User ImageBreath formed in heated clouds, dissolving into the surprisingly cold air. Enveloped in stars, the night sky spread out over the grassy terrain - no, it embraced it, he felt, as he stood out on the field. Something within him had stirred him awake enough times that he, in a vexed state of resignation, finally brought himself up and out of his hole for a bit.

It likely wasn't the smartest idea, wandering out at night in unfamiliar lands. That would hold true were he not the breed he was, in any case. Dark wings unfurled against the night sky, his body shifting and stretching, each pop followed by a low grunt. He hadn't felt this stiff in a while, having been unsure of where to lay for the night.

You picked a damn bad spot, he thought, ducking his head low to pop his neck. His wings felt like cardboard glued to his back, and if he didn't take to the sky soon, he felt like they were going to fall off. His chest rising with a heavy sigh, Viraj braced himself and began a gallop across the plain.

Once he was certain he'd gained sufficient momentum, he flapped his wings and took to the air, eyes closing against the burst of cold air against his face. It still perplexed him how, upon coming here, it had been terribly hot, but then it became cold that very same night. He felt as if he'd entered a desert, although this was obviously not the case.

For a few minutes he dove around, feeling his muscles loosen and his mind clear itself. The day had not been very eventful; a lot of wandering, a lot of awkward encounters, but mostly boring. He had yet to establish a place for himself in these new lands, although that was no surprise, as it had only been a day. Still, the idea of wandering alone for longer than a week was a bit of a cause for concern.

Cloven hooves landed with a soft 'thud' against the ground as Viraj allowed himself to pace a few feet before stopping, feeling at once better. He didn't know what sort of creatures resided in the Kawani lands, and had yet to meet another night owl, so as far as he was concerned, the night was his.

His tail flicking lazily, Viraj snorted another deep breath, suddenly becoming aware of the silence of the night. Save for the familiar chirps of crickets, the world seemed devoid of noise, and it left a ringing in his ears. He shook his head quickly to get rid of it, loathing it, but knowing he couldn't do anything about it. Even in silence, if only one person yelled, it was still deafening and unbearable.

Gods, he would kill for someone to talk to. Or fight with. Just some sort of interaction; he was by no means a solitary creature. He needed his followers, and he needed them now.

Pacing and obviously disgruntled, Viraj did what any "healthy" stallion would do, and began talking to himself. Anything to hear a voice. He wasn't proud of his dependence on others, and would never tell anyone that, although he was the one pursuing minions to take under his wing, to depend on him, he really needed them.

It was deliciously ironic. Tipping his head back, he let out a low, quiet laugh, closing his eyes against the stars.

To think there's been a time when he'd been content sneaking off from his parents and chasing bear cubs... only to get chased and nearly mauled by their angry mother, in turn. Well, those childish games had faded long ago, and he'd been crafted into a stronger, smarter beast. That was what he liked to tell himself, anyway. Swooping through the cold winds never ceased to amuse the thrill-seeker within him, and the stallion made up for whatever grace he lacked with tireless energy. Save for the eerie gleam of his eyes and the thundering of his wings, Kerberos blended in quite well with the darkened sky.

Once he'd had his mindless fun, the stallion snapped his wings out and allowed himself to glide, his body aching pleasantly in a good sort of way. He lived to push himself--hadn't that been the reason he'd come all the way to this place, far from the watchful eye of his mother and father? Oh, true, he was sure they wanted him gone so they could enjoy some time to themselves. His mother acted like quite the she-devil, but Kerberos had learned many a thing or two from her, and greatly respected her cunning, manipulative mind. His father... well, he had bestowed his terrible temper upon his son, and the great strength that came with it.

What didn't he have to be proud of?

It was the unexpected sound of laughter that interrupted his trailing thoughts, and a gleaming eye angled itself downward to curiously scour the earth in search of its creator. Truly, it was too dark to see much, but he'd gotten a good idea of where it'd come from. Back winging silently until his hooves grazed the cooling earth, the young male surely made quite an impression with only his eyes glowing dimly in the shadows. There was definitely someone here--he could smell them. Who or what... well, that was to be determined.

"Somethin' particularly funny? Or is that just your way of getting attention?" The words could have been biting, but had been phrased more as a soft, amused drawl. "s**t like that can get you trouble--unless you can handle it." Whoever this was, he sure as hell wasn't acting like he was slinking around in the shadows to keep his a** safe!

Whatever amusement he had found was lost with the intrusion of another voice. Without turning, he tried to analyze it; young, arrogant, probably some stallion out looking for a bit of fun. Snorting out a breath, Viraj turned his body to face his intruder, silently hoping he wasn't going to have his first run-in with a Skinwalker. The things were nasty as the day was long, and so he instinctively tensed, ready to take to the sky should he need to.

Thankfully, this was not necessary. Instead of a bloodied pelt or cruel, heartless eyes, he met a pair of wild ones, glowing dimly in the darkness. Having already grown semi-used to the lack of light, he attempted to inspect the sight before him. His first instinct was that he was a kid looking for a fight, which he would gladly oblige to, given his current circumstances. However, jumping straight to brawling never got anyone anywhere productive. His chest heaving in a heavy breath, the older stallion shook his head, feeling a smirk tug at the corner of his mouth.

"And what would I be expecting to find in this desolate darkness? A bat?" He wouldn't admit it, but he was already more than happy to have company, no matter how young and wild. He took his words with an amused, short laugh, feeling himself wake up.

"Going to teach me a lesson, are you?" he grunted, his voice devoid of any threat or malice. It was closer to teasing, which he hoped would stir some sort of amusing reaction from the other. Furling his wings a bit, he gave the kalona another once-over, deciding he was certainly decorated enough to create fear in many an individual. Shrugging a shoulder the best a horse could, he added quietly, his voice very deliberate, "I've handled bigger fish."

"If you need to be taught, sure..." Kerberos let his wings fold casually against his sides, comfortable, relaxed, and unconcerned. As far as he was concerned, any danger this place could throw at him was a joke. So long as he played it smart, hell, he might as well have some fun as long as he was awake, huh? That was until the geezer started running his mouth a little, and whatever movement he'd just done, it'd been pretty damn dismissive. Though the statement had been calm and quiet, the youth bristled all over, let dark lips slide back to expose his teeth and pale gums.

"I'd watch your ********' mouth, if I were you." The growl was low, but rumbled on and on in his throat. He was moving now, beginning to circle slowly around the relative area he knew the other was standing, letting his tail snap through the air until it hissed. Who the hell did this guy think he was? Couldn't even see him, but though he could say s**t like that? Well, he'd better be prepared to back it up.

His neck snaked forward in a mock-lunge, twisting horns dangerously close to the stallion's sides... but it wasn't a serious attack, and even if the other chose not to move, it wouldn't connect. Nu-uh, he was gonna see if he couldn't rattle this punk up first, laugh at him a little, and then get down to business. That stunt had given him a good look at the relative shape of the stallion--and he was Kalona! Well that was just dandy... He would prove himself as someone not to be messed with, even if that meant roughing up his own kind to earn some respect!

Oh, he recognized this display.

Although he, having been young and rash at a point in his life, fully understood the need to put on airs and bravado, the movements and tone of the kalona still incited a low, rumbling laugh from deep within his chest. What a pleasure to meet someone as entertaining as this one! And judging by the sound of leathery wings folding, and of horns drawing close to his side, he determined him to be a kalona.

He did not flinch when the other feigned his attack, but his tail did flick in a way reminiscent of a cat as it prepared itself to pounce on an object.

"Hit a nerve, did I?" Viraj asked, his laugh fading into his smooth voice. "A kid with something to prove... I've seen your type before. Go ahead - let it all out."

As the stallion circled him, he waited until their eyes met again, his lip curling back into an almost-sneer. He doubted the kalona could see him very well, and the flash of teeth would likely be missed, but his words obviously were enough on their own to rile the boy up.

It was no surprise that a kalona was attempting to put him in his place; it had been the same back home, and many times he had had the pleasure of dealing with it. The situation was entirely too funny to pass up in itself, and he saw no need to end it quickly.

So now he was being mocked?

If his temper had been a ticking time bomb before, it was just now beginning to detonate. Though he did have to strain to see the faint shiftings of movement, the condescending tone, as predicted, was enough to have his jaws gaped in a full-throated snarl. "Let's see you say s**t after you've proven something, old man..."

Somewhere, he knew he was overreacting... but then again, he'd never bee outright insulted before, either. It made his blood hot and riled, and though he knew he should ignore it and ride it out, it was just that much more satisfying to be able to put someone in their rightful place. Time to see if he could use what mommy and daddy gave him, huh?

Another lunge, but this one was meant to draw blood. His teeth were bared and ready to sink into the first bit of flesh that presented itself, regardless of the damage he might take in turn. That was just his style--win out through endurance and be the last one standing. His tail would snap around as well, not above leaving a stinging blow in hopes of throwing the older male off balance.

Though he was young and had plenty of energy to keep going, could that prevail against experience?

Oh, how he enjoyed baiting this boy. He knew now that he was dealing with an incredibly aggressive kalona, and was relieved to discover he wasn't all talk. It was time to prove that he, too, had a bit of bite with his bark.

Shifting his weight onto one side, Viraj braced himself and willingly took the bite, allowing his teeth to sink into his shoulder, although his tail whipped out to curl around the other's before it connected. Now having caught the kalona in an almost-hold, he grunted and prepared to bring it back with something of his own. Teeth bared to show every glistening fang, he took his opportunity to lunge his opened mouth down to his neck.

He was not aiming to kill, or even to create a gaping wound. Experience taught him how to deal with restless young ones, and his only intention was to overpower him, not to maim him. This would likely prove to be a feat, as the kalona was not lacking in muscle or strength, as well as youth. Fate would see how his first skirmish in the Kawani lands would turn out.

A hit! His lips curled away as he unexpectedly tasted blood; Soquili had never been prey, nor had he ever considered truly hunting one. His jaws tightened then, trying to hold on though it'd be a tricky feat; the other was clearly muscled and this was an odd angle. Better to let go and try again, but even as he began to shift his weight, his own tail was jerked to be used against him.

He staggered right into the blow, hot air hissing past his gritted teeth as pain flared through his neck. Didn't have time to focus on the damage, and Kerberos shook himself furiously. So those teeth would tear through a little deeper--if it'd get him free, that was all that mattered. His head jerked and twisted the best it could, trying to scrape his horns against skin. His teeth were grinding so loudly that the other could probably here them, and the stallion attempted to shift his hooves so he could try--somehow--to bludgeon the other's legs with them.

This wasn't going exactly how he'd planned, but he could deal with messy...

The bitter taste of blood ran through his teeth and into his mouth. It was much more than he was expecting to get from one bite, but on account of the other's attempts to get free, it made sense. The kalona's violent jerking made it very difficult to hold on, and although he tried to bite down harder to keep his grip, the combination of rapid head movement and the shifting of his legs causes him to scrape away from the wound, his teeth grating against skin as he went.

It was exhilarating as hell! He'd never had the chance to spar with someone who fought wildly and without real direction; it was as if the stallion literally had nothing to lose. To be able to fight so ferociously so late in the night, with the darkness around them and the only source of light being the moon... it made a shiver course through his body. This was a true fighter.

Having kept his weight on the legs outside of the kalona's attacks allowed Viraj to keep his footing, although he forced himself back a step to better face his opponent. As he did so, his tail uncurled from Kerberos'. Blood was dripping from his jaw and staining the grass, and he tried not to taste it. Wouldn't be good if he acquired a taste for Soquili; face contorting, he spat it out onto the ground and brought himself back, lowering his head much like a bull would.

Tail whipping violently back, he rushed the kalona, teeth bared and shoulder burning in pain. Even a simple lunge would have hurt, thanks to the bleeding wound, but he dove with such force that he wanted to yell out in the process, which he stifled by biting down on his lip terribly hard.

What did he have to lose? His reputation was at stake, his strength! The very things that made his family who and what they were, gave them respect despite the scorn they received for their ideals... and more than that, Kerberos didn't want to lose. A bruised ego, though not fatal, would be devastating, especially when he had thought so highly of himself up till now.

Perhaps the other was enjoying himself, but he hadn't been in enough fights to completely let go yet, still too angry. As soon as he was able to yank himself away, he did, snorting and snarling with bloody froth flecking his jaws. Wings snapped themselves out with a huge 'thwack', unconsciously making himself bigger before he realized his opponent was suddenly barreling towards him.

Without thinking, the young male reared up on his hinds with a scream, lashing out with heavy hooves to try and catch the other in the face. Of course, it left him wide open for those horns to slam right into his gut, knocking the wind out of him and leaving him gaping like a fish. The sheer force and weight behind the enemy stallion sent him dangerously off balance--and Kerberos was suddenly tipping, limbs flailing helplessly until he landed on his side with a heavy crunch.

The shriek that burst from him was purely of agony this time, and the stallion scrambled wildly to his feet, right wing hanging limply at his side. He somehow looked even more deranged this way, jaws gaping as he heaved heavy, gasping breaths, fangs still bared, still bloodied.

