The ebb and flow of the waves, the scent of the salt and seaweed and sea life - it smelt like home. Leilani shook her short tresses lightly, basking beneath the sun that played so many games of hide and seek with her beyond the swift clouds that dotted the sky. A brisk wind trailed in from out there on that deep blue expanse, the kind that filled her lungs with the thick scent of origins and her body with pleasant little chills.
Somewhere to the northwest, the land bridge was captured again by the waters, she was sure of it. It had been a few days since she'd arrived on the mainland, though she'd clung to the beaches and the familiar terrain of the forests that thrived so close to the brine and foam - so alike the ones she played in, lived in, on the island.
And yet... so... different.
The color of her home was lost here, the bright, vibrant hues for darker, more earthly tones a strange contrast. She of course was the oddest piece of all, all bright and vibrant pink. If only there were at least some flowers around here of such a wonderful color, cheer up the drab wood.
Her hooves continued to sink bit by bit into the sand as she remained lost in thought, her front legs sopping wet with each incoming wave that rushed over her fur. Such a drab wood... this whole place was rather drab. No big bright colors, nothing especially special beyond the beaches which granted her such lovely access to the sea. But that was it. It was all she'd seen of the mainland that held any interest for her as of yet.
And no hide or hint of her brother, either.
The mare sighed in a most feminine of ways, a classically deep yet soft sound, so forlorn and tragic. And she didn't even act - she really was so forlorn and tragic about such a train of thought. If she couldn't find something of the simplest of interest to her here, how could she ever hope to find her dear baby brother?

Alvilda was reluctantly getting used to this new land. So long as she stayed by the water, she was growing more comfortable. True, it was not as humid here as it had been those rare times she was on the tropical islands, and the land did not sway as the ship did. Still, it was... nice. That was all she would admit to, but given her grudging heart, it was a step up. The water was cold though, and the sea life she had seen was entirely foreign to her.
The colors weren't as bright here either. On board the ship, the two-leggers had surrounded the hold with their bright clothes and stolen silks. You would think life aboard a ship would be all in brown, but the pirates themselves always wore bright colors, and life had been a feast for the eyes. The times Alvilda had gone on the mainland islands (and she had stayed there for a moon or two), it had been colorful and beautiful, and she had found a new sense of home and purpose. Even Portugal provided more sights than this.
Thus it was that an extremely bright pink color caught Alvilda's eyes. It was out of context in the landscape, and decidedly foreign. Was it one of her shipmates? Was it some sort of treasure? A grove of forbidden tropical flowers, fighting against all odds for purchase in this less rainy environment? No... it was another soquili. An odd looking one at that- a horn, and a bright pink hue, with a decidedly feminine sigh. Well, at least it wasn't a stallion. Alvilda would have turned tail and run if it had been, but the idea of female companionship, and the sheer incongruity of the mare, appealed to her.
"Ahoy! What manner of beast are you?" Alvilda had never seen a unicorn before. The horn looked sharp and dangerous, so she stayed back, muscles tensed, ears flicked back. If there had been onlookers, surely they would have laughed at the picture the two painted- bright pink unicorn and fiercely tattooed pirate mare. They didn't look like they would make a pair, but who could tell?

The flowery female jumped, startled from her thoughts by the sudden call. Eyes wide and blinking in innocent confusion, she looked to the newcomer. "Who? Me?" Of course, it must be her, what with no others but the decorated femme and herself. But Leilani was dumbstruck, keeping in silence as she allowed her eyes to peer inquisitively. What a sight she was! All strange designs and random objects strung up in her mane and tail and... were those pieces of metal through her ear? And was that bone that did the same, or teeth? She couldn't tell, but regardless she was shell shocked.
"I'm a Unicorn," she replied at last, drawing herself up into a straight and proper stance. It was not personal arrogance that made her do such, rather tradition and a herd's habit of teaching pride and confidence into their younglings. "A healer, or at least that's what I'm best to be." She gave a friendly little smile, a flick of her long tail. "They call me Leilani, though, if I may... what exactly are you?"
Her curious gaze wandered over the debris - feathers, seaweed, driftwood - and carefully intricate pieces - beads, bracelets, precious metals of various kinds - with a look of both awe and respect. Appearances were never something to dwell on, though first impressions were always taught to be such as to reflect one's personality for the world to see. Surely this mare would stun and marvel the elders in how perfectly she kept to that.
"I've never seen someone look quite like you before, are you a native here?" Would all the creatures she meet here be so... unique? Perhaps it wouldn't be so boring after all, already she was beginning to rethink her previous thought of it being "dull."

]Alvilda may have never before seen a unicorn, but she had heard of them. The pirates often spoke of the captain possessing the horn of one, which helped him heal after battle. Most everyone said it was a lie conjured up to prevent even the whispers of a mutiny, but it had worked well. So that's what a unicorn horn had come from. Knowing that it came from a creature so close to herself, Alvilda felt slightly saddened. It seemed rather cruel to part a unicorn from its horn.
At the question of what was she, Alvilda found herself laughing out loud. The question seemed so absurd, coming from someone with a horn on her head, a tail like a lion, and hooves like a goat. But it deserved an answer. "I'm just a normal soquili, I suppose. But I've had an abnormal life style. All this... detritus," (it seemed the appropriate word) "comes from time spent at sea, with two-leggers who were not so pure in personality. And then I came here, and some of the things you see in my mane and tail now are from the sand and sea." It was difficult to explain without getting into too much detail, but Alvilda was not ready to relinquish her past just yet. Not the unsavory aspects, at least.
"Ah, no. I'm no native here. In fact, I just came here. I was on board a ship. Er... a wooden device that carries two-leggers." Ethan had never seen a ship, and Alvilda took for granted that Lei hadn't either. Mayhaps she had. She seemed curiously out of place here, but one could never tell.
"There was a storm at sea. I think the ship was dashed against the rocks, and everyone drowned. I woke up, and there were planks of wood around me. There were no others though. I've been here a few days, but I've stayed on the beach. I've only seen one other, but he had two horns, instead of one, and one of his legs was a tree." Alvilda could think of no better way to explain the half-kalona Ethan. He had to be seen to be believed, she thought.
"Are you new here? You look more like you would belong on the tropical isles instead of this place of cold waters..." The mare shuddered once, to emphasize her extreme dislike for the water temperature here. [/size ]
