I know that the Emerald Seed gave out items that were non-equipable and meant to be sold back to the stores like the mythril coins.
The recent RIGged items have easily gotten equipable stuff with a low sell back value that are NOT commons.
My question is this - should I sell back the ones I don't want to the stores right now, or should I try hoarding them for half a year or two years to see if the price in the MP goes up?

I'm not sure what items you're asking about here.
Things like the Mythrill coins I wouldn't invest in because they pretty much have a fixed value. You can't really do anything with them except turn them into gold, so there's really not much of a chance that they'll become more desirable than their face value over time.
Equippable items, even if they're priced low now, might end up being more desirable in the future. It's hard to say. You could always keep some and sell some if you need the cash now.
The one thing about the lower priced items from the RIG is that Gaia can and will make them available again sometime. So keeping a lot long term is risky - you have not only the risk that they won't go up in price, but also the risk that Gaia will make more available, which ruins the scarcity aspect.
That doesn't mean they won't be more valuable, just that there's an added level of risk.
I tend to get the RIG items I want when the price is right, and maybe an extra or three if I run across another really good price. But I don't stockpile.
My theory is that a lot of these items have store prices on them so the MP price won't fall below a certain level - if it does, people will buy them up and sell them back to the stores, increasing the scarcity of what's left. It's primitive Gaia price support, and the best they can to do to guarantee that if you buy a RIG, you won't end up with something completely worthless. (Tiny Terror Doll, anyone?) Because completely worthless "prizes" don't inspire people to giv them moar moneez.

Things like the bolt deodorant. It has a store price so you can sell it back and not have a worthless item. However, more may come from future boxes, plus the Gee Boi Turbo may be released again. So ... should I just sell it back to the stores - I like liquid assets - or pick a time to try to sell it on the MP? I'm not much of one to try to sell regular commons, even.

Why not sell some back and keep some? Nothing says it has to be all of one or the other.
I try to keep my non-liquid assets as diverse as possible - yes, it means if one item skyrockets I don't win huge, but when things fall I don't lose huge, either.

The thing with fail items is that you never know what's going to be useful or desirable later. I mean, I can't believe people are paying 1700+ for that soot face explode, but they are. So you might end up with a treasure trove or a garbage dump. You never can tell.

True. You just can't tell.
The buttercreams have a sellback price, but who would be crazy enough to do that??

We weren't talking about the RIGs themselves, but the stuff that came out of them.
