It was oddly quiet in their little corner near the herdbeast pens, something that Nandeli found a little distressing. Everyone seemed to be giving the youngest queen and her rider some space, which some goldrider might have enjoyed. But for the infamous Nose it was practically torture. Not only did she get her own room in the Weyrling Barracks but now she had to sit alone while she was feeding her dragon? It just wasn't fair! No wonder queenriders never did anything exciting or dramatic.
More please, Reneneth said pointedly, having licked her rider's hand completely clean. The young gold was still hungry, and until she could hunt for herself she was entirely dependant on Nandeli for her food. Normally her rider did not need to be prompted, however today it seemed that something was bothering her, and whatever that something was it was not Ren's hunger. Why are you upset, NandeliMine? The meat is good. You did a good job cutting it up. I will not be hungry once I finish eating. When all was right in her world, then all would be right in her rider's world. At least, that was what she assumed.
"Sorry, Ren. Just got caught thinking about stuff." She reached her hand into the bucket and held out another handful of meat. "Mostly about us. We totally need to get some dinner buddies sometimes soon, okay? How are we ever going to meet all the weyrlings in our group if we don't organize dinner parties? As the queenrider and gold dragon we should help bring people together, you know?" Nan huffed softly.
You miss human companionship.
"Something like that, yeah. I like talking to you, but I gotta be able to spread my gossip around, you know?" Nandeli had told her dragon all about the little tidbits she'd managed to pick up from the kitchen staff during breakfast. Reneneth had been a little confused about her interest in the affairs of two greenriders and a bluerider, but she had listened attentively. The gold wouldn't spread rumours around, however, and Nan was itching to tell somebody who would. Or, at the very least, someone who was interested in it too. All someone had to do was wander too close or look in their direction and they would be snagged.
If they wouldn't come to the Nose of their own free will, then the Nose would make them come.

Given her upbringing, Allende should have had no reason to be curious, let alone grossed out, by the very nature of a feeding dragon. She'd thrown dinner for spit canines before, and had seen more then one wild wherry take down smaller prey and eat it. It was nature working at her finest, and by the First Egg nothing was as sloppy an eater as her brothers! When they had roasts, the juices usually stained every bit of the men except their napkins!
Yet as she paused mid-stride to watch the newest goldrider feed her dragon, Alle couldn't help the shudder that shook her all the way to her toes. She hadn't yet witnessed a grown dragon feeding, but if the stories the cavernwomen told her were even partially true, it was every bit as terrifying as Holder propaganda made it! The small dragon didn't look exactly bloodthirsty, but there was no mistaking a predator for anything else... and Alle hadn't exactly grown up in a dragon-loving household. Shivering again, she clutched the basket of clean rags she was delivering to the beastherders closer.

Nandeli had just been surveying one of the journeymen beastcrafters when Reneneth interrupted her thoughts. There is a girl staring at us over there. Do you wish to talk to her? The gold chewed her mouthful as she stared curiously at Allende. Why did the girl look so unhappy? Did she not like the basket she was carrying? Perhaps it did not contain the foot warmers that she liked. Humans were very peculiar about their foot warmers.
The Nose gave the journeymen one final look before she turned her attention to Allende. No doubt about it, she definitely looked a little scared. Did she expect the gold dragon to turn around and jump her? Nan would have bet a half mark that the girl was probably Holdbred, especially if she thought something like that. But Holdbred or Weyrbred it was the first person she'd managed to make eye contact with (even briefly) and that made her The Chosen One. It probably would have been wiser on Allende's part to have run away the moment Reneneth looked in her direction.
"Hey you there! With the basket! You can come closer if you like!" She waved her free hand amiably at the girl. "Ren won't bite. Promise!"

