In the depth of the forest, an unwary fawn drew its last breath.

As the last few struggling kicks ceased, a small kirin mare lowered her head, panting. Her quarry had nearly escaped, being far quicker to leap to its feet than she had anticipated. It had come down to a race of sorts, ending in a miscalculated leap before the terrified deer tumbled in a heap of thrashing legs. A sloppy kill, all in all. Dafina, however, didn't much care now that she'd succeeded. Results were results.

Enfys stumbled through the underbrush, for once not caring one whit about the ruckus he surely made. It was the least of his troubles. That shell-cracked kirkani inside hadn't died inside him yet, and he was yelling at Enfys. He paused to bang his head against a tree in the desperate, half-mad hope that it would shut up. It didn't help, and it just made Enfys' head hurt.

You do realize that all of this is your fault. If you hadn't tried to shut me out and had just listened to your true instincts as the son of the Sanguine Tiger, you would be sane, proud, and the most powerful stallion to walk upon Aerithe since your father. Instead you shut me away and you're going to go mad, it said with a rather dark, vindictive glee. I'm going to take over now, I'm going to eat you, and then we're going to feast on anyone foolish enough to deny you and your blood. Life will only get better if you stop trying to chase me out, you know.

"Shut up," he muttered. "I won't go back to what the Sanguine Tiger did. I'll keep following the Cloudy Rainbow's line. I'll be Mother's son."

The kirkani sneered. You just want to believe you'd be happier like that, with kirin who would betray you again if you didn't devour them. Your father should have devoured those kirin around the Lake of Tears the moment he arrived, but no, the Cloudy Rainbow begged him to not rush things. Where is your family after the likes of the Cloudy Rainbow begged the Sanguine Tiger to show mercy to kirin who don't eat others? Death! Your family's rightful dinner murdered your family without remorse, so it's only right you take revenge. The voice stopped, and Enfys moaned at the smell of freshly spilled blood.

"Oh, Goddess, no," he muttered. "Not blood." The corrosive, sweet scent filled the air around his sensitive Pryrin nose, driving him to seek it and to kill, regardless.

Oh, YES, it cackled madly. You shall have a feast!

"SHUT UP!!!" he cried desperately as he flung himself against his will into the clearing where the fawn lay dead and a young Pryrin lioness was standing over her prey. Oh, shells. He could just hear the kirkani cackling about another dinner guest to devour, with the fawn being an appetizer.

Dafina had frozen at the first crackle of underbrush, rounded ears swiveling to pinpoint where it was. Predator or lesser, an intruder could prove dangerous at this moment...a fellow predator might seek to steal her kill, while a lesser might chase her away from it, leaving the corpse to rot. Her teeth bared in defiance at the thought.

The beast that stumbled forth from the forest was something she could not truly have expected, however. There was a half-mad glint in his eye, and his bellow seemed to be at someone other than herself. Regardless of this, her ears flattened and she raised her head, tail lashing back and forth.

"If you seek prey, you will not find it here. This kill is mine." Her voice was cold, an impassable fortress of ice. The spark that burned within her eyes was fierce and hot, however.

Enfys somehow managed to look composed, though it was perhaps the Kirkani who looked cold and proud and communicated that to how Enfys unconsciously carried himself at that moment. "I will not take what is yours, miss," he replied, noting that this mare could not be much older than his five children back at home.

Of course you won't take her food. No son of the Sanguine Tiger would ever steal, no matter his sanity or starvation, and he would never, ever stoop to being a scavenger, the Kirkani sneered in his mind. Enfys had no time to shut him up, he needed to get away from other kirin before the Kirkani made him snap.

"Is this place yours as well?" he asked formally. It would be improper to hunt in another Pryrin's territory. He remembered that bit of etiquette from his father, even without the Kirkani's shell-cracked cacklings about proper Kirkani and Pryrin etiquette.

"...Good." Scanning the area, Dafina realized that her chase had taken her beyond the borders of the small territory that she claimed as her own. Nostrils flaring uneasily at this, her posture became even more stiff and unyielding. There was something faintly wrong about this encounter, even if she couldn't decipher what it was. "Not as such, no. That is nearby."

Enfys nodded, relieved for some reason. "Good."

Before he could stop it, the shell-cracked kirkani was speaking, and Enfys had been kicked into the back of his own mind by the vicious creature. "Then anyone who might object is too far away to hear you," he growled hungrily and eagerly as the maddened kirkani launched himself at the small mare with absolutely no warning. He laughed maniacally as he pounced, hooves and horn prepared to rend the flesh of his prey before it got a chance to run.

Flinging herself away from her attacker, Dafina narrowly avoided being gored by the larger kirin. As it was, his horn scored a long slash along her shoulder, and she shrieked in pain. Kicking wildly in an attempt to buy herself some space, she scrambled to get away from Enfys. She was smaller and more agile, but he was larger and stronger despite what she hoped was a lack of experience.

