((This is a follow-up RP to the contest I won Vinesh from. Entry is the opening. Peacock family, feel free to hop in anytime. Whoever tags first after this, please make sure your Kirin is the one who spots Vinesh. o 3o )) Vinesh pranced daintily through the trees, paused in the middle of a sunlit clearing, and began to practice the new song he'd just composed in his head.
"K'roo k'roo k'roo k'roo!"
Everyone, even Elune, who was usually so polite, had some very unkind words for him last night when he was testing out said song. Tone deaf! Making their feathers stand on edge! Oh, they'd be singing a different tune when he got back from practice! Vin had actually bothered to get up early this morning so he could sing without anyone around to shoot him down for it. He'd show them! KA'ROO!
As he reached the wobbly zenith of his meandering, warbling song, a particularly loud and sustained rustling from a nearby bush caused the aspiring songster to pause abruptly. Could his older brother have followed him out, shaking with laughter at his attempts? Vinesh scowled and sashayed over, having lost the idea he had for the song's ending.
"What are you doing up so - OH!"
Instead of his brother's large white and blue face, a small tan one with yellow eyes peered back at him. Surprised and intrigued, the lion Kirin foal stepped out of her hiding place to greet an equally surprised and intrigued peacock Kirin foal. What immediately struck Vinesh was how very different they were - she was all fur, with a snake-like tail and a bulkier, heavyset body, and a muzzle that was stained red; he was all feathers, light and nimble.
All the young musician cared about was: he had his first audience who wasn't related to him! Excited, he launched into his song from the beginning, while his new "friend" pricked her ears at him for a moment, then slunk around to his back. Ohhh yeahhh, she was checkin' him out, he had his first fan...
Then there was a playful growl, and a sharp pain in his behind. Annoyed at the second interruption, Vinesh turned to confront The Audience. She sat on the spot looking disappointed, one baby tail feather in her mouth. Without a growl to warn him this time, The Audience lunged for the rest of the feathers. Shocked, Vinesh finally realised that her stained muzzle was not an unfortunate birthmark, but blood - and not only his tail feathers but his life were at risk.
Hunter and hunted fled through the forest, she powered by pure muscle, he with the lighter body and longer legs. With a frightening caterwaul, the lion Kirin leapt with neck out and fangs closing down, tearing away the rest of Vin's tail feathers with ease as he frantically pulled away from her, not wanting to be eaten.
I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die... and all because I came out to sing this stupid song!
The Audience had paused to inspect and play with her newly acquired ornaments, but Vinesh, completely unaware, surged onwards. He felt himself gradually tiring. Enough of going forward, he'd have to try a different direction.
Untried wings flapped a little, flapped harder, flapped very hard, and, with the help of the slight breeze, Vinesh was up in a tree. A few heart-racing, gasp-filled moments later, The Audience appeared below, scanning her surroundings for her prey. Vin squeezed his eyes shut and pressed himself against the tree trunk.
The wind helped me get up here... surely it's in the wrong direction for her to scent me!
When he dared peek again, The Audience was striding proudly back towards the cursed place where they'd first met, holding a fan of his baby feathers in her mouth. Vinesh waited until she was completely out of hearing range, then slumped against the tree and sobbed - with shame, rage, and oddly enough, joy. His singing probably hadn't improved, true, but today he'd achieved his first ascent... and that was something to celebrate over.
*** Vinesh paused just out of sight of his family, and tried to gather up the courage to face them. On one hand, there was his tale of flight. On the other... there was his naked pink butt to explain, and possibly endure laughter for. The prospect of embarrassment was almost too much to bear, and Vin began to shrink back into the cover of the trees.
"Vinesh! Where have you been?!"
Too late.

Of course, the minute Vinesh had disappeared from where she, Zephyr, and Mayur were living until Vinesh and Zephyr could fly, Aoibheann started searching for little Vinesh, admonishing Zephyr to stay with Mayur, for safety. Finally, she spotted the universally dusty brown shape that was Vinesh and she breathed a sigh of relief, mixed with slight irritation. Where had he been?
"Vinesh! Where have you been?!" she asked, hurrying over to nuzzle him. She spotted the missing tail feathers right off the bat. "Vinesh, what happened to your tail feathers?" she asked. Worry returned to her beautiful dark eyes. She'd initially assumed he'd been off playing here, but since he was missing tail feathers and Aoibheann didn't see said feathers in the vicinity.... Something had happened to Vinesh and that scared her. Clifton, Elune, and Rementh had never gotten into this kind of mischief as foals, well, certainly not alone, and there was certainly safety in numbers. Zephyr was initially less perturbed than his mother at the sight of Vinesh. "Vinesh! Where'd you go? Mama was worried about you," he said, skittering up to his dusty brother. One glance at Vinesh's tail feathers sent the normally dignified colt off into a fit of giggles. "Vinesh, you're missing your tail. What happened? Did you give it as a present to some filly somewhere?" he asked jokingly. He dearly loved Vinesh, but Vinesh wasn't quite the best singer amongst the kirindae. His voice was a little too high, and sometimes grated on the ears, though he was too dignified to say something like that.

