First off, I'm a heavy fighter in the SCA. It's a medieval reenactment group that does traditional sword and shield fighting. Our swords are wood and we hit hard enough to do some serious damage. Armor is a must - before each fight armor is inspected and must pass certain criteria. Since I participate in this, I have my own suit of leather armor and have become very familiar with the various types. Here, I'm drawing a suit of simple armor that could be done in either metal or leather. It's not quite as heavy as full plate and not as light as some of the earlier period armor. About medium. If you want to get into some of the other types of armor - like chainmail, full plate, brigidine, etc, you'll have to do some independent research. But this could be a starting place.

We'll start with the lineart. There is a list of vitals that need to be protected with armor. Shin, knees, thigh (it friggin HURTS to get hit there), torso, shoulders, forearm, hands/wrist, neck (specifically collarbone), and head. Because of space constraints, I'll be leaving off the hands/wrist and neck. If you want to know, the hands a protected with gauntlet, either full or half-gauntlet. Half gauntlets cover the wrist and back of the hand. Full covers everything, usually with a mitten build or jointed fingers. Collarbone is protected with a gorget - a round piece that goes over your shoulders and around with a piece that sticks up like a collar around your neck. I hate my gorget.

Anyways. I've got some commentary on the screenshots themselves so I should have to do little blabbing here.

First off, coloring metal is hard. I highly highly suggest getting some reference pictures to look at if you're having trouble. This tutorial can only go so far as I struggle with metals as well.

To complete the edit I added a lance and some underclothes. As you can see, there's really no need for straps here.

Here's some other examples of armor I've done:
