the dumbest question i ever heard was when my mom got her hair braided and a white lady asked " how did you grow your hair so fast".
[ lol ]
[I guess that just shows how little we really know about each other.]

[The above quote is from one of the other topics. But, being me, I figured we could concentrate on this in particular in a little more detail.

--What do you wish you knew about other races?

--What do you wish you knew about your race?

--Why do some white folks go to such great lengths to try to get darker skin?

--Why do some black folks try so hard to get straighter hair?

--Discuss any other questions you've wanted to know the answers to.]

[Great questions. 3nodding The observation that white parents seem to treat their kids as "rentals" sometimes is often the butt of jokes for many a stand-up comic. xd

We've all seen them--parents in the groccery store or laundrymat who seem to have no control over their toddlers; their preteens seem to talk to them however they want. It's like they just "got" these kids this morning and don't know how to make them behave.

This of course isn't true for all white parents; I've seen some that look like they will slap the taste out of their kids' mouths as soon as they are out of the store. I really have no answer for this question...other than a lot of parents these days struggle with finding alternate forms of behavior correction that don't involve hitting their children; and while they look for those other methods, they get to stand by and look flustered while their kids run amuck. stressed ]

[I think that some black parents start out with good intentions as far as the obscure-naming-of-the children-thing goes. They want their child to have a unique name; afterall, "Beyonce" made it big, didn't she? And no one has a problem with her name, right?

[Of course naming your child after a product or car is stupid. rolleyes But I suppose they just want a "different," "unique," or "original" name so their child will stand out. Yet there are tons of extrodinary people with ordinary names. Beyonce supposedly lived up to the madeup meaning of her name. But why put that sort of pressure on a child? Even if the name doesn't have aspecial meaning, why not give your child the advantage of being able to define themselves instead of having to put up with being "labeled" because of the name their parents chose?? confused ]

Ha. That reminds me of these girls... Miss Courtney and Ebrio (Oh yes, pronounced Embyro). Also of a boy named Theodocious. My math teacher was telling us how a gitl was named Shithead, but it was pronounced Shu-tay-ed. And another named Lemonjello, pronounced Luh-mon-gel-oh.
Sometimes I wish I had an original name... but not all the extra baggage to go with it...

As for white parents and their kids... wow... I work at Marshalls (Retail store, like Kohls or TJ Maxx) and I see all the little bad but kids through there. Sometimes I just want to snatch those kids up myself and slap them upside the head... i should stop being so violent though razz

[Theodocious is an old name, actually. 3nodding I think it may be European. I'd have to research it, though to be sure. But, yes, all the names that sound like products annoy me.]

[That's also a huge issue. These parents who try so hard to give their kids "original" names are setting their little ones up for racial profiling and stereotyping; as soon as someone sees your name, they automatically begin to judge you, try to come up with a face for you. It's the same when someone hears your voice,or otherwise tries to get to know you without "seeing" you. That even happens online. I'm sure most of you have looked at avatars and usernames and made assumptions about the person behind them before you get to know that user, right?]
