About a century ago, these tunnels were constructed to deliver fresh water from the river to the capital city without having to rely on the power of water elementalists. This is the main source of local wells and taps through out the town.
The tunnels themselves can also exist to resist floods and channel water from the streets to the sea. Other underlying purposes have come about for these winding tunnels as well. As one leaves the water channels behind, they will find that there are catacombs leading to the nearby temples of Arithmathia and a few underground organizations have hollowed out caverns as their personal headquarters.

Maryl stood before the old brick entry to the underground passage leading in. The sound of flowing water echoed out from the entry but other than that it was incredibly dark. She looked down at the parchment and sighed, "Well, I guess this is the way the bailiff was talking about. I sure hope there's nothing creepy down there." After pocketing the parchment sheet, Maryl gripped her staff in one hand and started on her way into the tunnel.

At the end of the entry hall was a large room. Running perpendicular to the entrance passage was a brick channel with water flowing from end to end of the room. The water entered pouring in from a shaft on the south ceiling and exited the room through metal grating bars into a tunnel to the north. There is a wooden bridge with hand railings crossing the artificial river. The bridge appears to be fairly new compared to its surroundings. The walls and ceiling are brick, green with moss and cemented together. The only disruptions in the wall are the gratings, the entry passage, and another passage across the bridge to the northwest.

Maryl noticed the tunnel getting darker. She wasn't terribly enthusiastic about traveling underground, but since it was for a more permanent job it was time to suck it up. Holding onto questions of relevancy, Maryl sped across the bridge and turned to the passage ahead. She wanted to avoid an unnecessary stop or running into a grue.

The following passage came to an immediate end in a perpendicular hallway. Immediately south lied an old iron door with a padlock and loop sealing it shut. To the north, the passage continued into the darkness.

Maryl held up the wand trying to force more light out of it so she could see better. Coming to a wall and paths in each direction, she sighed, "A map... would have been nice..." Arcing her head to the left, she saw a door reaching out of the darkness. To the right complete darkness. She figured she'd try her luck with the locked door. Noticing the padlock on the door, she held her free hand out over the lock. A small magic circle appeared at her palm and a small blob of acid formed from the circle, dropping onto the lock.

The loop on the lock melted away with the acid, dropping the remainder of the lock to the ground with a dull clunk. The door creaked open slightly, letting out a small gust of warm muggy air. Silence emerged from the cracked entry, but nothing more.

Maryl shut her eyes at the rush of air coming out. It came as a surprise since usually it's cooler beneath the surface. Using a spell, she let her wand float nearby, still upright to provide light. Grasping the handle with both hands, Maryl grunted as she yanked at the heavy iron door trying to open it wider so she could enter the room beyond.

Within the room was a faint ceiling light, much like a firefly. There were shelves against the walls ransacked but left with a few boxes. Tools were strewn about the shelves floor and table. And a body of an older man lay upon the floor in a pool of smeared dried blood occupying the back corner of the room.
((Uh, thanks for being patient. I'm still trying to figure out how this should run.))

Trying to ignore the foul stench that emanated about the area, Maryl slowly made her way around the room looking around at all the obsolete equipment. She noticed a dark smear on the floor and slowly traced it to the source. Seeing the remains of a person on the floor made her hair stand on end. She managed to hold back a scream, but the panic inside was too much. After a few slow back steps toward the door, she turned and fled up the hallway.

The long hall opened up into a semi cavernous foyer. The still brick section of the room took up the eastern side and was winding continuation of the river flow toward town. The west side was a hewn stone passage along the riverside stretching further north. At the far end lies two doors embedded into the stone wall. One continuing north, and another adjacent to the corner, heading west. both doors are large iron doors with a bit of rust from the mist in the air.

Out of fear, Maryl continued running through the passage. She kept her head down and clutched her things as she followed the route to the north. Reaching the wall, she shut her eyes and tugged at the handle of northern door with all her strength, struggling to open it. "Nnh! Ugh! ...just Open!"

After a bit of work to loosen the door from its rusted hinges, it popped open and swung open slightly. The room beyond led to a catwalk including stairs going up to a higher walkway leading back to the east to another iron door, and stairs going down leading to an area that was slightly submerged into the reservoir below. Water poured in from the wall and filled the circular room's bottom.

Maryl fell backward from the door popping open, landing on her rear. "Ahh!" She slowly stood up and dusted herself off, taking another glance behind her to the south hall before going through the door. A short decision sent Maryl climbing up the stairs to the upper catwalk. She took a moment to calm down as she jogged up to the east door.
