Sigh.
That was all Kyllae had to offer at the moment. Sitting on a rock, knees pulled up so that her chin might rest, she watched several young dragons and their bonded frolick and play in the water. Kyllae had only recently learned of this place. The artificial waterfall and cataract on the north side of the bowl, a perfect place for young dragons too little to fly, to come and bathe. The water was crisp and clear and fresh, fed from underground sources, and was a nice way to spend the day. Kyllae only wished she had a dragon to spend it with.
Not just one, but two hatching in which she failed to impress. Shells, she'd passed out at the last one! Not fun. Not good. She was eighteen. She still had a bit of time before she was too old. But...she was sick of candidate chores. She was ready to do something! Move on from the mundane tasks imposed on her, in favor of...well, anything really. She was hardly a drudge. It took special skills to be a dolphineer, and Kyllae liked to think she brought new, valuable things to the table. So why were her days spent chopping vegetables and cleaning floors? It wasn't fair.
All her friends had impressed, it seemed, and she was being left behind. She wasn't normally so anxious or broody, but the newly laid clutch got her to thinking. She had to impress. She just had to. Her friends were going places, doing things, making names for themselves! She was cleaning the toilets. She watched Mischief rolling around in the water. The antics of her flit served to cheer her a little. Mischief wiggled and wormed around in the shallows, doggy-paddling where it got too deep to stand. Trouble was pressed tightly against the groove of Kyllae's neck, cooing sweet nothings and trying to pull her human out of this uncharacteristic sour mood. Kyllae smiled and rubbed Trouble's head affectionately. No, this was no time for a nasty mood. She would impress! She steeled herself on it. She sat up a little straighter, watching the dragons and their riders in the water intently; as if she could extract some hidden knowledge from them, and use it herself.
Sitting a good ten meters away, she was hardly inconspicuous, but she wasn't doing much to draw attention to herself. Not at the moment anyway. She was here to learn. And she wasn't the only one. There were a few other candidates here, who were either helping bathe their friends dragons, or just enjoying the water. It was a nice day out, if a little hot. The water was a welcome relief. Kyllae pondered enjoying it herself. She stretched out, uncoiling her legs and stretching them out, loving the feel sun's warmth on familiar tan skin. She stood, fixing her hair quickly with an expert hand before she picked her way closer to the water. She never knew who she might meet, and making a good first impression was important. She always tried to keep her appearance up for that reason. And the fact that she liked to look pretty. In a cute skirt, and loose fitting sleeveless white shirt, she liked to think she lookd relaxed, comfortable, but good nonetheless. She was very picky about what she wore, and how she wore it.
Standing at the water's edge, she slipped off a sandle, trying out the water with her toes. It was far from warm, but not quite freezing. It would be nice, in this heat. She glanced up at the sun. More people would be showing up soon to escape the heat, she knew. Candidates, weyrlings, and riders alike. That was good though. Hopefully more pretty dragons for her to admire.

Once upon a time, Hanya wouldn’t have wanted to frequent the cataract. But that was shortly after she arrived…just after the first Hatching. It barely counted; she had come expecting to win only to learn that dragons weren’t a competition. Well…they were, but only in the heads of the Candidates. She shook her head slightly with a wry smile. Not Impressing wasn’t a loss. It was just something that happened. And there was a new clutch on the sands, everyone was thrumming with excitement, and the adrenaline was returning. Hanya was in a good mood at the moment.
It probably helped that she had been doing work in the Lower Caverns instead of the herdbeast pens that morning. She didn’t stink for once; instead, she smelled rather pleasant, like the herbs used to keep the nastier crawly things away from cloth and lavender oil, a small amount of which she had stolen to dab behind her ears. And she wasn’t dressed in rough work clothing. Because of the nature of the work, she had been able to put on real clothes: a simple linen shift dyed cheerful pink and a thick woven belt of undyed cloth that she had made herself during her time at Weavercraft Hall. Currently, she was barefoot. Trousers and boots were just so impractical for Ista weather…she couldn’t understand the women who insisted on wearing them.
There were other Candidates there, though none that she was on excellent terms with, and she paused to check the scene for any unoccupied boys (there were none; all of them had dragons, and Hanya knew she couldn’t compete with that) before orienting on something splashing about in the water. Closer inspection proved it to be a flitt, and Hanya edged closer, looking at the girl she assumed to be its owner. …Kyllae, she thought. One of the girls whose name everyone knew, even if they didn’t know the person. Well-dressed, too…Hanya approved.
“Good afternoon! Is the swimming flitt yours? She’s darling!” she said as soon as she was close enough that she could talk without shouting her comments to all and sundry.

Kyllae turned, not sharply, as that might mess up her hair, but she did offer Hanya a look, running over in her mind what she thought of the girl, whether she knew her, and whether they'd met before. Hanya was dressed nicely, smelled, good, and had an eye for beautiful flits. Kyllae accepted her for the moment. Never one to be shy herself, she offered a smile, as mischievous as it was vivacious, and extended a hand for shaking. "Afternoon indeed," she greeted, nicely enough. She jerked her head towards the pale green flit in the water, who had stopped her water antics to watch the newcomer with a mixture of curiousity and wariness. "That's Mischief. And trust me, she's not darling," Kyllae added, leaving that bit up for interpretation. Mischief was pretty much the bane of anyone Kyllae disliked.
The little green had a deep love of soft and fluffy things, so with a little prompting from Kyllae, and a nudge in the right direction...enemies of Kyllae often found their pillows shredded and robbed of their fluff, padded jackets robbed of their padding, and anything of the like. Mischief certainly was useful. Mischief, finally realizing that she was the topic of conversation, fanned her wings a few times to dispell water, and jumped up, soggily flapping onto Kyllae's free shoulder, peering at Hanya curiously. Trouble seemed to care less. Buried in Kyllae's hair, Trouble's only concern was that Hanya be nice. Trouble was an overprotectice little booger, for sure.
Like Trouble, Kyllae was wary of the newcomer, but in a good way. Kyllae loved competition. Boys were all well and good, especially when they were cute, but...most of them weren't good for anything conversation wise, or anything truly engaging. For that sort of thing...Kyllae looked to girls. Girls were cunning, devious, strong. Girls provided an outlet for her need to succeed, to do something, to be somebody. She'd been at the Weyr for quite a while, and while she was still painfully a candidate...she did like to think she'd made a presence of herself. She worked her a** off in the ILA, to improve her lot in life. Her chance to be somebody.
In Hanya, Kyllae saw another competition. Hanya was fairly good looking, bold from what she could tell, and approximately the same age. Good. Kyllae welcomed rivalry. It was just a test of her ability. She wouldn't allow herself to be thrown off by Hanya's sudden appearance. Kyllae liked to think it grounded her.
She glanced up at the sky, and though her head stayed up to examine the cloudless blue, her eyes moved back to observe Hanya. "Beautiful day, isn't it?" she tested, nicely enough. She was forming opinions now. Not that Kyllae was a gossip, but she liked to know things about people. And more importantly, to have definitive opinions of them. When it came down to it, she liked to know who her friends were, who her enemies where, and what people she could use as stepping stones on the way to the top.

For once in her life, Hanya was less than inclined to size Kyllae up and see what exactly she'd have to do to beat the girl at her own game. She was in a genuinely good mood, and had no real desire to change it. She smiled at Kyllae and took her hand. Her grip was light but active, certainly not one of those atrocious dead fish handshakes, and she made solid eye contact as she shook. Kyllae was competition and Hanya had to prove herself. She certainly wasn't going to back down this early in the game.
"Hmm...she's still a beautiful little thing," she said with a slight shrug, regarding Mischief with a mock-solemn expression. She was aware of the other flitt on Kyllae's shoulder, but since it didn't seem particularly interested in her, she left it alone. She crouched only briefly, to get a better look at Mischief, before straightening up and looking at Kyllae once again. She wasn't really looking for anything in her, though she got the feeling that Kyllae, like her, spent the vast majority of her time assessing the competition.
Well, fine. If that was the way it had to be, that was the way it had to be.
"It's hot." She initially answered the question rather simply, but after a moment, she shrugged. "Cloudcover wouldn't be amiss right now, but at least the humidity's low and it hasn't rained yet today," she added. "Good day for swimming...and bathing dragons" Not that Hanya intended to swim at the moment, and she didn't have a dragon; she was at the cataract more because she liked the scenery than anything. If she was that peculiar artist boy (how had he been Searched, honestly?) she probably would have liked to sketch. Perhaps if she left the Weyr and took up her craft again, she'd embroider it into a tapestry.
The pattern of mist rising up from the waterfall would be lovely on the bottom of a skirt, though...she'd have to remember to pick up some new thread and fabric at the next Gather. But for now, she might as well enjoy the water. It was hot out, after all. With a few deft movements, she tucked her skirt up into her belt so it fell to mid-thigh instead of mid-calf and waded into the water.
"Have you had a chance to see the new clutch yet?" A challenge of her own. The news was still fresh, barely having begun its buzzing through the Weyr. If Kyllae had already gotten a look, she'd go up a step in Hanya's eyes.