"You'll be... screaming... when I'm ********' through with you..." He managed to hiss, widening his stance slightly to prepare for another charge.

What... what the hell?

Something cold filled his chest when he heard the shriek of the stallion; it felt as if his veins were filled with ice. He'd heard screams of pain before, and had seen much worse, but somehow, seeing it happen to one so young made him feel immediate regret. In the short time they'd interacted, he'd already grown a bit fond of the kalona, envying him for his spirit and perseverance, no matter how borderline-idiotic it made him.

Ignoring the sickening sound wing-against-ground had made, Viraj shook his head quickly, gathering his thoughts. He couldn't let it go on like this. At this rate, the stallion would succumb to his wounds and possibly pass out, from the looks of him, either from exhaustion or blood loss. His intention had been to set the boy in his place, to show a greenhorn that the world didn't belong to him to shove around.

Some minds needed more time to be convinced, however.

Taking this to be the case, he took a few steps back, folding his wings carefully at his sides. Should the stallion rush him again, as he looked ready to do, he didn't want to meet the same fate. Animals could do incredible things when cornered.

"That's enough."

His tone surprisingly steady, Viraj kept his hooves firmly in place, staring intently into his opponent's eyes. He was trying to establish a look of authority and calm with his height and stance, but he knew the other wouldn't see it his way. He would probably fight until he quite literally dropped.

Although he'd started out enjoying the fight, the fact that it led to something this bad made him wish it hadn't managed to progress to such levels of violence. While he did enjoy sparring - it was in his blood, after all - he was also a man of taste, and rarely did he fight to kill. Shoulders shaking with a raking breath, he took a moment to regain himself.

"You are going to get yourself... killed," he began, his body remaining tensed, glued to that spot on the ground and ready to be a wall, but also prepared to move, should he feel the need. He knew this one would never accept defeat until he learned the hard way, and even then, the idea of the notion existing within his world might remain impossible. Still, he had to try. He was the older one there, and it was his personal responsibility to attempt to help the excited stallion regain some sense.

"You bloodied thing. It's never going to break, is it?" He ran his tongue over his teeth, tasting the blood, the bitterness. It tasted odd. "Your spirit, I mean. I wonder if you can even hear me."

He was a ticking time bomb, and Viraj was going to get caught up in it if he couldn't help it. He braced himself for the worst, shoulders set, legs straight, eyes open.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 17, 2009 8:38 pm

His lips were twitching with pain besotted rage, the worst of his fury punctured and deflated by the devastating damage he'd just sustained. So when the stallion suddenly backed up, the young adult shook his head, nostrils flaring with frustration. Enough? He was going to smack the bear over the head with a stick and then say it was enough?

"You gonna kill me?" He shot at the other at that, tail snapping back and forth to strike his own flanks, trying to keep his temper up. It was a lot harder to think about what he was being told and still try to figure out how he wanted to maul this guy. Of course, being insulted again was enough to make his ears slowly flatten, and the fury began to die to foul-tempered irritation as the throbbing pain took over most of his emotions.

"My wing's what's banged up, not my brain." Came the growl, low, heated... and then the teeth were sheathed with soft, black velvet, and the stallion twisted his head away to glower into the darkness he couldn't pick through. From insulting, to condescending, to lecturing? "Need to make up your mind about what you want, goddamn it."

His position was still rock-hard, refusing to waver although the blood oozing through his fur was now beginning to steadily drip. What had all this been for? So he could lose, make a fool of himself? To act and then be treated like a child, to stand here, so baleful and resenting, and wait to see what this jackass would do next?

Typical. Just his ******** luck.

Viraj drew himself up, snorting a hot breath through his nose; it burned to exhale now, and flecks of blood followed his snort, which he paid little attention to. He was aware that blood was trickling out of many orifices, not all of them natural, but he was in good shape when lined up next to the other.

"I will not kill you," he spoke, voice low and calm. "And I am aware of what an a** I must look like right now." True, he had accepted the other's challenge, even let himself have a bit of fun, but now that the boy was sufficiently bruised, the game was no longer a game. He hadn't been looking for a brawl, and that was his fault, he supposed. Should have known the kid wasn't just out for a friendly match.

Still, he felt compelled to make this one see his way, as he always did. It was a terrible habit, but he simply couldn't resist making others see things from his point of view. If he believed someone had merit to transcend what they were, damn it, he was going to pull it out of them. Although the kalona was still young, he exhibited the sort of personality he'd seen in so many kalonas.

