Dare punched me. Blame her.

She told me to think of something that would be a necessary element of a village. I break things a lot and figure other people do too. So, Mele kind of took over my brain. Ceramicist, to replace and make all of these easy-to-break items.

PART I. PHYSICAL

Full name:: Mele Ilima (Also combined to make Melima, but only by her mother)
Reasons for the name(s):: Mother had a fascination with exotic flowers
Sex:: Female
Apparent Age/Approximate Age:: 21-24 / 148
If he/she was alive during the massacres, was he/she bonded? To whom? Not alive at that point
Rank:: Olplyn
If a Daewl, what is his/her one power?:: N/A
Skin Tone/Apparent Race:: Caucasian, with a perpetual tan / Mediterranean
Height:: 5'5 1/2
Weight/Body Build:: She can be described as lanky to willowy, depending on who you talk to. Mele sits somewhere between skinny and curvy, but due to her profession, this rarely varies.
Hair:: Dark brown, nearing black, with some streaks of navy and ice blue here and there that reaches her lower back, but above her waist. She often keeps it tied back or plaited when she's working, but her mother appreciates it more, when Mele comes around, if she leaves it mostly loose. Her hair is wavy, not curly.
Eyes:: Brown with some golden flecks throughout.
Ear colours/markings:: Dark brown colouring with blue designs that match her hair, much like her tattoo
Tail colours/markings:: Dark brown colouring with blue designs that match her hair, much like her tattoo
Peculiar Physical Traits:: N/A
Distinguishing Marks:: Her right calf has a complicated series of ivy-like tattoos that wind their way around her leg, just below her knee
Health:: Mele was a bit smaller than normal when she hatched and was watched closely after birth for any defects or illnesses, but she's been healthy as a horse since then.
Senses:: Her sense of touch is the sharpest, and first learned her profession with a blindfold, so she could better know and feel what a proper bowl or plate was supposed to be. Since she has mastered the art of simple ceramics and moved into more complicated forms and glass, her eyesight has picked up more, as well as her hearing (flicking her glass pieces to be sure they are solid and well made creates a certain vibrating tone)
Voice:: Although Mele is quiet, mostly because of her self-selected living situation, her voice has an exceptional lilt to it, as if she was raised in a foreign country. It may be because her Master was, in fact, Turkish, and traveled after he was released during the Massacres, but she doesn't notice.
Mannerisms:: Quick to make sound trading decision, this ability has spilled over into her life. She is able to make fairly accurate judgements about people after their first interaction, and this may be why she hasn't mated for any length of time during her life. Mele has a weird habit of speaking with her hands too, but that may be related to her profession.
Clothes/shoes/accessories:: Often seen in a light, well worn apron when working, she always has her long hair tied back and prefers pants (or more often shorts) and a thin tank top. Her minimal amount of clothing usually can be related to her close distance towards her kiln, while she is working, and she only wears thick, black boots when blowing glass or stocking and unstocking her kiln. When she isn't working, she is well dressed, in button-up shirts and, most often, a well tailored pair of pants and a pair of nice shoes with enough of a heel on them that her mother won't complain. All of her clothing is also made by her mother, and Mele wears the ridiculous dresses that her mother sends over as a not-so subtle hint every once in a while to keep the arguments to a minimum.
Eating habits/mannerisms/tastes:: Mele appreciates any well made meal, but her preferences range from spicy meats to spectacular salads.

