Somnium ground his teeth together in frustration as he stomped over the barren land near the desert. Puffs of dust rose with his every footfall, the particles briefly illuminated by his flames.

Why was this so damn hard? All he wanted to do was learn about his Kalona heritage, something his father hadn't been able to adequately teach him. He'd not been able to find many Kalonas at all...and those that he did find weren't particularly enlightening.

The young stallion glanced at the starry sky, wondering if he ought to try flying again, to see if he could spot any Kalona from the air. Stretching his wings irritated the scar tissue still forming beneath one though, and he decided to forgo the flying once more.

He had to try again sometime, but that didn't have to be tonight.

There were Kalona about...if the stallion would calm his irritation and focus on his surroundings, he would know this. Only a speck in the distance, but still visible. Perhaps though, unfortunately for him, this was not one of the soft-hearted kalona. This was Anevay, a well known half-breed hater.

Anevay was picking her way through the barren lands with an agenda on her mind. She had just spoken with her son Tartarus briefly not more than 30 minutes ago and was headed to her home range where she was to meet her adopted son Hex to exchange news of kalona business. Her attention was diverted by the appearance of the stallion, whom she noticed mostly because of the flicking tongues of flame that rose and fell with his hooves. He seemed very kalona-like from a distance and that was enough to cause her to change course slightly and begin a long approach.

Somnium scanned the horizon and stopped in surprise as he saw a lone figure making its way towards him. A Kalona! He knew that wing shape well and saw the long tail that was more of a weapon than his could ever be.

And he was utterly unsure of what to do now. The Kalona, the mare, was coming right at him, and he didn't know what to do or say. How was he supposed to do this? Growing up around normals and flutters, he had no experience whatsoever in the matter.

"Um...hi," he called out as soon as she was close enough to hear, hoping that he didn't sound as nervous as he felt. Mares...intimidated him for some reason, though his mind shied away from his mother. This would be a lot easier, he thought, if it was a stallion coming at him.

Anevay's curiosity and sense of purpose dampened almost immediately at the wishy-washy tone of voice the stallion used for a greeting. Was he really that weak of voice for such an imposing physical appearance?

"Greetings..." she said, trying to hold back disdain for the moment.

Somnium felt an almost overwhelming urge to look away from the stranger and paw the dirt. She made him feel...made him feel like his grandmother did, when she disapproved his violence! The young stallion bared his teeth at the thought and memory of submitting to a normal, unwinged and peaceful Soquili. His flames flared up as well.

With an effort, he got his anger under control and raised his head to meet the mare's gaze. "I...wonder," he spoke slowly, trying to get this right and not lose any more respect in the mare's eyes, "if you could tell me what being a Kalona means to you?"

Anevay was not intimidated by the male's teeth flashing, flame flickering, or tension that ran over the stallion's entire being. In fact, her eyes narrowed slightly at the question, wondering why one so strikingly kalona in appearance was asking such a thing. It was as this thought struck her that the faint stench of non-kalona reached her nose as it wafted gently on the breeze from this stallion.

"You ask what being a Kalona means to me?" she repeated slowly, head cocking slightly as she started a slow trundle around him in a circle, as though examining him from top to bottom, searching for a flaw. She was pretty she knew what was wrong here, but she wanted to hear him admit it himself.

"Shouldn't you know? You are kalona, yes? Or are you a filthy halfblood?"

Just once, Somnium wished fervently, he'd like to meet a strange female that didn't slowly circle him. Each moment this encounter went on reminded him more and more of his foolish adventure to meet his cursed mother.

He gritted his teeth. It seemed that this mare thought him weak for his partial blood. Well, he agreed, but with the hope of becoming stronger through knowledge. He had to try and convince her.

"It is no fault of mine that I wasn't born to two fullblooded Kalona," he hissed, sounding more like his brother at that moment. "If there is fault, it cannot be mine, who never asked to be born to that family."

Anevay's lips pursed and her brow went from narrowed to a slight lift, her head drifting slightly off center and tilted as she adopted a more contemplative stance. "You are almost convincing, halfblood," she drawled slowly. "Where does Kalona blood become tainted in your family, stallion? You seem angry enough to be as cursed as you are..." If it was through any kalona she knew, well...that would need to be addressed at a later time. She privately prayed it wasn't from a family she respected.

Somnium snorted, his lip curling in a sneer as he reflected on the answer to that question. "I never did get to meet the guy who convinced my grandmother - a pathetic, wingless Soquili if there ever was one - to bear his children," he spat. It was a shame because he'd often wondered about what sort of creature his grandfather must be, especially since Nagual-An was so reluctant to even mention him.

An odd light came into his eye as he continued. "But it's funny you should call me cursed, because my mother truly is. My father wished to preserve his Kalona bloodline, but needed the help of three or four other stallions to rescue my brother and me from that Skinwalker while we were still in baskets." His expression was shadowed as he remembered his own encounters with the fearsome black mare.

"And your mother is...father too, for that matter?

Anevay looked a little less peeved at the notion of the mixed blood before her. At least he seemed to border more on the kalona side on temperment and ideals, at least, thus far. The mention of skinwalkers did draw a slight flinch. Even SHE wasn't one who wanted to tangle willingly with those hellbeasts.

"No, my father isn't a Skinwalker at all," Somnium corrected the mare. His voice was wry as he remembered how Tlocatl often referred to Wyrsa as a "rabid dog" and how hard his father worked to have nothing to do with her.

In fact, it often seemed to him as if Tlocatl had actually felt something for the wingless Soquili in the days before she'd been cursed, but the young stallion had little proof of that. Regardless, it was more important to Somnium that his mother was a Skinwalker, and he alive to tell that tale than whatever might have been.

Anevay didn't quite understand what the stallion before her meant by cursed. To her, cursed just mean insane...crazy...a she-devil even.

"Why would your basket even be in reach of a Skinwalker? A poor excuse for a mother you must have had to have one so uncaring as to leave you for dead to those vile creatures." Anevay's lips flattened and she snorted in a rather unflattering manner, a tremor passing over her flanks.

Somnium snorted in turn.

"Because my mother is a Skinwalker and has been since before she had my basket," he told the mare dryly. It was odd, to his mind, that this older mare would know so little of Skinwalkers. Perhaps she was lucky enough to have never encountered one before. That was...almost a shame in some ways. Almost. Enough to make him jealous.

The reaction was almost instant; her eyes narrowed and her wings lifted slightly as though to act as a shield and she let her fangs become exposed again in warning.

"And you LIVED? No wonder you spoke with such acid on the matter. The Ravenblood in your veins MUST be stronger than I first gave you credit for." She was a bold kalona to be sure, but even she would think long and hard before engaging in anything with a Skinwalker.

The word "duh" echoed around in Somnium's brain, but the only indication of this inner thought was a slight twitch of his lips.

"Exactly," was the response he gave instead. "My father was disinclined to allow his unborn children become a Skinwalker's meal." Which, again, said nothing of how a Skinwalker became a mother in the first place...but there was no reason to point that out at this moment.
