[ +. Ch. I
Fragment: .I.+ ]

Sirens blare into cold steel walls. Pant. pant. pant. "Don't let them get away!" A voice screeches to life in the loud speakers. A pair of white haired children fly down hall after hall, scared out of their minds. What if we don't make it? The red one telepathically tells her blue counterpart. We will, just trust me. The white haired boy smiles weakly. It was hard to think. Their hearts pounded against their chests every time a door swished open. They screeched to a halt when the men with white coats came flooding the hall they were just at a few seconds before. This kept repeating until they finally found something that looked relatively like a exit. "Emergency Shut-Down Activated." A monotoned voice echoes through the halls. The door started to, painfully slowly, conceal itself behind a solid block of steel. Brother, we won't make it in time! The girl's mind screamed as two men armed to the teeth with weaponry blocked their way. Yes...you will! his mind whispered desperately. The two men charged only to find that the boy threw his sister under the door, just as it was sealed shut. Big brother! Her mind screamed in agony. Find someone to help us...I know you can do it. She saw her big brother fall to a smart dart the size of a eraser. Go...now... The boy was stabbed in the heart by a mysterious spear. He reached his hand pleadingly toward his sister, but his hand crumbled to dust by her touch. As did the rest of him. "How funny you Fragments can be." A monotone voice comments coldly. The girl looked up in horror, to see a pale emotionless face. It was the last thing she saw, before joining her brother in the same fate. Two little crystals were all the remained of the two beings. The being picked up the gems in one fluid movement. The scientists stared gaping at this peculiar creature. The girl plucked her spear from the steel floor, turned her heel, and left the frightened humans. "Two down, a few more to harvest." She whispers in the wind.

Sonic rubbed his head, and he tried to sit up. "Ugh..." He sized up where he was. A cheap house, white walls with matching white ceilings. Pictures and paintings lined the walls, but there weren't very many. The bed he was in was a pale yellow color, and incredibly soft. He attempted to get out of bed, but a searing pain erupted in his ankle. He winced in pain. Well, this is new. He thought. He took a glimpse at his ankle, and saw that it was swollen two times it's usual size. That can't be good. Also being colored purple and blue didn't comfort him much either. That really can't be good. "Um...I got you some breakfast..." A shy voice echoed in his ear. He looked up to see a petite human girl, with soft hazel eyes. She was slim, with creamy white skin to match her platinum blonde hair. Probably a college graduate, from her looks at least. "Might want to stay off your right foot for a while..." She whispered. She lifted his leg gently onto a pillow, then placed a bag of cold ice on it. It felt so good. She placed a tray consisting of toast and eggs with the addition of milk on his lap. "Um...hope you like it..." She whispered shyly. Sonic scratched his head. Now...how did my ankle turn out that this? He pondered. Then it hit him. Eggman must've hit his ankle in such a way that twisted it when he fought him yesterday. Or something like that. "Thanks for taking care of me, but I can handle myself." He commented. The human giggled. "Not with that ankle, it's not in very good shape." Sonic pouted. Maybe it's not as bad as she thinks. He tried to step with it again, but only resulted in him cringing in pain. Okay, nevermind. "So, what's your name?" She asked, in her usual shy fashion. "Sonic the hedgehog, your's?." He smiled, proud of his reputation for being a super hero. "Sophie." She whispered. She didn't have any newspapers, radios, or TV's due to the fact she had no money to spend on such things. She had no idea she was talking to the famous hedgehog.
Once Sonic was done with the meal, she took it up quietly and quickly. "So...being on your own is pretty fun isn't it?" Sonic commented. Sophie went silent. "Not like I had a choice...since I was abandoned on the side of the road by my parents a few weeks ago." She whispered. Sonic's ears went low. Smooth move...let's think of something else. "Uh...so these pictures...did you make them?" Sophie nodded slowly. "They aren't much..." She added modestly. Sonic was beginning to like this human, until the door was broken down by a large hammer. "Sonic! I know you are in there!" A pink hedgehog stuck her head in. Seeing Sophie, she smiled sweetly. "You haven't see a blue hedgehog with a twisted ankle have you?" She turned toward the bed, seeing Sonic already taken care of. "Uh...hey Amy..." Sonic smiled sheepishly. I'm screwed.

I know right?
I laughed at the part when Amy beats down Sophie's door. xD

Amy squeeled and embraced Sonic tightly. "Um...excuse..." Sophie tried to interevene, but with no success. "Oh, Sonic! I was so worried about you!" Sonic tried to squirm his way out of Amy's death grip, but to no avail. Amy smacked his face. "Ow! What was that for?" Sonic complained. Amy crossed her arms. "For leaving me of course!" Sophie couldn't help but giggle. Amy turned to her. "And you're the one who's been taking care of my Sonic right?" Sophie nodded shyly. Amy sped from Sonic to Sophie. "Thanks!" But Amy soon froze in mid rant. Sonic had a puzzled look on his face, along with Sophie. "You smell like sunflowers." Amy commented. Sophie blushed. "Um...it's my perfume..." Amy smiled. "I like sunflowers!" A little rabbit squeeled. A two-tailed fox soon followed it, trying to control his laughter. "Darn it, Sonic! You could've sent us a text or something!" A red echidna complained. Sophie moved slowly away to her room, to give Sonic some privacy. Or at least that's what I wanted them to think. Stupid phobia...I wanted so badly to run. Especially since--Her train of thought was interupted by a tug on her skirt. "Missus, where you going?" The little rabbit from earlier asked sweetly. "Um...just giving you guys some privacy." A shout from Sonic gave Sophie the chills. "Come on, Sophie! We don't bite." Knuckles laughed. "Sure we don't--OW!" A smack on the head by a hammer shut him up fast. A blonde head popped from a corner. Amy grabbed her hand before a single word went out of her mouth. "You aren't scared are you? Your hand is shaking." Sophie whispered she wasn't exactly used to visitors. Soon they all started talking to Sonic at once, asking some questions like "How'd you get a twisted ankle?" and "Are you okay?" and that one random question by Cream "Sophie, how'd you find Sonic?" The whole room went silent. Even Sonic didn't know the answer to that. They all turned to the platinum blonde. "Well, how did you find me Sophie? You've been really quiet..." The human blushed. "Um...well...I saw you passed out by the side of the road. I didn't know how...but I managed to take you home with me." She stared at her feet, rubbing them into the tile. Sonic wasn't exactly satisfied with that answer. He still had more questions. But it looked like that was the most they'll ever get out of her, so he kept quiet. A rumble brought them back to reality. Sophie instinctively went to the kitchen without saying a word. She brought out some leftover pasta from last night, and began thawing it in the makeshift microwave. "Sophie, you don't have to make anything. We'll be fine." Amy insisted that she shouldn't have to do a thing. But Sophie wasn't listening any more. Just to the sound of heavy footsteps.

She turned to her shelf, bringing out some sort of present. "I...made this for you when you woke up." It was a blue box, tied with a white ribbon. She laid it in front of Sonic. She then sprinted to the microwave, as a familiar ping sound echoed in her ear. While she tried to set up some sort of lunch, Sonic pulled at the ribbon to open the box. His friends crowded around the mysterious gift, wondering what it was. Sonic placed his hand gingerly inside the box, pulling out a ring-shaped object. It was a wooden bracelet, obviously carved. It looked as though it had golden vines wrapped around the white ring. "It's so pretty! Did Sophie make it?" Amy inquired. A card from Sophie presented itself on the bottom, in delicate hand-writing it said.

'To a little blue breeze I just met,
A small piece of the wind I caught in a net.
Sadly, I will end.
So that her story shall continue.

-- From Fragment'

Sonic and the others froze. "Fragment? Why didn't Sophie put her name?" A knock at the door made them all jump. Sophie gave them plates of pasta to occupy them. She looked through a small whole, realizing her end was soon. "It was nice knowing you Sonic." She slowly opened the door. "Sophie! Wait! What do you mean Fragment?" His words were lost to her. "Something you'll know soon, Sonic." At the door a pale girl stood. "Your fragment I'll take, for her sake." The stranger exclaimed. She took out a long spear, with strange runes encrusted on it. "No!" Sonic shouted. Amy screamed in horror as the spear was driven through Sophie. They sat there wide-eyed as, beginning at her feet, she began to become some sort of silvery dust. Her clothes faded away into nothing as a gust took her being away. Rage engulfed Sonic. He fell to the ground, his ankle bothering him. Not like his heart. "How could you!" He sneered. The girl picked up a strange crystal in the pile of dust left. It glowed a soft blue. "She was nothing. Why do you feel sorrow?" Her expressionless face turned to him. Knuckles threw a jab at the girl, who expertly dodged it without hesitation. "She was Sophie!" He yelled. She said something that made a shiver of fear run down their spines. "No, she wasn't. She was never Sophie." Amy threw her hammer, but missed the girl's chest. A crash of pictures fell, with pieces of glass scattered all over the floor. The girl turned her heel and left out the front door. "You know nothing." She exclaimed. Sonic threw a book at her head. "What is 'fragment'?" The girl stopped in her tracks at the mention of 'Fragment'. "That is Sophie. A fragment." Knuckles seized his chance and punched at her arm. Their faces froze as metal hit the tile. Gears, wiring, cogs, and all. "Your...your not human." Sonic pieced the words in a sentence. The girl turned toward them. "No, I am Freya. Collector of Fragments."

[Thanks for the support!]

Freya turned to the blue hedgehog who laid uncomfortably on the floor. "Lend me your power...Noel." She whispered. A odd clink noise got Amy's attention, as she saw the wires being reconnected to Freya's damaged arm. Gears attached themselves in just the right places, and with a few electrical charges her arm was back in working order, her clothes restitched and made new. "How..." Tails gasped wide-eyed. "The fragment--"
"You mean Sophie." Knuckles growled. "--I just collected gives me the ability to fix myself." Freya said in her monotone voice. "What do you mean 'fragment'? It makes no sense. Is Sophie part of something?" Tails inquired. The android tilted her head. "A fragment...is a part of a human."
