Anyone who pays any attention to world news or is a fairly active twitterer or youtuber has heard about the Iranian Elections.

A [VERY] brief paraphrase of what's going on is that the old president leader thing is a douche and the one up for election against him is a quazi reformist. Normally not many Iranians vote in elections because it's usually 2 crazy ******** running against each other. But during this election, 85% of eligible voters turned up for the polls. And then about 3 hours after polls closed they decided the douche won with 60some% of the votes. This has been called a FRAUD and basically proven.

So EVERYONE IN TEHRAN IS RALLYING. ********' everyone.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. that's the view from tehran. Just to put things in perspective, the interior ministry apparently was able to count ALL THOSE VOTES in an HOUR.

The best place to follow this event is on twitter. CNN is generally FAILING. BBC is doing pretty well, but since there are about a thousand different factions of it it gets kinda messy to follow. Youtube and Flikr are also pretty helpful, but your main source of news should be iranian twitter accounts.

that link has a list of active iranian twitter accounts.

this has turned into a pretty big deal, and I'm pretty interested in it.

excellent video explaining everything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mqf00InV9E
but really, what you want to know you will find on twitter. :3

Post cause this is amazing and imagining this happening in the United States is really scary. I feel sorry for people in Iran right now.

Whether or not it's good, it's got really provocative photos:

I've heard of it, but end the end it won't really matter, the President has absolutely no power anyway, it's that Grand Ruler religious guy that calls all the shots. I hope that for the sake of the Iranian people, they'll count the votes correctly. Otherwise they'll probably lose all hope in their government.

gonk This information proves that my NPR radio station fails.

All I knew was going on was that the elections were claimed (by opposing parties) to have been rigged.

Oh, wow. Just wow.

lol updates!

iran09
TehranBureau
StopAhmadi
persiankiwi

those are pretty much the valid good 4 iranelection twitter accounts. Don't listen to twitter news unless you hear it from them or have valid reasoning to believe they're valid and truthful and informative iranians, don't tweet any names but iran09, and don't DDOS.

any news you hear from the names I listed is good and valid.

protests are springing up EVERYWHERE. If you're outside the US they're going to be everywhere there's an iranian embassy, in inside the US they're wherever people decide to put them. I know New York and San Fransisco both have planned protests in the next few days.

other than that, just the sheer mass of people making a big deal out of this is making a huge difference. while major news networks and sites are lagging horribly behind twitter/youtube/flickr/facebook, they still have good information that's spreading more massively.

There were 1.5million people in the streets of Tehran yesterday (a day and a half ago, now), and tens to hundreds of thousands in other large Iranian cities.

The death toll is at 7 or 8 confirmed, I think. An estimated 15 or so total. I'm almost certain most of those were students during the Basij raid on Tehran University.

Most of the violence is caused by the Basij. They're the volunteer militia and they've gotten pretty triggerhappy. And property destruction happy. And just generally douchbaghappy.

that's an AMAZING forum about it all. I'll update the first post in a bit with a new picture and morel links.

just know that CNN and other major news broadcasts are downplaying this A LOT. None are saying it WAS rigged, just that it was implied, and they don't even mention the university raids.