Good, good. Hanya was up to par with Kyllae's standards. Eye contact, firm handshake, all good things in a person. She relaxed in her scrutiny a little. Hanya seemed clever, well enough aware of what Kyllae was doing. Clever people were difficult to manipulate or wield, so Kyllae shut that door for the most part. Only time would tell if she would prove a friend, enemy, or someone worthy enough to really be a rival. "I'd say she's beautiful too, but I'm biased on the matter." Kyllae scratched under Mischief's chin, the little green cooing in pleasure before Kyllae withdrew her finger.
Her smile flickered a little at the mention of swimming, only to grow a little wider. It was pretty damn hot, yes. But Kyllae was from Southern, where it got hotter. She could deal with Ista heat. It was the cold that really got to her. "Yes, quite a beautiful day for the water." Just because she couldn't be a dolphineer anymore didn't mean that she had to give up the water. When she wasn't doing chores, getting into trouble, or plotting, she was swimming. The water really was a nice way to while away the hours. And active swimming really did wonders for the body, Kyllae relied on it to keep herself in tip-top shape.
She wouldn't follow Hanya into the water. Not yet anyway. She sat down, folding her legs underneath her in a practiced manner. She wound and unwound a strand of hair around her finger, watching not just Hanya but the area in general. She didn't dare miss anything important, interesting company or not.
Seen the new clutch? Kyllae almost said something condescending. Almost refered to Hanya as 'girl', or something, since she didn't know her name. But Hanya was worthy enough of respect, so Kyllae awarded it accordingly. Kyllae took a moment to smooth her skirt, looking preoccupied, before looking back up to Hanya. "I'll one up seeing that and go so far as to say I touched them." Kyllae's smile was nothing short of devious.
Kyllae's life revolved around the ILA, and anticipating and preparing for the hatchings. She was always prepared with the latest news from either, always ready to spread the word, or withold it. She had high hopes for this hatching. The crack in the wall, peeking into the hatching grounds, was frequented by her. She hadn't actually gone with the intention to touch, but...when she had shown up, the queen had just left for a bit, and Kyllae could just barely squeeze through that crack. It was an opportunity too good to pass up. Mischief kept watch, and while it was true Kyllae was in there for less than three minutes, she made an effort to touch every egg, at least briefly. Talk about an adrenaline rush! "I can tell you there's a petite little queen egg too." She waggled a forefinger knowingly. Hanya might have already known that, but...Kyllae felt it helped to verify her statement too. "You should steal a peek with me sometime. It's always more fun with company."

Kyllae was doing well in Hanya's eyes. She was an interesting enough girl, just confrontational enough to catch Hanya's attention, and clearly pretty aware of what was going on. Hanya was enjoying the conversation reasonably well until Kyllae dropped a bomb that sent her entire opinion of the other girl reeling. The eggs were barely more than a rumour, so new that the Queen would never permit other than her own rider, possibly the father's rider onto the sands. There was no way a Candidate could have gone near the clutch.
"That's impossible," she said flatly, expression shifting from friendly enough to completely unimpressed. She didn't mind a casual game of one-upmanship, but when it turned into blatant lies...how stupid did Kyllae think she was? She wasn't a weyrbrat just allowed to Stand for the first time, nor was she one of the babies in the creche. She was seventeen, nearly a grown woman, and she didn't appreciate being lied to like she was stupid.
"At this point, you'd barely get close enough to the crack to see the eggs without the Queen throwing a hissy fit, let alone touch one," she said. She might only have been a Weyr resident for two turns, but that was more than enough to have figured that one out. "I'm not exactly four turns old; if you're going to lie to impress me, you've got to try to be at least a little bit more believable."
And the glove was dropped.

