[[For Ze Meta-Plot]]

"Bang bang bang, on the door baby," Aster bopped her head slightly along with the beat of the tune; normally songs stuck in her head were a thing of EVIL and had to be obliterated, lest they destroy the known universe and summon hungry zombie hordes from hell. However, there was a small clause in her rule for things like the B52s, possibly something stemming from the fact she liked to randomly yell TIIIIIIN ROOF, RUSTED.

So for now, the world was safe.

Raife's note had arrived, and with it, Aster had a sense of urgency and worry she rarely knew. It wasn't that she was anti-social; god knows, the pirate in her day had been known as a rabble-rouser and carouser. Seeing new faces and going to functions with lots of free food were two big plusses in her book. One meant people she could connive into things or plot with. The other was free food and what more logic did you need for that? None. You didn't pass up a free meal. And potluck suppers had the word LUCK in them. Couldn't pass up more of that either.

No, the problem here was the food part. Eat food Aster could assuredly do. Cook it was another matter; being a pirate captain meant the folks in the galley took care of that. As a result, most of the time these days it was either up to Allister to cook, or ordering for something. Thus, Raife's potluck supper was going to be blessed with Aster's potluck ordered in pizza. With pineapples she put on top herself. She figured there had to be something of hers on the dish in order for it to count.

Cedric had been fidgeting around on the rim of his cup for the past 20 minutes while Aster readied the food to go, looking characteristically anxious, but gnawing on a bit of pineapple with some gusto, so it wasn't the sort of anxious that meant he was squirmy and worried about interacting with new people. It was more the squirmy he wanted to see people he knew anxious.

The pumpkin Drinkable sucked some of the yellow fruit's juice off his fingers, feeling proud of himself for being able to reach so far out of his cup now. He wondered if Morgan would be proud he'd gotten so far all on his own.

Course, Morgan had prolly gotten that far out a long time ago; he was much braver about that then Cedric was. Kareme prolly could too if she was in to that. Truthfully they were the real reason Cedric was so anxious. The boy didn't have a lot of friends. Not seeing the ones he DID have made him wonder if they'd just forgotten about him.

"TIIIIIIIN ROOF," shouted Aster, finishing off her task at hand and then turning around to point at Cedric for his cue.

"Rusted!" he piped up, in a much smaller shout than hers.

"Perfect <3. You ready kiddo?" she asks, closing the lid on the pizza box which now had a nice big star with "ASTER" over the logo of the pizza place. Surely no one would notice...

"Uh huh!" he replied, slidding off the rim back into his juice with a plink! then floating on his back like an otter, pineapple still in his hands. "Aster?"

"Yea hon?" she set his cup on top of the pizza box, then opened the door to the house and shut it behind her. Allister was home so there was no need to lock it.

"W-will Kareme be there?" he asked. Aster was Mom. She'd know if he didn't have to worry about seeing people he knew. She knew these things already.

"I think so honey. The note sounded like it went to all the folks with juice kids so Star'd gotten one," Aster replies, poking at his cheek daintily,"And the same goes for Aki and Morgan. So I betcha the lemonade kid's gonna show up too."

He smiled, contented for now, working on finishing his treat to pass the time until they got there with lots of loud sucking and smacking.

Walking there and noting the little pumpkin was satisfied, Aster trained her thoughts on other things. The lack of other people for one. The streets were dark; had been lately. Of course, it was bloody October, logic argued. It was going to get dark. That's what they called night. Yea, instinct replied, but it was off. There was no activity. No life. Everything seemed as withered as the trees in autumn; silent and barren. Hell, as far as Aster had known, the shop had been closed for ages. She'd never seen any new kids [not that she'd been much of a regular, to its defense]. She'd scarcely seen Morgan and Aki. Huh. Wonder how they were doing. How anyone was doing.

Then there was a note from Raife saying it was time to 'checkup' on Cedric. Checkup? He'd only been born for ages; did Drinkables have to reach a certain shelf-age before they needed to be looked over. Not that he'd changed terribly much; a little more active, a little less withdrawn. ... Coloring every damn thing he could get near if he could reach a writing utensil.

But it wasn't like she'd ever fed him food that wasn't real food or kept him up late or left him outside to evaporate. The worst he'd ever gotten was some bullying from Ti but that was easily curtailed by putting Cedric on a high shelf. There were some things the Mendel just didn't stoop to doing under certain circumstances. Making fun of Cedric wasn't worth hauling his foot long self up to get to him.

The sidewalk make hollow clip clip clip noises under her feet, and there wasn't any music being piped out into the streets from any of the shops. Everything felt dusty and old. Even Aster felt dusty and old. Then again here, she was a real relic, wasn't she?