Whirling around, she let loose another shriek before lunging back at him, hoping to score a hit before darting back to a distance. She would not go down without a fight!

Unfortunately for the smaller mare, Enfys had done a bit of fighting with his father before he died, and the reflexes came out in the frenzied fight, stiffened a little from lack of practice. Blood dripped from his horn as he landed on his forefeet, turning the pounce into a maddened, circular buck, launching hooves and horn in every direction like a whirling dervish. He grinned insanely as the blood landed on his muzzle and he reached up to lick the salty, corrosive substance when he paused for a moment, sides heaving a little.

"Now, now, young one, it's wrong to disrespect your elders," he said with a disturbing grin and blood pumped from the gash produced by the lunge he hadn't completely dodged. "If you're a good filly, and I'm sure you are, you'll let a tired elder get his share of feed when he's on the road. It's a mark of courtesy and respect."

With a contemptuous snort, Dafina glared at the older, taller stallion. "Respect is earned, and you won't earn it from me," she hissed, tail lashing back and forth. Her hooves kept shuffling here and there, never resting in one spot for too long. She wanted to be ready to move if he lunged for her again. "You've chosen the wrong prey. If you do not leave me, I will make you." Leaping into a run, she slashed at him with her horn as she ran past. It wouldn't cause much damage, but if she could cause enough such wounds...maybe she'd weaken him enough to have a chance.

This was clearly not a good day for Dafina. Her horn had lightly gashed Enfys, but the shell-cracked kirkani was too mad to stop when dinner was so close by and giving him such entertainment. "Didn't your parents ever teach you to respect your elders? Surely they taught you. Foals are always taught to respect their elders, and you're still quite young," he said as he charged after her, horn lowered to attempt to gore any part of her he could reach.

"As for my prey, anything that does not kill me or run away far or fast enough is my prey. If you cannot kill me and you cannot escape, you fail to qualify as the right prey. After all, the strongest survive, and if you cannot destroy me or prove fast and clever enough to live, you are not the strongest, and do not deserve to survive. So spoke my father and his herd, for my father was the Great Sanguine Tiger, Lord of the Fire Kirkani Band." Some part of Enfys in the back of his mind screamed, trying to deny his own existence as the one supposed to carry on the Sanguine Tiger's dreadful beliefs. These screams fell on the deaf ears of the psychopathic kirkani who attempted to make a meal out of the small lioness mare.

"I have survived far more than you can imagine," Dafina spat, her voice icy with disdain. Fury surged through her veins--how dare he imply she was weak! With a snarl, she lunged at the stallion, horn low. She felt his own horn snag along her hide as she moved, but coldly ignored it. She would make him bleed for his words, and wound him with some of her own. "Your sire is lord of dust!"
PostPosted: Sun Aug 23, 2009 5:26 pm

Enfys danced lightly sideways. "Oh? A child young enough to be my own daughter dares claim her elder has seen less? Allow me to enlighten you 'ere you die, as a proper elder should."

The comment about the Sanguine Tiger make the kirkani burn with pure, unadulterated rage and he lashed out with all his hooves, teeth, and his sharp horn. "The Sanguine Tiger, if those fools who knew of the Great Kirkani Band saw fit to tell tiny fillies like you, was the leader of a full herd of kirkani, little filly. If he was dust, you would not be on death's doorstep right now, for any stallion who was not as great as the Sanguine Tiger would have been the Tiger's dinner."

His crazed charge was made through a mist of crimson berserker rage, and the sane Enfys would have been horrified at the very existence of this shell-cracked kirkani monstrosity.

"Where is he now, then?!" Dafina bellowed, twisting away in a desperate attempt to escape the slashing horn and cutting hooves. Under other circumstances, perhaps she might have stood a chance of victory. But here, now? Her opponent's madness lent him a beastly strength, and Dafina realized that if she didn't get out of there now that she would be as dead as the fawn trampled underfoot in their struggle. Using all of the agility she could muster, she whirled away and bolted into the underbrush.

It was in that instant that the mare escaped into the underbrush, before the crazed kirkani could get in a word edgewise about how pathetic she was as a pryrin, that Enfys managed to break past the mad kirkani into sanity. His sides heaved, eyes wide in horror. He'd attacked a blameless young mare about the same age as his eldest children, for no real reason except the mad hunger and pride of the kirkani.

The last time he'd snapped, he hadn't gone this far. He took a few desperate gulps of air into his burning lungs now that the berserk rage of the insane kirkani had retreated. What was happening? He'd been right to leave Iris and the children. He could never expose them to this horror, but...but he missed his family. Enfys gazed numbly at the trampled fawn a moment before a stiff resolve settled about him. If Enfys wanted to go home, he'd have to control this kirkani, right? Well, then, Enfys would get control and he'd return to his wonderful family. He'd do this, even if it took the majority of his life, so he would not hurt other kirin like he had this young mare again.