"Mama..." As his brother began to giggle, Vinesh wished the ground would swallow him whole - dust-coloured Kirin to dust.
"No! Not a present!" He said, angry tears springing to his eyes. "She stole them from me! All I wanted to do was practice singing, and instead this... fake... admirer...
She pretended to listen to me, but all she wanted was a piece of my tail! And now she's taken all of it."
Two glistening droplets rolled down his cheeks as he spoke - the peacock foal was overcome with shame, shame, shame.
"Now I'm never gonna have Dad's tail. I'm gunna be dust-coloured the rest of my life!"

Aoibheann couldn't help it. She laughed long and hard. Sometimes, Vinesh amused her no end, just as Clifton had occasionally done when he was Vinesh's age. "Sounds like she admired you so much, she had to have a piece of you for yourself." She was just as glad that Vinesh had gotten away from the Pryrin, and she allowed herself a brief moment of pride in the fact that he had succeeded in escaping. "As for your tail...it'll grow back by the time you're grown up. You'll stop being dust colored someday. Clifton, Elune, Rementh and I were brown when we were little, and look how we turned out." She nuzzled Vinesh. "Just be patient, and you'll be as bright and beautiful as everyone else, dear."
((Rofl, when I typed "tail", I initially typed "fail". xd *Kicked*))
Zephyr continued to snigger until his mother shot him a warning glance, at which point he settled down enough to make some attempt at dignity. "At least it sounds like you finally found someone who appreciates you." He completely sympathized with Vinesh's worries about color, and the fact that everyone else in the family (possibly except Daddy) was born brown both startled and relieved him. At least he wasn't totally alone anymore, and it sounded like he and his brother would stop being brown someday.

Mayur, too had been worrying over Vinesh. His worry for his son was clear across the stallion's face. He had looked for the little colt on his own and when he returned he found Aoibheann had already found him. Trotting over he joined them at her side. "Your mother is right, your feathers will grow back. And as time passes you will become brightly colored as well." A small smile crossed his face the worry which had been placed on it lifted. His muzzle then dropped as he light nuzzled Vinesh.

His face a comical mask of mourning, Vinesh returned his mother's nuzzle by hiding under one of her wings, snuffling into Dad's throat-mane with a small giggle
"Okay, Dad... I believe you."
Vin eyed his father's handsome plumage and cracked a weak smile as he imagined himself, and his brown brother, slowly growing up into something like that. As his baby horn brushed a few of his mother's feathers, he suddenly remembered something, and became much more animated than before.
"Mom, Dad! Guess what! While I ran from that mean lioness.... I flew into a tree to escape her!"

Clifton hadn't seen his parents in a while, and he knew that his new siblings Vinesh and Zephyr would be excited to see their older brother. Heck, maybe he could even give them a few flying lessons. ((lol)) Although, the landing might not be too great.
Clifton made his way through the forest and soon he caught the scents of his family on the breeze. They were nearby. He followed their trail and had noticed another kirin's scent nearby as well. Someone who didn't belong to his family, that was for sure. He kept an ear out for anything approaching, and soon came upon the other members of his family.
"Hey mom. Hey pops." he grinned at them, and looked down towards his brothers, quickly noticing that Vinesh was missing his tail feathers. "Woah little brother! What happened to you?" he asked, trying very hard to stifle his laughter. His body shook with the effort. "Did you do that Zephyr?"

((Vinny is sooo going to keel us for all this later. If Aoibheann doesn't. xd ))
Aoibheann smiled at her beloved, handsome mate. Vinny's next comment almost pushed her into a heart attack. "A LIONESS CHASED YOU?! Vinesh, you could have DIED! You are BEYOND lucky you managed to get into that tree to escape with only a few missing tailfeathers, young man. You are NOT leaving the family's sight until you are old enough to understand what could have happened to you!" Never had any of Vinesh's four older siblings ever done something as foolhardy and dangerous as go near a Pryrin who might very well have Kirkani tendencies, and that Vinesh...that Vinny...that he.... Aoibheann just buried her face in Vinesh's baby feathers and cried, not noticing Clifton, for once.
Zephyr, however, did notice that Clifton had arrived. His mother's fit worried him. "Ummm, no, I didn't, Clifton. I think Vinny tried to serenade a lioness and that's why he's missing tail feathers." Seeing Clifton around made him feel happy, but their mother's outburst of fear, anger, and worry was upsetting him. "Clifton, what's a lioness?" He'd never heard of one before, so maybe Clifton could explain why their mother was so upset....

