I do believe that mary shelly has led me to a miraculous idea! Frankenstein's monster, aside from being reanimated, was theoretically a zombie!
Now if we take this idea in the right light, a zombie invasion in the world of steampunk is wholly possible! Now if put within the proper context, there are endless possibilities upon which to expound this quaint little idea of mine.
so with that said... Too corny?

Oh s**t.I'm already 300% prepared for an impending zombie invasion. I don't want to talk about it any more than I have to.

If I remember the book correctly, Frankenstein actually made his creature from scratch. He built each part from either corpses, or animal parts. Meat and flesh. He basically constructed his own person, rather than reanimate a dead one.
So this would be along the lines of a golem (though those are made from mud), or a homunculus. Given his early influences from alchemists, I wouldn't doubt the latter at all.

Frankenstein crafted his creation from the bodies of the dead, along with the spark of life.He could not comprehend when he was first brought to life, but as time passed he learned. To most beliefs a zombie is a single mind creature animated from a dead body, it has no thoughts or emotions. While, Victor((the creation)) could walk, speak, and show emotion.
And as Xiam said, to a point it was based on the Homunculus concept, from ancient alchemy.Im still trying to order a copy of the "Modern Prometheus"
Im looking into Prometheans, since I bought the books.Frankensteins monster is the last lineage known, and was like said crafted from corpses, and brought to life.It was also done with alchemy, and a special key component the "Divine Fire." I like the concept placed in Prometheans, its simple yet strange.

uhm...actually, it's quite possible.
many steampunk stories go along with the creation of ether, a powerful magi-technology....which could be used to reanimate things
and alot of tesla's technology if twisted in a fantasy way could be used as well.
also it was around the time where fallout was suspected, so...fallout, zombies...dystopian? razz

also, it is reanimating the dead, because frankenstine used decaying and deceased materials ._.
golems can be made out of anything, by the by. not just mud.

There is a table top RPG called "Unhallowed Metropolis" it includes diagrams and scientific pseudo-Victorian scientific descriptions on how the reanimation changes the body to make the zombies more dangerous than just shambling horrors. It's a "dark Neo Victorian" setting rather than steampunk but it allows for a lot of creativity.