Kyllae's eyes narrowed, but rather than snap back, she just sat up a little straighter, repressing a sigh. Fighting was all well and good, bickering, she felt, was good for you in small doses. But it was too nice a day to argue. Kyllae wouldn't give any ground, she didn't have to defend herself. She'd caught a really lucky break. She supposed the queen had to go to the bathroom or something? She supposed were the situation reversed...she would have called out Hanya for lieing too. Urg, how frustrating! That's what she got for opening her big mouth.
She drummed her fingers on her leg for a moment, staring at the ground for a brief moment, composing herself. She didn't take well to being called a liar. She wanted a moment to make sure she didn't say anything in the heat of the moment. She held up a hand, watching Hanya with unblinking eyes. "Sounds too good to be true, right," she conceded a bit sheepishly. She was regretting that she had sounded like she was bragging before. "But I swear on the queen's egg, the gold left for just a minute or two. Bathroom or something, I suppose." She raised her other hand and made drew an 'X' over her chest. "Cross my heart." She wasn't pleading for understanding, that would be demeaning.
In an effort to try and be casual, she shrugged."In all honesty I'm extremely lucky I wasn't caught." And that was true enough. There wasn't much scarier than an angry queen, she was sure.
Mischief, bored of sitting. Hopped off of Kyllae's shoulder and glided to the edge of the water, watching Hanya curiously. The green jumped into the water with a little splash, waddling after Hanya. Kyllae was just sitting, and that was boring. What Hanya was doing was much more interesting, and Mischief wanted to try it. She paddled after the girl with a little squeak.
Trouble, picking up on the jump in Kyllae's agitation, withdrew from her human's hair, sitting on her Kyllae's shoulder and looking around concerned. Her eyes stayed a passive blue, for nothing seemed immediately to be the matter, but she was quite curious as to what was bothering her human.

Judging by Kyllae's narrowing of eyes, Hanya had, in fact, caught her in a lie. Keeping her bearing erect, chin tilted up just slightly farther than would be necessary to make eye contact with Kyllae, she waited to see what would happen next. She wasn't sure what she was waiting for, but when Kyllae seemed to compose herself, she realized it hadn't been that. She supposed she had probably wanted a fight; she was quick to decide when she had been slighted in some way, and this was more than a typical minor slight.
'Too good to be true' wasn't exactly what Hanya would have used to describe Kyllae's story. 'Sharding STUPID and fardling DANGEROUS' was more along the lines of how she was thinking. Kyllae couldn't have touched the eggs; it would have been outrageously STUPID. That was one of the first things Candidates were taught: eggs needed to harden, to not be touched until then at the risk of hurting the babies. She listened to Kyllae's oath, watching her impassively and fighting off a shake of her head. If the other girl was going to persist in a lie, she wasn't going to give her the time of day about it.
"That's Cheoth on the Sands," she said quietly. "She'd have killed you." Hypothetically speaking, anyways. Another reason Kyllae couldn't possibly have done it. Another Queen might have been more forgiving (doubtful), but Cheoth? Ha!
But then any remaining irritation she had was dispelled by Mischief's squeak, and she cooed as she realized the little green was paddling after her. Stopping and turning back to the flitt, she grinned and leaned down to better look at her. "You really are adorable, aren't you?" she crooned. She wanted one.

