A Wandering Esper

Beloved Stargazer

PostPosted: Wed Jun 10, 2009 9:27 pm

The blue shapes across the water surface kept on dancing. Every now and then, he seemed to forget that investigating them meant their immediate vanishing and tried to see them more clearly.

The Mist Chaos was testing him. For what reason, the young boy was not quite aware. Surely it could not be for his amazing spell casting abilities... sweatdrop

The park was quiet today - this specific one tended to be at this time of the day, Rou had noticed - so he was dipping his feet in the pond, and teasing the koi inside by wriggling his toes. He was no longer as frantic - time and, mostly, contact with water always tended to calm him - though still every bit as clueless than when he had started, on all fronts.

sweatdrop ...

And as he wanders to the pond, entranced by the water, he might begin to notice a figure patrolling its depths. Shuuka stands in the water, his pants rolled up to his knees as he stands amongst the koi, watching them swim past and then turn, one even nipping testingly at his toes. A bead of sweat slips down the Porcelain's makeup-less cheeks before he bites his lip--

-- and plunges his hands into the water! Instantly a titanic battle ensues, Porcelain pitted against fish! The water splashes, the fish screams (or it would if it had lungs), and Shuuka roars! In seconds, he's launched a koi, slapping and fighting, into the air. His hands scramble to grab it, to subdue it, to defeat the beast.

For his troubles, the youth receives an aquatic backhand via the koi's tail before it goes splashing back into the water and thoroughly drenching its former captor.

#&@! screams the Porcelain, his cry of rage more than a little incomprehensible.

...Well.

It looks like someone might have some issues fishing... And given the way he had attempted, it was no wonder just why.

Rou works himself on his feet, not bothering with his own pants legs as he waddles though the water to meet up with Shuuka.

If this one is looking for dinner, Rou would think that some kind of trout or salmon would be better than koi...

Shuuka snorts, his thumb scratching at the edge of his nose in irritation. Shuuka is not fishing to feed but rather is doing so for training! Shuuka pauses, glancing up to Rou with a raised eyebrow.

Shuuka will be going into the wild soon and will experience many rigors. In order to survive, he must be able to feed himself. It is here that Shuuka trains himself for the upcoming days!

Shuuka huffs slightly, his hands moving to wipe the water from his damp, bare cheeks.

... Of course, it is not working so well thus far.

Ahhhhh, Rou understands now. He does not seem to find anything off with this, none in the least.

Has this one thought about using a net ? It is a much easier way to catch fish, since they are rather slippery - but he assumes the other boy knows of this by now. It is much too hard to try to get a direct grip on one.

Rou knows how to make a net with rope, and could teach him how if he wishes so ?

Shuuka nods slightly at Rou's suggestion before grunting in frustration. Yes, yes, he is right, but Shuuka finds the thought of using a net so very...

... unromantic.

The Porcelain smiles slightly, however, his eyes running along Rou's face. Rou seems to be a master fisherman, however, and Shuuka can't really fight his expert advice. Shuuka glances down to the koi before facing his instructor, hands now on his hips.

Shuuka awaits the master's instruction! Teach him well!

Unromantic (though, Rou thinks to himself, he is not quite sure just how wrestling fish is supposed to be romantic...) but effective. And effective the important part when one is hungry, right ?

Rou has been taught how to fish this way a long time ago - back when he could barely even stand on his own two feet, if he remembers correctly. His father taught him all about it.

Well, Rou doesn't have his new net on him at the moment, but he could try... Hm. Rou wanders off back outside the pond, taking a fallen tree branch and drawing in the sand - a square shape with weights on all four corners and two lengths of rope. That is the net Rou made once he came here, with some rope he found laying around... at least the basic design of it.

Shuuka has probably noticed that fish tend to travel in group, right ? Well, using a net with some weight on the end, you can throw it in the water. With the weights, the net with sink, trapping the fish. And with the long lengths of rope, one can pull the net closed and it (and the fish !) back toward them. It takes a little practice, but works well. If one lucky, they'll catch a few days worth of fish and can smoke or cook it all in one go.

There is also spears, which Rou heard work quite well, and are a bit more obvious in use, but Rou tends to prefer nets.