PART II. GENERAL

Occupation/Social Status in Rank:: Ceramicist / Glassblower as needed (by special commission)
Views on Rank responsibilities:: While Mele doesn't have any specific responsibilities, if she were to be asked by the Council to help with anything, she wouldn't shirk her duties.
Education/ Intelligence:: Mele was educated by her father, and she excelled in an extreme way compared to her siblings, but finally decided to conclude her learning when she was accepted into an apprenticeship.
Marital Status:: Single, previously mated, no children
Where does he/she live?:: Mele lives in a small building just outside of the Village, with her shop on the bottom floor and her living quarters on the top. She has a small studio and kiln that she keeps a fair distance away from the house in the event that something were to happen.
Political Thoughts/ Views of Ranks and Vhaid:: Mele is a bit stereotypical that she sticks to her own, but does try to keep an open mind when she is selling her wares or meeting other Jivvins of other ranks for the first time. She has a bit of an attitude when it comes to Sargtlins, but her almost-hermitude keeps this to a minimum. Mele isn't particularly political in any manner, but when asked by the Council for aide, she'll step up just like anyone else would.
Beliefs/ Values/ Strength of Beliefs:: Mele is mostly concerned with her work and has a ridiculously high work ethic, but she highly values her family and, when another one turns up, her mate. She is loyal to the point of fault, and would do anything that they asked of her. Within certain boundaries.
What is his/her usual disposition?:: Mele is predominantly quiet and mostly interested in her work, but her temper can rise and flair as needed. She isn't one to be trifled with and should not be insulted in any manner, although she is particularly proud of her work and will not accept any negative attitudes when selling her pottery and wares. If she feels that a potential customer is being unreasonably rude or notably unappreciative, she has, and continues, to throw that person out of her shop and will refuse to sell them anything for a few months, at least. Mele isn't especially capable of holding a long grudge, but when pressed, she might.
Optimist/ Pessimist? :: Optimist, in certain occasions.
Confident/Self-conscious? :: Mele is confident in her work and her ability to produce good work and unconcerned with how other Jivvins view her. She has been known to leave her house and make appearances in the Village for certain supplies with her clay-strewn apron and still up to her elbows in flecks of clay.
How does he/she feel about his/her appearance? :: Mele isn't particularly concerned with her appearance, unless she has a specific reason to dress up and entertain others. Her attitude towards her shop is very laid back, but her appearance compared to other Jivvins is only tested in terms of her pride. [see above as well]
Most important possession:: Her kiln and blow pipes.
Talents :: Has a particular talent for her profession, but would have specialized in glassblowing before ceramics if the elementary supplies had been more readily available. She has a fondness for good quality products. Furthermore, it is said that Mele can throw together a fantastic meal in no time flat.
What is a normal day like for this Jivvin?:: Depending on the number of commisions (be it ceramic or glass), Mele will ready herself for the day, finish her daily chores, have a light breakfast, handle any business aspects (all sales must be made before noon), and then have a heavy lunch before she wanders back to her studio. Usually working with clay, Mele will first handle any and all commisions and then replace any items she might have sold that morning (plates, bowls, vases, etc) before she works on a novelty item or two (sculptures, etc). If she still has time during her day, she might blow a glass piece. After washing up, Mele will usually conclude her day with dinner and possibly her current book, or work on any extra paperwork she might need to fill out. If it's a weekend, she might be tempted to wander out into the Village and visit with the few people she deems close friends. Mele has dinner with her parents and siblings once a week.
What is a normal rainy day like for this Jivvin?:: No difference.
Greatest Fear:: Her kiln exploding and catching the surrounding forest on fire.
What does he/she want most?:: To see something other than an expanse of trees, and finally settle down.

Major Goals::
1. Figure out how to increase her glass production (a better sourse of primary materials)
2. Settle down and raise children
3. Eventually teach another Jivvin the art of her trade

