in her arms was getting heavy.

Finally recognizing Firyal, Astri smiled. Firyal wasn't known (as far as Astri knew) for any vicious gossip or something of that sort, so things should go swimmingly. And if they didn't... Well, the Hatching should soon change things, correct? Probably at least one of them would Impress. But as of right now, Astri had no problems with Firyal, and did not anticipate any. She quite hoped they both Impressed, for she could not wish not Impressing on most anyone.

Watching the fire lizards, Astri's smile of delight widened. She didn't care that all her things would be strewn about for the next few days, and that her side of the room would probably be a horrid mess. It was worth it for the flitters, who she anticipated enriching her life in one way or the other. She didn't extend a hand to the brown, fearing she would scare him away, but she did have a slightly stale meatroll she had been snacking on to extend his way.

"That's a relief, to tell you the truth. I'm not naturally this neat either." Giving a sigh of relief, Astri sat on the edge of her bed. The room would probably return to some form of chaos soon, and chaos suited Astri fine. She kept her stuff neat enough that she could find things, but she was certainly no militant figure, with everything always in its place, dust free and ready to go. In fact, there were quite a few things lying under her bed that would currently serve as a testament to her true nature. Well, Astri had just had too much stuff to put away neatly, and she had wanted the room to look nice.

Seeing Firyal stand there, looking increasingly uncomfortable with her load, Astri laughed once, though her smile was warm. She didn't mean it as mocking- there was just something in her face. "Yes, that bed is yours. Please, put your things down and spread it out however you like! If we get a third roommate, they're going to have to find space on the floor." Wrinkling her nose at that idea, Astri hoped that for Faranth's sake they would NOT be one of those unlucky rooms that had a third denizen shoved into whatever spare space could be wrangled up.

Without preamble, Astri launched into her questions. It was natural to feel curious about the person you were going to live with... right? "Where do you come from before this? Or have you been here the entire time?" Here being the Weyr, of course. Astri's mental file card system was ready to go.

Firyal adored her firelizards. She treated them more like people tended to treat small children than firelizards. One of the many reason she was so fond of the little creatures was that they were wonderful at winning people over for her. Not Numenor so much, because he didn't really tend to like humans who weren't Firyal, but even he could be charming, though most people didn't find him as endearing as Chance. Chance was a sweetling, and an excellent ambassador for her. She'd yet to meet anyone who didn't like the friendly brown. Firyal was relieved to see that her new roommate was not the exception to that.

Chance did not have the faint heart she seemed concerned about and was willing to be bold if there was a possibility of food or affection or attention of any sort. He jumped awkwardly from the bed to Astri's stretched his neck over her hand to nibble at the meatroll. Numenor scolded him for his lack of discernment, but Chance ignored him. In the few seconds he'd known Astri, he'd come to the conclusion she was completely trustworthy and since she was offering him food she was also a friend. Obviously.

"I'm more relieved to hear that than you can imagine," Firyal replied as she dropped her things unceremoniously on her bed. "I don't think I could keep up with this standard of cleanliness for more than a week."

The thought of a third roommate wasn't enough to shrivel Firyal, but she was happier to have only the one roommate for the time being. She'd just come from a rooming situation with two girls, and the room seemed so much more spacious with just two people in it. She hoped very hard that they wouldn't have any more girls brought in though. She smiled at Astri's description of the accommodations any extra inhabitants could expect to enjoy.

"I've been living at Ista for the last...seven years? Shards, that sounds like an age. My mother sent me here to be fostered with my cousin when I was thirteen." She briefly pondered mentioning the situation that led to her arrival at the Weyr, but quickly decided no one wanted to hear those sordid details of her life, and even if they did, she had been brought up not to air familial dirty laundry in the company of strangers. "What about you? I feel like I should know these things about you, but I've never paid too much attention to Weyr comings and goings."