He wasn't sure was bothered him more; the fact that the kalona had lived up to all of his racist expectations, or the fact that more than anything, he wanted that to change.

His tail swished gently behind him, surprisingly passive, given the rest of his stance, the fiery look in his eye. It seemed to carry through his voice, which he kept calm and, he hoped, reassuring. He knew the latter would be lost in translation.

"Give it up, boy. We both went into this for a bit of fun, but now you're severely impaired." As if to convince him, he added with a grunt, "I don't beat up kids for kicks."
PostPosted: Wed Jun 17, 2009 9:44 pm

Hmph. So, he had managed to pay this stranger back in small, insufficient ways. One ear pricked at the unexpected... well, he didn't know what the other meant by degrading himself, but Kerberos wouldn't tell him he was wrong. "I don't know what you were doing, then, but that's one hell of a conversation starter. The ******** do you think you are? You try to piss off whoever's civil to you so you can beat the crap out of them and then act like they're stupid?" All right, yes, he was sour about this whole thing, but seriously! He wasn't going to back down from an insult, especially when he'd only landed because he was curious about who the hell was secure enough to wander about by their lonesome in the dark.

This must have been what his father was talking about. Opinions of others... who gave a s**t? It... was stupid to get riled up by every little thing, and, he thought bitterly, it'd taken a crunched wing to get that through his head. He knew better! Hooves smashed themselves angrily into the dirt, and he whipped himself around and away, unable to even look at the other right now. Goddamn. If there was one thing he hated more than being insulted, it was being wrong and knowing it.

"S'because you're smart." Came the growl. "Not smart enough to ignore when a kid's acting a damn fool in front of you... but didn't kill that kid either, so." His tail was lashing like a mad thing, his rage needing an outlet and turning it on himself. Hell, what would his father say about him now? His mother?

"Might have been fun for you," He corrected roughly, "But I went in there to prove something. And anyone can bash themselves into each other to 'prove' a point, but it takes some ********' brains to..." Kerberos shook himself roughly and winced from how it hurt, stiffened and straightened himself.

He honestly had nothing else to say, his tongue twisted into knots and disgust weighing heavily in his chest. A grand way to impress anyone--not only did he seriously maul himself, but he'd fully lived up to the other's earlier assessment. His steps were slow and jilted as he skulked towards the trees, knowing he needed to find a secluded place where he could stay for a long while.

Funny that he'd been so secure of himself only minutes before; he was easy pickings for hungry predators, now.

Watching the dejected stallion begin his walk to the trees, Viraj couldn't help but chuckle to himself. It was ridiculous! Not only had the boy come up to him with an attitude, but he then proceeded allow himself to be baited so easily, and then he initiated a completely ridiculous fight. True, he thought, he should have been the bigger man and ignored the temperamental stallion, but his own foolishness forbade him from always making the best decisions. Still, perhaps the other learned something.

"Civil?" he asked, making sure his voice was heard. He was no longer laughing, and his voice had again dropped the teasing tone it could have held. "Boy, if that's your idea of 'civil', I think you've got to re-evaluate your social skills."

He was surprised to hear that the kalona had actually come into the fight in all seriousness. A shame, he'd pegged him wrong and had come out pissing him off in the process. Sent him limping in self-pity, even; losing wasn't an easy thing, and hell, did he know it.

Picking up his hooves, which he had been almost certain were cemented to the grass, he flexed his stiff legs a bit, wincing as the movement caused a jolt of pain in his shoulder. Knowing he wouldn't be able to ignore the kid now, he did what he knew would piss him off, regardless. Taking a few steps behind him, he kept his fair distance.

Inclining his chin, his eyes feeling heavy against the battered soquili, he sighed.

"You won't last if you run into any real danger," he warned, picking up his hooves carefully with each step. He wanted to question him on what he meant by being 'smart' when he had just listed beautifully everything that was stupid about him. Somewhere along the lines, he felt a definite hint of self-loathing at the moment, and he concluded that this stallion was busy feeling very sorry for himself.

Well, he remembered his first beating. He hadn't exactly taken it with grace, and, if he remembered correctly, he'd done his fair share of pouting. It was a real kick in the a**, to be beaten up and then offered help from the other, but he wasn't about to let him wander off and be killed after he'd put forth the effort to avoid that.

What had he gotten himself into?
