Every summer, the American Association of Dermatology buys me a plane ticket to Minnesota. They do this for over 100 kids. And pay for our entire week at camp. We go to Camp Discovery.

We have skin disorders. Alopecia, Eczema, Scleroderma(like me!), EB, and a hell of a lot more. We look different. But for five days of the year, we don't hide behind wigs or long sleeves. We get to be us.

It's more than not being afraid of being stared at because you look different. It's being able to talk to someone who understands what've you gone through. We may not have the same condition but we know what it's like to be sick all the time, to be stared at, to be different.

Most people think it's wierd that I go to "skin camp" but it's really just a normal camp. We go swimming, horseback riding, and even have a dance the last night. My cabin mates and I talk about the hot counselors and cute boys and they'll yell at me for doing "naughty" things. PDA is punished by you being chased with a siren by one of the counselors while everyone laughs.

I go to a normal summer camp. The only difference is it's free...and we look different so we're cooler than you. talk2hand

I mentioned before there's a girl in my grade who also has a medical condition. She's really depressed about her condition so I suggested she find a camp like mine that tailors to her. She seemed really excited about it. ^.^

Personally, I wish that your fun wouldn't be limited to one week, but....

People are annoying. Perhaps if there was some way to give everyone one of these conditions...

EB is a skin disorder? Maybe Qix should nerf the lazar and not landshark (had to say it)

Depends on brave the person is. One girl with no hair has no problem going to school without her wig. I'm not as brave, but I can easily hide my condition by wearing pants.

Though it made me want to stand out in ways I could control. I dye my hair wierd colors, wear chain pants, start dancing at random moments. I remember doing all three at camp one year, everyone thought I was psycho. xd

I have Linear and Morphea Scleroderma. Morphea is a patch of skin that is hard, tight, and discolored. Linear progresses in a line, mine started at my right foot and extends up my right side, stopping at my shoulder. My entire right leg is discolored and the skin is tough and hard.

My disease also causes my immune system to attack my body in the affected areas. It has eaten away most fat and some of the muscle in my right leg. The longer you have it in an area the less fat/muscle there is. Since it recently spread to my torso and up, there's not much loss of fat/muscle.

Though on the upside, my leg is extremely tough. When it's hit it rarely hurts and it's difficult to cut. Plus it quite the weapon when kicking. wink
