Any other Soquili would've commented on the nice weather the morning brought. The sun shone down from a pleasant blue sky, decorated here and there with white, fluffy clouds. Birds sang joyously from the treetops and butterflies fluttered around the wildflowers. Even the temperature was perfect; not too hot, not too cold.
But Terra wasn't like other Soquili. Underneath her hood she glared at each cotton cloud disdainfully, as if each one had done her some personal wrong. Standing in a clearing of grass not far from the beach, she ground her hooves into the dirt. From there she could see the sparkle of sun off of the ocean.
"23 clouds!" she mumbled in disgust. "Many more and we will have a storm. The last thing we need is more water around here..."

Kaito Aquila was wishing that it would rain right now, actually. Even though he wasn't a Mer-Soquili, he didn't like staying away from water too long. That was why he was lingering near bodies of water, like the ocean he was wandering near.
He loved the beach and the moist air it brought, but the one thing he disliked about it was the sand. It was too dry, and always got stuck in his hooves. That was why he was wishing it would rain, so it would at least be damp and not so grainy. But it wasn't, far from it, and he was grumbling as he made his way towards the nearest place to eat, a patch of grass nearby.
Kaito thought he saw someone, or something, standing in the grass, but he didn't actually know what it was until he got closer. A mare, wearing a red hood and muttering something about needing more water. In a sarcastic way.
"Nonsense! It's been quite dry actually! We could use some more rain around here." He flashed her a smile. She was an attractive mare after all.

The sudden voice made Terra jump. She bounced away about a foot and landed, legs spread out in an odd configuration. Her eyes flicked all over the place before finally setting on Kaito. A stallion with a bandanna on his head, and another one around his neck? He was also blue. Blue like water... How wonderful. And look, a smile. He was trying to be friendly.
Terra frowned. "Who're you?", she asked, a typical reaction from the suspicious mare. Standing up tall again, she tried to look defiant. But it really didn't make the small mare look at all intimidating. "Hah! Dry is good. Dry keeps the ocean under control." Her eyes trailed to the ocean again, and she smirked smugly. "Damn water trying to consume the land."

Kaito was a bit surprised at how he startled the mare, and stepped forward to help her up from the fall. But her expression suggested against that. So instead he cleared his throat a bit like he was making an announcement.
"I'm sorry for scaring you like that. My full name is Kaito Aquila, but you can just call me Kaito. And your name is...?"
He would've stopped there but he could help but want to correct her opinion on water. And he did so, without thinking of what she would think.
"Water is needed to survive though. Everyone needs it, but not everyone needs lots and lots of land. Would you rather have too much of a good thing, or too little?"

"Terra, if you really must know," the mare replied shortly to Kaito's question, ignoring her earlier clumsiness completely. She gave her name to him reluctantly... after all, names could be used against their owners. She could never be to careful around strangers. It was in Terra's nature to be wary, but lately her wariness had turned into paranoia.
She eyed him expectantly, almost daring him to try something. Aquila... that almost sounded like 'aqua'. Had she come across a water lover? In her mind, Kaito's next few sentences confirmed it.
The mare shook her head. "Yes I know, you need water to live and blah blah blah... Land is solid and safe, but water is dangerous when there's too much of it! Look at the rocks near the beach, for example. They were worn away by the ocean. That's what's going to happen to the land if the water keeps rising!" Terra stomped her hoof, thinking of how hard it seemed to get others to see that, and expecting Kaito to be exactly the same. "It's just a matter of time before it floods and washes all the land away." Her hard expression showed how much she believed it would happen.