PART III. RELATIONSHIPS

Significant Other/Relationship:: N/A at the moment; Hielk was an Olplyn with a pretty feminine role within the rank; whenever a couple needed a day or evening off without their children, Hielk would step in for the night and offer his services as a nanny (or manny). Although he had never specifically offered to help other ranks, he sometimes found himself being convinced to do so. His Olplyn traits were watered down, almost, and he acted more like an Afya some times, to be honest. Despite this, the relationship between the pair blossomed and Mele found herself interacting with other jivvins on a regular basis, while the pair was together. In the end, they ended somewhat amicably, on the basis that Mele was having cold feet with the idea of having any children and Hielk was adamant that he wanted to start having his own children in the near future.
Who does he/she live with?:: Herself
Who does he/she spend the most time with?:: Herself, but she also trades with Gunn on a weekly basis: she supplies her with clay and the best sand she can come by for her glass products
Father/Relationship with him/Rank/Current Status:: Like his daughter, Raemin is an Olplyn and a tradesman. While Mele had chosen to study in clay and glass, Raemin works with wood, and is an important element to any building that needs to be erected within the Village or elsewhere. It is said that he has an uncanny ability to select the strongest trees to be used in his work. Raemin loves Mele, his only daughter, and is exceptionally protective of her. He rather disliked her last mate, and made that clear on several occasions, and may be the reason why Mele never felt the need to reproduce with him [Hielk]. The two get along extremely well.
Mother/Relationship with her/Rank/Current Status:: Mele's mother, Saffira, is an Afya, and didn't mind the fact that she was mating outside of her rank. She simply found Raemin attractive and went with her gut feelings. Before she busied herself with raising her children, Saffira worked with a few of her female cousins as tailors (Saffira knows Luaya professionally and admires her work, although the pair haven't met outside passing greetings). She has returned to that profession now that all of her children have grown and left the house, but she still makes sure that everyone returns to her house once a week for dinner and conversation. Mele and Saffira get along well enough, but Saffira would rather if her daughter would mate again and, as the only female child, ensure more future grandchildren within the next decade or so. Mele anticipates this less than her mother.
Siblings/Ranks/Current Status:: The smallest of triplets (all from separate eggs, mind you) and the only female, Mele gets along famously with her two brothers, both of which are Afya like her mother. Each of her brothers went into the same profession, and acted more like twins than triplets , some times. Both boys, Hadley and Laurie, are nearly identical and are often indistinguishable from the other. Attached to the hip, even to this day, they both mated within months of each other and have their own growing broods. Mele likes visiting with her brothers, but is less excited about the number of children running around.
Best Friend/Rank/Current Status:: Supposing that Mele ever bothered to contemplate this area of her life, she would assume that this slot would probably be filled by Colby or Gunnwale. Since the Olplyn rather enjoys her solitude, these seem to be the two people that she interacts with on a regular basis that she doesn't feel the urge to strangle. Well. Colby might still illicit these feelings on a semi-regular basis with her sometimes ridiculous (and late) commissions.
Feelings toward animals:: Mele has no strong feelings towards animals unless they have been cooked and properly prepared for dinner. Then she rather enjoys eating them (She is, in no way, a vegetarian).
How does he/she view his/her family?:: Mele views her family as her stabilizing feature in her life and the reason she leaves her house, more often than not. She doesn't particularly dislike any aspect of it, but some weeks she anticipates the event less than others.
How does he/she view his/her friends?:: When Mele leaves the house for purposes asides work, it's usually to go and skulk around at Cole's... establishment. Which she neither approves or disapproves of the female's business, making an appearance every once in a while seems to bring in more commissions, either through Colby and her rather flirtatious behavior or otherwise. Otherwise, Mele has various acquaintances that she knows from the Market where she brings a few of her better pieces out to show and bring in business.
How does his/her family view him/her?:: [see above]
How does his/her friends view them?:: Mele's friends find her exceptionally witty, when she bothers to speak up. A few think that she needs to get out more, and have tried on previous occasions to set Mele up with various males in the Village, but Mele hasn't agreed yet.
Who is his/her hero?:: Mele's old teacher and master of ceramics and glass, Yorik, who died only two decades after he had determined that she had mastered the skill well enough.

I mentioned it before, but you need to tweak her health, as well as fill in rank responsibilities [of which olplyns officially have none, but perhaps her views on others? Like Sargtlins' mandatory patrolling.

Other'n that, I've torn it apart enough for now, so I'll let Moo'n Crew do the rest.

Welcome to the shop biggrin Even if Indu did have to threaten you to get you here.

I'm not finding any glaring issues, which is great--I actually really like this app, so kudos! I can tell you've put a lot of thought into it. I would like Kep to look over this as well when I can drag her over to do so, but I'll go through the things that clearly stood out to me now. They're all minor.

Firstly, you may want to reword her physical build/weight description....it has me all confused about her body type xD Mind, I'm not an artist, but I figure if it's got me that upside-down it might throw them off too.

I'd like you to fill in something for 'Best Friend' and "Feelings towards animals", even if it's just "Mele has no strong opinions, good or bad, about animals." Just to keep things consistent.

In the case of her brothers, you mentioned both married within a short time of each other--statistically speaking, even as alike as they are, for both to marry at all is really unlikely. I made a recent decision (ie, Tieg's application) that characters who are not specifically being applied for cannot be married, so I'm going to have to ask you to leave that out, unless you want to specifically apply for the boys and their respective wives.

Also on the note of the siblings, you use the term "triplets". I just want to clarify that the three came from three separate eggs of the same clutch. I figured it was a safe assumption; this is more of a terminology nitpick on my part. We have a couple of pairs of twins, but twins are typically considered two Jivvins who hatch from the same egg. I don't know that true triplets would survive a hatching.

Also, Yorik the Turk is dead, you've said, so I won't ask for more on him, but I would like to know more about her ex-mate, Hielk? The basics, sort of like with her family. Rank, general disposition, parting feelings. What happened to him? I feel like, if you're making a point of acknowledging him, the match would probably have been common knowledge at least among their inner crowd. I do like that you've mentioned him, however. The possibility of past mates is an often-overlooked one among applications. Well done :3

I think that's it for now... Address those for me and I'll have Kep double check, and we'll go from there~.

Mmkay. I think I covered everything.

Mate-check (omigawd, please don't hate on him. I might cry otherwise. He's hysterical). And this has been eeeeeeooooooooonnnnnns ago, so that was probably why I didn't fill this in. In her mind, it was a little blip in her foolish teenaged part of her life.