Kyllae liked to think she mixed things up; was unpredictable. This often got her into ridiculous loads of trouble, amongst other things. She decided then, that instead of sitting there, proud and tall and defending herself, she would do something different. Something totally unexpected. She stood up quickly, Trouble's claws digging into her shoulder for balance, as she kicked off her shoes and waded into the water after Hanya. If it looked like she was about to reach out and smack her, it's because she was close to it. How dare that girl question her integrity! Kyllae was alot of things, some good, some bad, but she liked to think herself honest.
Instead, she thrust out a hand, tilted at a forty-five degree angle, her palm facing up more than the back of her hand. It was an invitation to shake hands again, or could be taken as a gesture on its own. This was accompanied by a brilliant smile, though her eyes were serious. "Hanya, might we agree to disagree on this, and move on to another subject?" With her other hand, she made a broad, arching gesture, motioning to the Weyr around them. "It's far too beautiful a day to spend unhappily, or arguing. There's so much to be happy about, to look forward to, that it'd be a real waste of our time to spend like this."
Kyllae had come to this conclusion suddenly, but found quite a bit of stock in it. Really, it was nice out. Why be upset, why find fault in another person? She would do that later. Now...now she would enjoy herself. Enjoy the water. The atmosphere. And hopefully, Hanya.
Mischief's chest swelled from the attention, and if she weren't swimming, Mischief would be strutting. She liked being called adorable. Actually, she liked being called anything, pretty much. She wasn't picky. She peered up with bright blue eyes at Hanya; curious about the human. Now that she was no longer picking up on any great deal of irritation from her bonded, Mischief was much more inclined to be friendly. She offered Hanya a little chirp, trying to figure out how to climb up onto the girl without scratching her legs up while doing so.

Hanya wasn't above flinching when Kyllae moved toward her. Raising her hand to her face to deter the worst of the blow, she realized quickly that no harm was coming, and though she turned the movement into a quick check of her hair, her attempted nonchalance failed. So Hanya decided to pretend like it had never happened. That would be the least awkward of situations, certainly. Inclining her head, she took Kyllae's hand again, gave a brief, firm shake, and gave the other girl a slight smile.
"Sounds reasonable enough to me," she anwered. "It's too hot for this sort of thing, anyways." And then her attention went back to the flitt. Clearly, Mischief wanted something from her, and Hanya was more than willing to provide it, just as soon as she figured out what it was that Mischief wanted. She wasn't entirely certain if human-to-flitt communication occurred other than between those who had Impressed each other, and even if it did, she doubted the little green would bother to talk to her.
"Is she...trying to say something to me?" she asked doubtfully, glancing up to Kyllae. She wanted to scoop Mischief up and coddle her, but she got the impression that Kyllae might not be quite as pleased about that situation as she would. And there was always the feeling of the flitt to worry about as well.

Kyllae found in amusing that Hanya flinched, though she didn't so much as smile, or do anything to show that she found the other girl's actions pleasing. It wasn't even Hanya's reacting that pleased Kyllae, so much as knowing that she could get people to react. If they didn't know what to expect from her...it would keep them on their toes. Keep things interesting, exciting, fun! She wanted to be a wild card, unpredictable, she wanted people to whisper behind her back as they tried to figure out her intentions and ambitions.
She was immensely pleased that Hanya had the sense to agree to abandone the subject. It was never a good time to argue, but today was especially nice. With all the excitement in the air, and all the good going on...it would be a real shame to soil it.
Kyllae had been ignoring what Mischief wanted, in favor or making up with Hanya, but now that things seemed better, well...she would do both Mischief and Hanya a favor. She bent over, scooping up the swimming green with both hands, and holding her out to Hanya, so that the other girl could pick her up. "She wants some affection, that's all. Careful though, she's quite the little pickpocket." Kyllae wasn't the jealous type, not of her flits, anyway. She didn't care what they did, or who they were with. All that was important was that they came home at the end of the day, and that they loved her. As it happened though, Trouble never wanted to be away from her, and Mischief only liked other people's attention when Kyllae was there as well. Oh well, life was funny like that.
At that moment, as her thoughts wandered to the topic of flits...she had an idea! "Tell you what Hanya, I owe you one." After all, Hanya was gracious and smart enough to drop the touchy subject, something that was beneficial to both Kyllae and Hanya. "Next time my cousin's, or my flits clutch, I'll give you an egg!" It was a marvelous idea, in Kyllae's mind. She was a lot of things, but greedy and stingy were not among them. Shells, she'd already given one of her flit eggs away, why not hand out a few more? Next time she obtained some, anyway...There was no telling when that would be, but she knew she wasn't going anywhere, and it didn't seem like Hanya was either. Besides, they had hatchings and chores to make the time fly by. Kyllae was confident that soon enough she'd be in possession of another flitter egg.

