The sun was just starting to set behind the trees when Earako jumped out of the cab of her father's truck and made her way down the path toward the nature preserve and the small lake in its center. Though trees clustered thickly along the path there was plenty of open space on the lakeshore, and above the lake itself.
It was on the lakeshore that Vimber waited, the red dragon now much too large to travel via truck with Earako. It wasn't a separation that either of them appreciated, and as soon as the teenage bat broke through the trees the dragon gave a low, approving rumble. The area seemed mostly deserted, and Earako chose to believe that the foul tempered dragon sitting on the shore had nothing to do with the quiet. Really, Vimber was good. Deep down. Maybe. Earako did her best to believe it.
Glancing around to make sure that no one appeared to be watching Earako unrolled the target she'd brought along and pinned it to an impressively large oak that towered over the lake. Today, she'd practice throwing knives from the air. She'd wanted a location where she wasn't completely familiar with the landscape.

With Leah sleeping off a hangover after a long Night Out - she hadn't gotten into specifics about the activities except to say she regretted nothing - Harper and Longwei were left to find their own amusements. It was an absolutely lovely kind of day that could not be wasted reading in the little apartment, so Harper had liberated bus fare from Leah's coin jar and had decided to go out. They had ridden the bus for a while, enduring the curious and open stares of their fellow passengers before getting off at the park stop. The park was full of children, which Harper had no fondness for, so she and Longwei elected to keep going. The park was an offshoot, like a tumorous growth, of a nature preserve. Harper was delighted by this discovery and, climbing up a sturdy pine, launched herself into the air, gliding from treetop to treetop with elated whoops while Longwei patiently followed below.

It was Vimber who first heard the sounds of other's approaching. The red dragon turned her head toward the source of the noise and began to growl low in her throat. Earako, taking heed, and catching the sounds only moments later, landed and allowed the throwing knives she was holding to rest comfortably in her hand.
Her heartbeat fluttered in her throat, even with a huge dragon standing at her side, she knew she was never safe. She'd heard those words often enough from her father, aunt, and cousin. She was never safe. So she stood behind Earako's wing with a knife in her hand and watched the trees through her dark sunglasses, her wings pulled tight against her body.
Yet, when the 'enemy' finally came into view, Earako laughed her soft, breathy laugh, and patted Vimber on the shoulder, scolding in low tones until the dragon stopped talking. A girl. A girl with a dragon, which made her D-corp if Earako's past experiences meant anything. They'd probably even seen each other in the halls.
"Hello." At the best times, the batlings voice was an odd carrying whisper. She smoothed her dress as she spoke, her smile a delicate, nervous expression.

Harper landed gracelessly in a stubby cedar and looked down.
"Heya," she called, head tilted to one side. Chick was a bit overdressed for a day out in the woods, wasn't she? But then again, Harper was dressed in Leah's magnificently elderly hand-me-downs, so she wasn't one to talk. "Whatcha doin' down there?"
Longwei, trotting out of the woods and into the clearing, gave the new girl and far-bigger dragon an uninterested look before heading straight for the nearest patch of sunshine. He curled up like a cat, yawned once, and immediately set to napping.

Vimber, despite Earako's calm words, was not about to sit down and shut up when there was another dragon on her territory. And she tended to define her territory as any area within her line of sight. She continued growling softly until the other dragon settled into sleep. As long as the foreigner wasn't doing anything, Vimber was willing to wait.
"I was going to practice my knife throwing." The pale bat admitted, holding up one of the slender throwing blade's for the other to see. "I'm not very good at doing them from the air, I'm afraid."
"My name is Earako. This is Vimber. What brings you to the forest?"