Trained reactions and her innate curiosity warred briefly within the tall girl the moment the little dragon looked in her direction. She had a chore to see too, first off, but why else was she here? She hadn't come here to do the same chores she could be doing at home.... nor to be scared of dragons had she? Despite her initial repulsion, she found that she couldn't take her eyes off the little gold. Like the rest of her kind, she was a fascinating creature, and as with the larger green that had accompanied L'thor, Alle couldn't decide between being terrified and enamored.
Oh but did she have to lick her jaw and chew like that!
Shaking herself, she was just beginning to turn away when the gold's rider called out. Startled enough that she almost dropped the basket, Alle held onto it as if her life depended on it, and tentatively called back. "T'would be an honor weyrlady, but I.. uhm... wouldn't want to disturb..." Well shards, that was not quite how she wanted to say it! Yet she hadn't wanted to be rude either! She'd been in the Weyr long enough to gather that some folks were pricklier about rank then others, and unless directed otherwise, it was best to just treat every ranking rider (no matter the age) the same. Bianne had certainly drilled it into her head that no matter where she had come from or how new she was, she was in the Weyr now and must abide by the Weyr rules!

Oops. Maybe she shouldn't have said that bit about her not biting. The poor girl looked like she was going to die of fright. Not to mention it couldn't be healthy to hold a basket that tight. She could get basket splinters! But what was done was done and Nandeli had ensnared her victim of the day. Hopefully this girl actually wouldn't mind talking and gossiping with her. That, or she was quiet enough to just let Nan talk. She would take either.
"Don't worry, you're not disturbing anything! Besides, she doesn't mind the company at all. Bit of blood and guts over here, but she's a pretty clean eater. She'll do her best not to get any on you." She beckoned Allende closer, seemingly unbothered by the state of her hands. Though she was more used to peeling tubers than hacking up meat, Nan had learned to cut up meat quite well from the Weyrlingmaster. It helped that she knew F'sey personally (or as close to personally as one could know F'sey) and so the moment she was competent at it he left her well alone. Of course she wouldn't take that to mean he didn't want to deal with her.
"And you don't have to worry about formalities. Not yet, anyways, since she's not full grown and all. She's Reneneth, by the way, and I'm Nandeli. You have a name, don't you?"

Blood and Guts? Do her best not to get any on her? Oh for the love of-!
"Pleasure to meet you Nandeli, Reneneth. I'm Allende." She replied, uncertain if she be a little put out by the girl's nonchalance about... well.. just about everything Allende thought was important in the Weyr. Don't worry about rank, worry about it later. Don't worry, dragons don't mind company other then their riders... but she'd been told at least a half a dozen times not to invade a dragons personal space or speak to a riders dragon directly unless bidden (and even then, only under extreme circumstances!) And what was with that odd note about whether or not she had a name?!
Flustered and trying incredibly hard not to show it, Alle moved close enough to set her basket down and rest her arms and upper body along the top rail of the feeding pens. She'd begun to realize early on that being weyrbred and holdbred meant living in two completely different worlds... but if the little differences were as apparent in small conversations like this, what must they be like between Lord Holders and Weyrleaders?
Shardit she was too uptight!
"Your pardon though, if I'm not as... easy-going about blood and guts as a weyrbred candidate." Best warning she could give the young goldrider... just in case she did something silly and fainted. She wasn't quite up to joking about feeling nauseous, but she hoped that once the overall shock of it wore off, she wouldn't disgrace herself!

"Allende? Nice to meet you!" Poor girl looked like Reneneth was going to jump up from the meat and tear her arm off or something. As if the gold would harm a human in the first place, not to mention kill something when she had a bucket of meat in front of her. Still, Nan wasn't going to be phased by any awkwardness, especially when it was probably only due to shyness. If anybody could cure a person of their shyness it was Nandeli the Nose! (It was one of her many hidden talents).
Somehow she wasn't surprised when Allende admitted that she was Hold-bred. Still, she wouldn't hold it against her (no pun intended). "Aaaah, don't worry about it then! You can look the other way if it bothers you." It would not be the first time that Nandeli had talked to someone's back. In fact it had happened quite a lot in the past, especially when she was dealing with grumpy people. As if they could walk away. Now that she had Reneneth they didn't even really have a choice anymore. Having a gold dragon did have some benefits.
Tell her I am sorry. I am almost finished eating. I do not want her to be distressed in our presence.
Nandeli grinned and gave Reneneth a scritch on one of her eyeridges. "Ren says she'll be finished soon, and she's sorry she's grossing you out a little bit. She'd probably stop eating until you were gone if she wasn't so hungry, so you'll have to excuse her."