"Good thing I don't have pockets at the moment, then," Hanya answered Kyllae's warning about the flitt with a wry smile, scooping up Mischief and grinning at first the flitt and then her owner. "I'm not sure I see what you mean about her not being darling, you know," she went on lazily. "I still think she's sweet." Shards, she would love one.
...and then...shards! Was Kyllae really offering that? Tilting her head up, Hanya grinned at the girl. "Really?" she asked. "Oh, um, you don't know me at all, and I've done nothing for you. It's all right, really. I'll get one eventually when the time is right. You don't need to do me a favour or anything." It wasn't pride speaking, just a sudden desire to not make herself look greedy or rude. Kyllae was being extremely gracious, and Hanya was rather impressed with the other young woman.
It was a really sweet thing to offer.
"Who's your cousin?" she asked, suddenly curious. She did remember another tall girl, one she had seen at the first Hatching she had ever Stood for...she blinked. "Does she ride a green? Pale, dark spots?" Nasty attitude. Hanya wasn't about to say that on the off-chance that Kyllae was related to that greenrider, but it was heavy on her mind. Though Haanyath had by no means made her fear dragons, the squat green was at least partly responsible for Hanya's nervousness at Hatchings.

Kyllae almost said that Mischief was so cute, after she'd shredded your pillow in search of stuffing, and gone through your wardrobe to make a veritable mess out of yours clothes, but she refrained. That bit was a secret, after all. Mischief made revenge so much more fun, and easy. All she had to do was point her in the right direction, towards Kyllae's enemies, and Mischief was more than happy to go through their things to find things she liked, occasionally destroying other personal belongings in the process.
Instead, she just shrugged. "She has her moments," she warned, but left it at that. But really, Hanya's sudden bout of words entertained Kyllae. The eternal predicament of how to try and accept a gift without seeming greedy sort of thing. Well, Kyllae was hardly stingy with her things. Mischief and Trouble were enough for her for now, maybe in the future she'd like another flit or two, but she was pretty sure T'ka was satisfied with just her two, so...whenever she happened to come into posession of more, Kyllae was confident it wouldn't be hard to give one to Hanya. After all, if she could make someone so obviously happy...why shouldn't she? Kyllae liked people to be happy.
"She does!" Kyllae perked up, excited that Hanya seemed to know her cousin as well. "And yes, she rides green Haanyath; who's the angriest dragon on Pern, I should think. I tried to pet her, and she made as if to bite me," Kyllae shared, voice whisper quiet, as if this was some great secret. "I suspect she's got some good in her somewhere, but it's awfully hard to find," she rolled her eyes at that one. Hopefully her dragon wouldn't be so foul tempered.

Well, Kyllae didn't respond much to Hanya's sudden bout of awkward stammering, so the girl wasn't entirely sure what she was thinking, so instead of dwelling on it (flitter eggs, shards!) she focused entirely on the conversation about T'ka and Haanyath. She didn't quite roll her eyes at Kyllae's words concerning Haanyath, but she did smile.
"From what I've seen, she's an...interesting one, certainly." Yes, Hanya was being polite. Extremely polite. She had said more interesting things about the angrier dragons to people before, but Kyllae was T'ka's cousin, and even if Kyllae was complaining about Haanyath, it was because she had the privilege of being related to Haanyath's rider. Similarly, Hanya felt wholly entitled to badmouth her own brothers, but if someone else were to have done it...
"It must be nice to have family with you in the Weyr," she said suddenly, almost without thinking. "I mean, I left mine at home, all of them." She was the first in her family to be Searched, and would likely be the only one...and while she wouldn't admit it aloud, she was rather homesick. Having a family would be nice...no matter how annoying they were.