Bah. Nonsense. She was in her prime. That was the early retirement talking. And her old paranoia was talking about being suspicious over a silly letter for a simple gathering. Smiling in self-satisfaction, Aster shoved her frettings to the back of her mind, as the Drinkables shop came into her view, and eventually, she was standing outside it like some silly sod with a jack o' lantern cup and a piping hot pizza.

"I got me a Chrysler it's as big as a whale..."

Okay. The B52s came along too.

So... what had happened, actually? What was the conspiracy, the sitch, the big deal, the man the behind the curtain? The pirate squinted her eyes as she thought about this, only half paying attention to Cedric. Who wasn't looking terribly different from normal. But he was kind of mournfully looking back in the direction of the Drinkables shop.

They hadn't been there. Neither of them. Lots of new faces, lots of friendly ones to be sure. But they hadn't. And the reality of that fact had Cedric feeling very heavy and, rather than try to climb up to reach away from his cup, just sink down in it and pretend he didn't exist for the next day or two.

He was tired too. Really... tired. Yea... just sort of sleepy. Sleepy was good though. Sleepy brought naps and naps were always nice. Yes.

If Aster had thought of any real, concrete suspicions about who the mysterious sprayer of the pink sparkles was [her current vote was the easter bunny], seeing Cedric's tiny hint of a yawn out of the corner of her eye banished the thinking to the 'for later' column. If something had been amuck, Cedric'd be acting odd, right? Right. Yes.

At least that's what she kept telling herself. In reality, there was a feeling in Aster's pirate bones that something didn't sit well. Call it a sixth sense -- like her old first mate who'd been really good at guessing hurricanes via a broken ankle he'd gotten once. Whether it was a real skill or imagined, it was still something Aster had always listened to and it hadn't ever been terribly wrong or tricked her very often.

This time a tiny part of her hoped it was.

METAPLOT PART II
Here we start our post-pinkopolyptic adventure! For the rest of our metaplot, you'll be on your own personalized RP adventure with a staff member guiding you, post for post until the inevitable conclusion! The faster you post, the faster you get to your goal! Responses must be at least a paragraph, and if you ever go more than a week without responding, you're out! (C'mon, guys. It doesn't take a week to write a paragraph.) These don't have to be as long as the original metaplot #1 and #2, as we're going for more an RP style than a journal style. This could take anywhere from three weeks (four if you're unfortunately with Raife) to three months, depending on how you play this out! LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED, BABY.

A strange breeze drifts through, riffling loose papers and kicking up dust around the house. Some of the said dust has a particular pink tint to it. It seems harmless enough, a little residual from the happening “party”.

The dust resettles and gives off a faint glow where ever it has been tracked. Eventually the eerie glow fades away, save for the small amount left on the outside of Cedric’s cup and whatever dissolved into the liquid itself. That dust, continues to glow and instead of fading, brightens to the intensity of a small candle illuminating the young Drinkable!. Upon closer inspection, the inside of his cup actually radiates a slightly wavering light, disturbed only as Cedric moves.

Another notable change that could easily be overlooked is the matching leaf that has sprouted out of the young boy’s pumpkin stump. He looks very similar to his cup now. Endearing? Or unsettling?

What could be going on....

Cedric hadn't noticed the pink stuff on the side of his cup glowing. He'd been too busy waiting to get home and think of sinking to the bottom of his cup to wallow to see it.

Then the little Drinkable noticed he was the one glowing like a glowbug.

"Asteeeeerr..... 8___8;;;"

Aster had to suppress a groan and a desire to ask 'oh god, why was I right' to herself when the flickering frail light had caught her eye. She'd wanted to be wrong. She'd wanted to be so so wrong. Not because of anything regarding being right or hating when things got mucked up inexplicably.

Well, all right. It was that, and coupled with the fact that over time, ill befalling Cedric was equated in her mind, thereabouts, with kicking a basketful of puppies. Sad puppies. Sad fluffy puppies.

And now he was... glowing. Like a little jack o' lantern. The grinning look on his face didn't suit him.

"Wha... how....ouhhhhhhshite."

Glowing merrily, the little flame starts to make the cup feel a little warm to the touch, as if it were a REAL flame. Burning in the pumpkin juice? Even the little Drinkable! can feel the warmth it issues when swimming too close to it.

Cedric squinted at the little fire in his cup, feeling both scared and a little harassed by it. Even if it did feel so nice and warm... he almost wanted to reach out and see how hot it was, the rest of his cup seemed almost cold compared to it.

"Careful kiddo..." Aster murmured, just watching it cautiously, as scared for the little fellow as he probably was.

The flame keeps at it, burning bright and warming the cup further. Soon the pumpkin juice will turn into a warm bath and maybe start to steam? It’s unknown how hot the juice is now, but it’s clear that it will keep getting hotter.
