As an person in video gaming, movie directing, anime, comic books and so on. This is a subject I seem to be exposed to alot these days. The anime, video games, comic book, even movies have been doing many remakes of characters and each time these companies remake dark skin females. The character ends up being lighter and losing african or black features. If anybody ever played Virtual fighter 4 there is a dark skinned female fighter character called Vanessa. But in virtual fighter 5 she ends up looking pale skin. It even happens to such characters as Ellena in street fighter and hild and urd in Ah my goddess. This seemingly never happens to males as proven by eddie in Tekken and even a fighting game called SNK king of fighters have kept their black males.

This even seems to happen in real life: Many black female actors end up looking very, very light-skinned on magazine covers, while in real life they are darker. I have noticed this with Halle Berry a lot -- depending on what character she is playing or what movie she is in, or which magazine cover she is on, she is varying shades of brown. xd I've noticed this with Queen Latifah, too. (I bring this up because she's on the cover of Essence.)
I've definitely noticed this with video games and comics. Speaking of comics, not only skin tones have been altered, but also features: Storm of the X-Men (easily the best-known black female comic book character), has been drawn with or without "ethnic features" (e.g., broad nose and thick lips), and with light or dark skin. While I'm all for artists getting creative, characters should maintain a certain look to remain recognizable -- Wolverine doesn't always have to be stout, hairy and rough-looking, but he always is. xp

I have noticed this and accepted it as a part of life which is the reason I draw my own characters.

The made her SO light I almost didn't recognize it. I was like "Damn that's a pretty white g-- BEYONCE?!"

I know, right? That's exactly my point. If confronted about it, the makers of the ad would probably claim it was the lighting or the film or something. rolleyes

I actually said the same thing when I saw that L'Oreal ad with Beyonce.
But blaming lights, and film, or anything cant be done. I think it was the creator who blamed the graphic system in Virtual fighter on Vanessa's new change. But in the end said. I love how she came out. So if you deal in graphic or editing design. It only does what you allow it to do. All the editing and stuff you have the final say what it's going to look like. Beyonce and others can complain about the lighter look. But so far no one has really complained about it except the people. I know they had to have heard the complaints by now. But so far nothing.

They do it all the time, and I hate when they say"oh it's the lighting or the new make-up we are using" plu-ease.But the celebrities don't mind it because they are making their money while appealing to the white society as they're meant to do..

It happens all the time. I'm really not surprised. For some stupid reason the world still seems to think that lighter skin is feminine. As for the celebrities, they CHOOSE how they look in the media, so anyone who says it's lighting or make-up is in denial. I remember seeing the cover of a recent Lil' Kim album. She did not even look like herself. She had blue contacts, bleach blonde weave, and her skin was WHITE. I only knew it was her because her name was on the bottom of the picture.

Our parents are probably cringing a bit inside I'm sure. What happen to being Black and proud. This is yet another reason why I like Spike Lee films btw as his is one of the few direction that cast the whole range of skin tones.
Yes I too have notice especially about Storm however has anyone notice that the white characters are getting more Black? Seriously I don't if we have any Catwoman fans but when did her a** get that fat?
It kind of reminds me of a Chicken Soup cartoon strip I read. About how two women one white and one black went to the plastic surgeon so they can switch places. The Black chick wanted to get her lips thinned, her boobs and butt smaller while the white chick wanted the opposite.
It's sad really.

Both Superman and Batman had what they called serials way back in the day only Batman's didn't fare too well because of the budget. Superman's can still be found but those early Bat-man are lost. Plus comic-wise Cat-woman is white save for the movie based ones that they did but of course no one read because the movie sucked. Though it would be a nice change. I'm wondering when they can pull another Nick Fury on someone who's not an a*****e.

I not not as educated on the DCU than Marvel and with Marvel I usually just stick with our favorite web-head and the X-men. Other than that it's all indie comics and Manga. So yeah wouldn't really know the trend.