Build-fixed

BFF status- attained

Mated vs Married - Eff. I thought I caught all of those, but one slipped through. Damn. Fixed.

Triplets- Acknowledged, but I wasn't sure if there was another term that would properly explain that I meant they were born together.. but not.. so. I was confused.

If there are any other issues, I'm good with fixing them. [Hurrah, hurray. Calloo, callaaay.]

(( first of all you have Sarcastic Kitty in your sig, and that's awesome XD I helped my sister fix all those images and it's been a long time since I've seen one XD ))

Okay. ..

1) her hair colour? The brown is natural and the colour is dyed? As far as I know it's not impossible for jivvin hair to be coloured, but it is remarkably unusual.

2) Moo, She lives just outside the village... so far most of the apps have people living just outside the village XD ... I'm not bothered by this, but I think outside the village may need to be clarified by the shop maybe? since they can't actually live outside. ... right? Also, for this particular character, wouldn't it make more sense for her to put up shop in the village center where people are more likely to come?

3) do kilns often explode?

4) Other than that I got nothing.

I actually suggested that it be toward the outer part of the village [not outside, but not near the center] due to the kiln. Since... Larger ones billow not-so-nice smelling smoke about, and kilns don't OFTEN explode [if they're constructed properly], however, kilnwork DOES. Shatter/explode, etc, if there are airbubbles in the clay.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 28, 2009 11:31 am

I leave for a day and all this action happens. Woohoo.

About the hair: hrrm. I dunno. I doubt that she would actually bother to colour her hair on a regular basis, since that would, y'know, involve effort, but if that's the only way to do it, I guess? I'm a matcher, and I figured it would just work out. If this is odd, I can make it flat brown. I guess some part of me tried to convert the colours in her Llar form into her Quen one? Dunno.

House/Shop issue: Nomnom. Well. Since SOMEONE decided to just jump right in there, that's half of it. The other half is that Mele is kind of a hermit. Kind of. She likes her space and the whole kiln issue..thing. She wanted to be close to her studio-workshop-thing and she wanted to be available for her wares on a regular basis and she wanted to know where everything is and who wants what, etc. It made sense in my head to just have a two-fold building, where she lives on the second story in a flat sort of thing and then have her shop on the bottom and then her studio separate. She's not nosy so much as... slightly [moronic..ly] paranoid and a little OCD. Maybe. She has trust issues, hence her rank, and this is probably why she hasn't hired someone to help her out in her shop on any regular basis and have more hours asides morningish: 8a-12p.
[I'm guessing on the hours thing. After discussing the issue with Indu, I figured Gunnwale and Colby pretty much do what they want irrespective of the hours she holds in her shop. Maybe a couple other people once I get rolling. As well as her family. Possibly. She's got a big bark and a wicked, but not often used, bite] And then she comes out to the Market once a week and shows off her stuff there. So. I figured since she's the only ceramicist, she could be a little bitchy and make people come to her if they don't have time on whatever day the Market is to come by. And she has commissions to deliver and drop off, so. Through those three avenues [and Colby. Ahem.] she's got enough business to keep her going. Since she does novelty pieces as well.

Kilns: No, they do not explode very often, but there is a minute possibility, so Mele figured safe was better than really really friggen sorry. The only issue is that since she's out of the general Village area, the issue of the non-exploding kiln catching the forest on fire makes her more paranoid. Hurrah. And then the ceramics can explode, but I figure since she's like.. a master and whatever, it doesn't happen often anymore, but when it does, it's LOUD. Like, gunshot loud. Scaring people and/or irritating people and having to deal with their 'tudes is not on her to-do list.

Sorry for the wait, broken <3

The hair color's fine. Most Jivvins have natural colored hair, yes, but unnatural colors aren't unheard of, or terribly unusual. Males, for example, usually have hair the color of their manes, and lots of those are silver or blue or green or whatev. So it stands to reason girls could too. My own Caitrione has green hair, and Maeve has purple, just off the top of my head. "Natural" colors are certainly more common, but yeah, I'm not going to hold that against you.

We have had a lot on the outskirts, yeah, and I think it makes sense in this case. In a lot of cases, I've just been thinking of "outskirts" as "not the center of town", so not the market or the training grounds or any often-busy area xD It's not necessarily off on its own, but more a few blocks away from where people would normally be. Savvy?

Since both of those were more for clarification than changing, and I have nothing else to address, approved!
PostPosted: Sat Jul 11, 2009 6:35 am

HURRRRAAHHHHHHHHH.

And regarding the outskirts problem, we just wanted to be safe. Or obtuse.
