I'm surprised more developers have not taken this approach, but it is clear why Valve did: all of their games are on PC. With the PC platform, you have to program games to work given a minimum hardware standard, and since 360 is much closer to a PC than the PS3 architecture, it makes perfect sense.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction that the next Playstation will have a simpler architecture. Multithreaded applications are still fairly rare, so choosing a simpler quad core CPU and a better GPU would probably do them more good.
EDIT: And if I may add, the Core i7 architecture would be a solid choice. Blu-Ray disks are taking a long time to load, and memory performance is one place where the i7s dominate.

I recall many moons ago when the head of Valve said that console makers (in general) screwed up this generation and should take their inventions back to the drawing board. As a future video game programmer I can't really agree with him, but Valve has done so much better with PC games compared to consoles. Now, I'd love to see what they could do with the IR sensing in the Wiimote, but I don't really see that happening, so Valve on PCs is still golden.

Drinky McIrish I honestly think Valve is still sour about Half-Life on the PS2. Speaking of sour, did you hear about all the gamers that weren't as excited about L4D2 as Valve thought they were going to be? LOL @ uprising and boycotts.

LOL @ uprising and boycotts.Well, I too think it's rather stupid to churn out a full blown sequel so close to the original title. It's going to splinter the online communities, and what's worse is that it could have all been included with an update, paid or otherwise.

I'm still not sure about that after reading some stuff on the new director. Randomized levels in addition to random horde attacks? It might be enough. I'm still waiting to see, but it MIGHT be enough.

Personally, I think Valve has been in a bit of a rut. Last ground-breaking game was HL2, IMO. And, that was many moons ago. And, Honestly, if Valve told the console-makers to go back to the drawing board, I will LOL in their face. It's not like Valve's engine is all that spectacular. CryEngine 3 is lightyears ahead of anything Valve is doing. Here's a demo of CryEngine 3 and simultaneous content creation across Ps3, Xbox 360, and PC. Link HereCome on, Valve, man-up. rolleyes