Clifton was startled by his mom's sudden outburst and tears, and immediately became serious. "Uhh. Wow Vinny. That was a close call. Hopefully you learned something from this. You definitely shouldn't wander off on your own anymore." He looked at his youngest brother and shook his head. "I'm glad I was a little smarter than that when I was younger."
He thought about Zephyr's question. "A lioness? Well, it's a type of kirin who you definitely don't want to mess with. They're pretty fierce, and don't eat the normal diet like we do. Why do you think it attacked Vinny? Its' kind likes to eat other kirin. I know it's a scary thing, but it's something you should know, and take care to remember." He looked towards his mother. "Mom, he's okay. Calm down. Vinny will be more careful from now on, right brother?"He gave his little brother a stern look, and a wink. He didn't want to scare him too much.

This definitely wasn't the reaction Vin expected to get. Hello? He flew? For the first time? His tail had already been plucked and now he was getting drenched in lady-tears. Something told him he looked like a storm-battered Benu bird right now.
"Sheesh, Mom. She wasn't much bigger than I am, and she ran slower, too. Besides, I only wandered off because all of you kept complaining about my singing!"
At the last bit, he stamped front hoof, barely making a baby print in the ground.
"Look, I did learn how to fly. Watch!"
With that, Vin struggled free of his mother, ran a few meters forward, bunched his legs together and flapped as hard as he could. It was messy, and amateurish, but flight nonetheless. The little foal squealed gleefully, then tried to wheel back to his family ("Look at me, Ma, look at me!")... only to crash land as he found himself descending too fast when he turned.
((I'm assuming tail feathers be needed for proper navigation. xD))

Mayur's eyes went wide when he heard the type of Kirin his son had encountered. A little shudder went down his spine, a lioness, how did he hate those types of kirin. "Vinny I do agree with yoru mother on this." He said sternly his hooves pawing at the ground. He would not have his family being threatened like this. Maybe he should go find this little Lioness Kirin and teach her a lesson. Still calming his mate down came first. He nuzzled his face into her neck "He's safe, and that's all that matters now, that and I will make sure there will be no next time,"

((Yeah, tail-feathers for navigation, and less baby fluff in the wings for true flight. xd ))
Zephyr was spooked by the description of the kirin that had attacked his brother. "So...Vinny could have been dinner?" Vinny's reaction left him a little nonplussed, but the flight impressed him. At least he could give him credit for flight. "Wow! You really can fly, but...please, Vinny, don't hang around kirin like that again. You could be someone else's lunch." He totally sympathized with his parents and elder brother, but he didn't want to alienate Vinny, which was why Vinny had almost gotten eaten in the first place, so he said nothing.
Aoibheann sighed into her mate's neck, turning to do so after watching Vinny's brief flight. She gave him a brief smile of encouragement that still did not succeed in hiding how frightened for Vinny she was. "Wait til your proper flight feathers have grown in, Vinny, then you'll be able to fly better." She walked over, still crying a little, and nudged him gently to his feet, doing her best not to touch any bruises.

Clifton watched his brother wrestle away from his mother's clutches and scamper away. He was about to reprimand him but the thought quickly left his mind when his youngest brother lifted from the ground with his first flight. The astonishment turned to amusement in almost the same amount of time, when Vinny crash landed on the ground again. He tried very hard to control himself, but couldn't help the laughter that escaped his mouth.
After a few seconds, he stifled the laughter. "Nice try fuzztail, but I think you might want to wait til those tail feathers grow back in."
He turned to Zephyr. "What about you? Have you tried to fly yet?"
He remembered back to his youth, when his father had taught him to fly. He cringed at the many failures he had accumulated. His flying had still not improved very much.

Vinesh shook off the dirt that clung to him, body aching slightly where it had hit the ground.
"Mom, Clifton... when will that be? I can't wait to fly properly!" He gushed, thinking of all the places he wanted to get up to. There was a nice spot halfway up a cliff he'd spotted a while ago - he could get an unblocked view of the sunrise from there!
"And yeah Zeph, you should give it a try sometime. It's not that hard, and I'm sure you can do better with your tail... intact."
Vinny twisted and craned his neck, curious to see what his butt looked like now. It definitely felt a little chilly down there/
((Ok... I've run out of things for Vin to do. I guess we can change the focus to a flying lesson for Zeph? Or do you guys want it to be a separate RP and end this one off somehow?))

((I vote for wrapping this one up. ^^))
Zephyr grinned halfheartedly. "Not yet. I was going to wait until Mom and Dad started teaching me, but since Vinny's succeeded a bit, I do want to try." His smile turned sad and disappointed. "But if I don't have enough of the right feathers yet, I'll still have to wait for Mom and Dad to teach me." He sighed in disappointment.
Aoibheann smiled at her excited younger sons. "You'll be able to start learning soon, though you won't be able to fly properly for some weeks yet." She grinned at Vinny. "Since you got ahead of us like that, it'll be a while longer to start teaching you, since you have to regrow your tail." She couldn't help it now that she'd relaxed. She laughed at her youngest's missing tail and his pink hindquarters where his feathers had been quite neatly plucked out.