Well there was the ticket. A dragon apologizing for being a dragon. Somehow the absurdity of it caused the growing nausea in her belly to subside a bit as the young holdergirl smiled tentatively at the pair. "Please, tell her she doesn't have to apologize for doing as she ought to be doing, I'll take your suggestion and just look away if it bothers me." Wait... was she staying then? When had she decided to stay and chat? Briefly her eyes flickered over to the basket as she weighed her options, before she turned to look back at Nandeli and her dragon. Well, how often was it she got to speak to a female rider, let alone a goldrider? She did have a lot she wanted to know...
And Nandeli did seem amiable, perhaps even a trifle enthusiastic, to a little chat...
"She is beautiful Nandeli, you must be very proud of her." Alle said after a slight pause, forcing herself to look past the blood and see the hatchling for what she was. "If you don't mind my asking, where were you from originally?" She continued, deciding that starting in generally accepted conversation territory was a good, safe route.

Nandeli couldn't help but laugh at Allende's words, though her amusement did not appear to be the malicious kind. "You don't have to ask me to tell her. You can tell her yourself! I know she doesn't look like she has ears, but she can hear you all the same." As if to punctuate her riders point, Reneneth turned her head to look at the Candidate and dipped her head. "She could even talk to you, if she wanted, but I doubt she knows how to." Nan gave the little gold a well placed scritch under her chin. "She'll probably learn one day though. Queens are supposed to be smart and all, right Ren?"
We are very smart. We must be. But even if I learned to speak with others of your kind I do not think I will. We are only supposed to talk to our riders. That is the proper thing to do. But you do not have to tell her that. Reneneth licked the rim of the bucket and then took the next piece of meat that was offered to her.
She couldn't help but grin at the dragon's words even as she turned her attention back to Allende. The girl seemed to have decided to stay, something that pleased Nandeli immensely. She was even starting to talk and ask questions as well! This was definitely a good start. "Thank you! And I'm from here, actually. Weyrborn and raised. Not very exciting, I'm afraid. My mother was from a Hold though. I'm going to take a good guess and say you're from Hold, right? Ista or somewhere else?"

Somehow, Alle wasn't surprised to hear that dragons could speak to whomever they chose. In retrospect, she probably should have been flabbergasted, but the abilities of dragonkind was one of the few things she was absorbing with relative ease here at the Weyr. From talk of winking from one place to another and even between times, to bespeaking their chosen riders in the darkness of a human's lonely mind... Allende took it all in and remembered. Even if nothing else came from her time her at Ista, she was more then happy with what she had started to learn.
"That is kind of you both. I'll remember that." Oh, if Nandeli only knew what kind of person she had snared in Allende. The girl was positively dying on the inside for new things to hear, do, and see..! Not that Alle even knew herself what kind of knowledge hunger she'd awoken in herself the moment she'd first picked up a teaching hide, as it stood... she was almost in a constant state of frustration. Everywhere she turned there was something else she didn't know, something else she'd never heard of and was more often then not scandalized by! Well, up until she figured out the 'why' of the matter. Sharding narrow-minded teachings!
"Somehow, I would be willing to bet that even a quiet life here at Ista is far more exciting then anything happening in my home hold." She ventured, grinning sardonically. "I'm from somewhere else, by the way. My father is a woodcrafter, and his cothold is located just outside of Lemos. "

Nandeli couldn't help but laugh at Allende's words. "I guess you could say that, yeah. When you live in Holds you don't get to see dragons every day, huh? I don't think life is really that different here than it is in the Holds, at least not for the Weyrfolk. Of course dragonriders have a totally different life, but their life revolves around their dragon and doing dragon-y stuff. For the people who work in the Lower Caverns I'd think it's pretty much the same. We make do with what we have, organize meals, clean, mend clothing, and other stuff like that. Some of us get to help with dragon care like bathing, but most of us just do pretty mundane things. I can't say the gossip is boring though!" But that was mostly her doing, so she shouldn't boast. Not when Allende looked like such a nice girl.
She was pleased that Allende had lived near a hold that she had at least heard of. Some days it felt like some of these Candidates practically came straight out of the jungle! Nan had spent hours pouring over maps and charts to see where some of these people lived and their homes never came up. It was highly distressing. "A woodcrafter eh? Were you going to go into woodcrafting before you were Searched or did you have another Craft in mind?" Nandeli had been allowed to try her hand at whittling, but her instructors were not impressed when she simply "peeled" the wood and handed it back. Learning to peel tubers apparently was a skill you could never stop doing.