Shuuka blinks a few times, the fishing techniques washing across his mind. Suddenly, a grin flashes across his face and he instinctively grabs Rou's hand, gripping it tightly.

Shuuka is indeed lucky to have met such a fisherman! Who know that there was such planning involved in fishing? Truly, Shuuka would have been in danger of starving if he had continued as such! Shuuka shakes his head before laughing, his free finger pointing to Rou. Shuuka demands that Rou teach him how to make such a net!

In return, Shuuka will teach Rou how to be his own man, free and unfettered by the world! Shuuka peers at him suddenly--or does he already know such techniques?

Not really planning, just helpful things, really.

And Rou thinks he knows indeed a few things about that, and does not need anything back from Shuuka for the knowledge - but he doesn't mind listening anyway~

And then, Rou's free hand moves the stick to draw another diagram. You take a whole length of rope like this, cut it into equal lengths and make heavy knots every time two parts meet (this is important, Rou stresses, as the net will fall apart when one add the weights if this is not done) then the rocks at each corner and the leftover ropes to be able to pull and close the net.

Did that make any sense... ? If not, then maybe it would be better to find some rope.

Shuuka gives his head a shake, his arms now folding--why give enlightenment when it's already possessed? No, Shuuka will have to think of other things to teach Rou--just give him time!

And then Rou begins his demonstration. Shuuka stares at the diagram, listens, pauses, stares...

... and blinks blankly at Rou. Shuuka's hand rises to his cheek, scratching it before he snorts irritably. Yes, it appears that they will need some rope after all. Shuuka has a grasp of what Rou is saying, but if he expected Shuuka to ever actually make a net?

Well, Rou would be severely disappointed. A rumble suddenly rises from Shuuka's stomach and he glances down to his aching belly while his hands frame the flesh.

And Shuuka would have starved to death.

That's okay ! (the lack of understanding, not the starving to death part. That is definitively NOT okay as far as Rou is concerned) They'll just have to go and find some rope. Rou's got a few coins of this world currency from Master Boyan, so that should probably be enough to get rope and make Shuuka a net !

Then Shuuka will only need to practice using it. Hopefully without traumatizing the koi in the process. rofl

Rou knows some place that sells rope nearby, or if Shuuka prefers to wait for him here... ?
PostPosted: Sat Jun 13, 2009 7:52 pm

Shuuka proceeds to adamantly shake his head, his hand moving to grip Rou's shoulder--Shuuka can not allow him to do that, he is afraid. It would be one thing for them to find scrap, but for Rou to use his own money?

Shuuka will not have it!

Shuuka's other hand rises, balled into a fist as he raises an eyebrow. Before Rou can respond, Shuuka is shaking the fist towards his face. Rou would best not go against Shuuka's wishes, either--Shuuka may already like the fisherman, but he still can kick his a**!

....Erm.... eek

Well, then. Hm. Rou has no idea where to find rope in a decent condition by any other mean - he has arrived in this world not so long ago, Shuuka will have to forgive him for this lack of knowledge, as well as his lack of being able to teach him of other foods in the wild as he does not know for sure which berries and roots are comestible in Gaia, though there is a large number that is the same, of similar enough.

...But that was not the point. Rou seems to have gone of a tengent. sweatdrop

Ah, yes ! Does Shuuka knows where to find scrap rope, then ?
PostPosted: Sat Jun 13, 2009 8:05 pm

Shuuka drops his fist, unable to help but grin at Rou's display of wilderness knowledge. The Sorcerer-to-be watches with interest as Rou goes on his wild but interesting tangent, and when he stops Shuuka can't help but laugh.

Shuuka wishes that he was able to see Rou in his home setting--Shuuka thinks he would be glorious. Living off the land, gaining what food he needed with his wits--truly, Rou, who is not yet physically a man, is a man in spirit.

Of course, at Rou's question, Shuuka pauses, the energy fading from his face as he strokes along his jaw methodically. After several moments of silence, Shuuka finally nods.

Well, there is one place...

Rou has been living this way ever since he could remember, so one could argue he's gotten a head start, perhaps ? At any rate, he is glad to be able to help !

And where would such a place be, Rou wonders ?
