Life around the pride was an easy mold to fall into. All hunting was taken care of by some entirely different lion and now her cubs did not have to rely on her silly berries and odd-tasting plants. It was a nice feeling, and it was both nice and frustrating that she hadn’t yet been able to catch Devon at a good time. He always seemed to be doing something more important, so….it really seemed he was just back to being busy, busy, busy. It was almost like they were back at square one.
Mazin sighed as she pulled herself away from the curled up sleeping forms of her two cubs, and exited the cave into the warm night. Thinking about Devon always got her feeling a bit restless…She didn’t know what to think of him anymore. She loved him, she always would, but to think of some of the things he did while they were separated. How could he?

"For the love of-" There was a groan. The sound of skittering dirt. A thud against the sand. "...I hate this place."

Devon looked over it all. The sand, the plateau, the simple nothingness. He supposed that's what they all were, in the end. One day the whole lot of them, the Sins, they'd be dead and what would change?

Probably nothing. That's what.

The lion stared over the seas of sand and dirt, letting his eyes fall shut. A shudder ran through the dessert, the tiny rocks rippling and rolling over each other to make little waves. Devon turned away, wrinkling his nose. Back home, he had workers for this thing. He had guards to distract Shawnie's wrath. He had opposable thumbs for the gods' sake. And he had...

His steps stopped as his eyes fell upon Mazin, and he couldn't help but wince. Damnit.

As Devon suddenly appeared, obnoxiously at that, to interrupt her thoughts, Mazin felt the fur along her back begin to rise under her jacket. That was until she turned to see who it was, and all the irritation melted away.
Devon...
For a moment she was still, but when she saw the unsatisfying sign that he noticed her; she started towards him. A lot of the things that Devon did nowadays were unsatisfying. He never seemed to do enough. At least not like he used to.
"Good evening, Devon."
She hated that. She hated addressing him so formally. A long time ago when she used to see him; he'd be smiling as he called out to her, and she'd be brimming with happiness as she greeted him affectionately. Saying moments like that were in the past was hard to do, and she didn't want to believe it. In some ways she didn't.
"You're up late."

"...I can't seem to help it, I guess." Devon couldn't look at her without something inside him thrashing violently. He wasn't too much a fan of it. The violent thrashing, that was. It hurt him to know he had hurt her.
His eyes were distant, pressed against the horizon, where the sand met the sky, light yellow against dark blue, and nothing but that.

"...I miss our realm." His words seemed a little lost. He knew he'd changed since he'd gotten here, and he wasn't too fond of it himself. "There was so much... more, you know? It was supposed to be a bad place, but it wasn't. It was beautiful, really. The waterfall, and the garden, and the forests you could get lost in and stay in for hours..."

A little bit of sand rolled over his paws. Something in the way his words left his mouth made it seem almost... dreamy. Wistful. Like reaching for something that wasn't even real.

And this was his attempt to make that dream tangible. He wanted so much to just reach out and grab it, but he knew it wasn't possible. Nothing worth having was as easy as that.

"If I could go back to when times were as easy as that, I would. I would in a heartbeat." He gave a grim smile, shaking his head. His eyes turned towards her. In this place, enchanting eyes seemed so much more real. So much less than they had seemed to be before. Or maybe he was just weighing himself down. "I don't know why I decided to come here. We had it so good, back there. We were so happy." His shook his head, pinning his ears back. "I sure messed up, didn't I. Hm, Mazin?"

There was a pause and he spoke again before giving her the chance to reply. "It seems... it seems like what we had back then was like a dream. Like something that you know happened. Something amazing, then you're just pulled away from it. In a dream, you can alter things with a whim. With the snap of fingers." He frowned. "It's not like that here. We actually... have to work for it a bit." A bit of a charming smile perked onto his features. "I usually hate work. Though... Though I guess I wouldn't mind trying, this time."

Mazin pawed at the ground, her ghostly blue eyes trying to catch if only one glimpse of his eyes meeting hers. She wanted that connection again and the static that rushed between in the moment of meeting. His eyes were focused towards the horizon though, and she tried to move her gaze that way as well but only found herself staring back at him. Deep down there was a fear that ran wild. If only for a moment she looked away then maybe he'd disappear...like he was never there. A dream...
Mazin surpressed a sound of surprise at Devon's word, but found herself truly lost in his words. The Realm....she remembered. Of course, she did. So beautiful, so enchanting...just like his eyes always looked. When he finally turned his gaze to meet hers, Mazin felt something click inside. His eyes, his words, him....everything. They were happy, weren't they? They could still be like that...
She opened her mouth to response, but found no words to say to that. She didn't need any either, because he continued.
"We can still be like that! Can't we? I know we could....it wasn't a dream...it can still be a dream. I know...you messed up, but I did too. I just want to understand, Devon. Why you did those things...why we really can't make this work...." A waterfall of tears seemed to brim in her eyes, and she tried to conceal them away with a sweep of her tailfeathers. It didn't work though, and her voice trembled for a second as she began to continue slowly,"We can do it...We just need these moments. Time to talk, time to be together, and I'm sure you're right....Just a bit more work."
A smile appeared then, a smile that breathed of a dream. It was still there.

"Just a bit more." Devon closed his eyes, letting is hair fall over his face. His head raised to the sky and he took a deep breath of the hot, dry air. He withheld the urge to cough it up and just gave a little sigh, dropping his head a bit.

"Do you remember... Do you remember that cliff-side? Right on the edge of the forest, the ground gave way to the ocean and it cut a sort of... crescent moon, against the water. We watched the sunset there a lot. I guess all of us did, at one point or another. We all had our little spots, remember? We had that cliffside. Kiwa and Ulquiorra had the towers where they could watch the sky. Peris and Isabelle have a hide-away in the southern sector where some nights the moon seems to touch the ground and there's nothing around them but ruins. Tesla and Bekkah had that forest glade where the night time sparkled... Hell, I bet Shawnie and Grimmjow had some place, huh?"

Devon gave a shake of the mane and he looked to her, attempting to make their gazes meet like they used to.

"I guess that's one of my problems. Too held up on a past that I can't bring back." He smiled, leaning towards her and brushing her tears away with a gentle paw. "I can't hope to make things here mirror what he had there. There's no romantic cliff-side where we can watch the sun meet the water. No sparkling forests and well-tended gardens. This..." He motioned to the dessert, trying to give it a sort of surreal look. The sand rippled around him. "This is all I can offer, now. I can't make the past into the present. All I can do is fix our future. And I want to. I want to fix this... It's just hard for me. To let go of that past..." He closed his eyes again. "Especially when it was as great as it was. I just need some reassurance. That our future will be just as promising."

A sunset.
Mazin could close her eyes and picture it perfectly. A vivid image of beauty, life, and...the past. She didn't want to think of it that way, but it was true. Hearing him describe those places made her miss home, their true home back in the Realm, and it made her tired at heart. She wanted to stop remembering. Yet....
Her ghostly blue eyes clashed with his, and she swore she could feel it.
A spark, a glimmer, the static.
There was hope then.
As her tears were swept away, Mazin felt it once again, a light feeling. That was her reassurance, and with fear all but out of her mind; she found herself moving closer to him.
"Devon....I'm here."
With a soft, gentle sigh, she wrapped her tail around him and nuzzled into his shoulder finding happiness in the familiar warmth that met her.
"What other reassurance could you possibly need, hm? We don't need some beautiful landscape, we don't need the past....we just need to be together. If we do that, if we just remember to be together...Then, we can be like that dream."