Nandeli gave what she thought was a sage, understanding nod. Sounded like the protective father syndrome. The daughter, though happy with her father, wished to explore the world on her own without her father shadowing her every step of the way. Allende was not alone in her feelings. Dragonriders sometimes Searched Candidates from families where the parents were overprotective and didn't wish for their little boys and girls to go out into the dangerous world. Sometimes the Candidates even kept that mentality here at the Weyr, following every rule as though their lives depended on it. It was really quite a shame.
"Well, I'm glad you're here then! You'll certainly have some kind of interesting adventures here, and you're always welcome to stay even if you don't Impress. The Lower Caverns needs some good, able-bodied women to keep things running smoothly down there, especially with the over-crowding and such." Not that they'd lost a particularly skilled working in Nandeli, but she liked to think she was at least somewhat useful. At Allende's question she blinked, before laughing. "You've got the right idea, but I didn't just listen to the gossip. They don't call me Nandeli the Nose for nothing!" She was very proud of her position as head gossiper of the tuber peeling corner and it showed. "You'd be surprised at some of the things I've heard around the Weyr. Have you ever met F'sey in your travels? A little on the short side, red hair, rides a green? Well, even if you haven't, word is that he's got himself a weyrmate and he's got his eyes on the newly-made Wingrider H'dra! Can you believe it?"

Laughing outright, Alle grinned back at Nandeli with positive zeal. "Oh I do hope you are right about the interesting adventures Nandeli the Nose! About the only interesting thing that has happened thus far was being eyed by a young dragonrider while I was at one of those hot springs outside the Weyr proper!" Which, while hardly interesting in the 'let us repeat it' sense, HAD been exciting.... in the wrong way. "He got what was coming to him by the way." She added as an afterthought, grinning a bit to herself at the memory.
"But no, I can't say I have run into F'sey... nor believe about someone eying another woman when they already have a weyrmate." The way her earlier humor soured a bit spoke volumes of Alle's opinion of two timing men....
...at least until she remembered that male names were shortened after Impression.
"Wait, H'dra? A young man?" Her voice was nearly a squeak as the unavoidable facts settled in. Blinking at Nandeli, she couldn't quite believe how easily the girl repeated such a thing! Surely....! But.. hadn't she known homosexual relationships were accepted in the Weyrs? She was positive she must have known, but.... to hear it like this! Unknowingly, the color drained from her face in much the same fashion that it had when Reneneth had looked at her with blood coating her muzzle.
Shards! How wrong was it that that scandalized her less then open talk of two men possibly hooking up! This was ridiculous!

Oooh now wasn't that exciting! Nandeli perked up instantly at the mention of a dragonrider giving Allende the eye. "Do you remember the rider? Or at least what he looked like?" She wasn't entirely sure about how she felt about the rider getting what was coming to him, but she would reserve her judgement once she found out who it was. There were some riders here – she wasn't going to name any names – who flirted with everything, so the fact that one of them had made eyes at Allende was neither here nor there. If had been someone else on the other hand… well, then she would have to explore that deeper. The fact that it was rider made things ten times better since no dragon would refuse to talk to Reneneth. It was a win-win situation.
Tucking those thoughts away in her brain for a little while longer, she focused her attention back on the topic of F'sey and his man brigade. Allende's initial response surprised her – the tone suggested she was unimpressed which was quite suitable – however she seemed to be under the impression that the Weyrlingmaster was two-timing his female weyrmate for another woman. She had just opened her mouth to correct that assumption when Allende seemed to arrive at it all on her own. Excellent! That saved her the trouble of having to explain that guys could be in relationships with each other. Still, now that she got a good look at her, her new Hold friend didn't seem too comfortable with the idea… Oh well.
"Yeah, H'dra. He's a young bluerider. A little older than me I think. I don’t know exactly. But he – F'sey I mean – doesn't have a female weyrmate. Everyone's saying C'ren – he's a greenrider – is his weyrmate, but because both of them have greens they can't fly each other." And by everyone she meant she had been saying and everyone else was following suit, but Allende didn't need to know that. "So they invited H'dra into the mix! So he can fly both of them. Or something. Anyways, I think it's entirely consensual. Did you not have any gay men in your Hold?"
