March 109 The sun hadn't even risen completely, yet here he was settled on one of the many stones littering the ground around one of the fort's trees. A slight sigh escaped him rising in a small puff of steam. The snow had melted weeks ago but that didn't mean the mornings weren't still cold. Quite the contrary. At this hour it was freezing. Which for the moment suited him just fine.
Shifting ever so slightly and drawing the coat closer, Alister let his gaze drift to the horizon noting the faint pink tinge. The sun would be up in an hour or so but it wouldn't start to warm up for a few hours yet. Hot or cold though, it didn't exactly matter to him. He was restless, completely and utterly restless. That was how he'd managed to drag Twilight out, after much complaint and whining, to stalk about the perimeter of the fort. Nothing to be seen of course, he'd figured as much though even that bit of work hadn't settled his mind and after an hour of that, Alister had retreated to one of his many hiding spots. There were a few people out and about, none of which bothered him so he didn't pay them any attention. After all, no one questioned why a rider was out before dawn. Well no one but a wolf, but that was a completely different story.
Tilting his head toward Twilight he shifted again before settling against her side, despite the growl and glare. She'd be irritable for a while yet, considering the early hour she'd been forced to awake. Hopefully though there weren't plans of revenge going through the wolf's head because really...at this point in time he wasn't exactly up for a run to avoid getting bitten.
Oh don't worry beloved...I won't chase you now. Revenge is after all best dealt when its least expected, no?
Turning one ear toward her bonded Twilight merely snorted at the wary look cast her way. He was wary, good. Maybe he'd think twice about dragging her away from her warm den next time. Maybe. Not likely though. Even after all this time these random bouts of restless wandering still annoyed her. They shouldn't have but really they still managed to crawl under her fur and have her contemplating ways to keep the human still so she could get a few more hours of precious sleep.
You should be asleep, Alister. One last bid at getting back to her den for a few more hours before the sun rose and the day got too hot for her liking.
'I should be.' A faint consent, even as he tugged the coat closer yet again. Maybe he should have simply grabbed his winter coat and not this lighter one, considering the bite in the air was close enough to the winter chill that had recently passed.
He should have been asleep and that was the problem now wasn't it? Sleep had eluded him for quite a few days now for one reason or the other but this morning it wasn't the usual wariness that had dragged him awake, no he hadn't been asleep to begin with. A sigh from the wolf at his back echoed his own thoughts.
Not being able to sleep utterly, sucked.

Emi walked ever so softly through the trees around the fort. She hopped from stone to stone trying to find a spot that suited her. A flame red wolf followed her. His body always pushing her side to keep her up when she tripped. It had been a while since she had waken up so early just to wander around.
You find a spot yet? Flame frost asked his bonded. He shook himself a bit to get rid of the freezing cold air. He could understand why Emi loved the cold so much.
Emi finally found herself a spot under a tree. It felt just right for her. This place. She sat down on a rock and slid a black case off her back.
Are you gonna play? I though you said it would get really out of tune. Flame asked.
It can but if I'm outside where the temperature isn't all over the place it will be fine. Emi snapped open the case and pulled out a beautiful violin. I never played for you have i? Well you should listen. Emi started to tune the violin. After she was done, she started to play. A soft, sweet, gentle melody flowed from her fingers. The melody flowed all around, reaching far in the silent sky.
FlameFrost listen happily. When he turned his head for a moment, he thought he had seen a blond and crimson head. Shaking his head, he denied what he had seen. He padded to the teenager and laid down at the foot of the rock she sat on. Flame just let the melody sink into him.

Abigail's tired eyes sifted through long stretches of land, hindered by the occasional tree and the endless maze of barracks to either side. Why, in these ungodly hours, HailWing had decided to disappear was beyond her comprehension (as were most things, but this in particular because Hail quite obviously did not want to be found). She couldn't say that it wasn't like that wolf to be unsociable, but the situation at hand was new. In those other times, a disgruntled HailWing would calmly inform Abigail to back the hell off. In this instance, she was gone without a trace and without the slightest warning. Logic said that the female wolf was just in one of her moods and would return sooner or later, but an unhealthy lack thereof said that HailWing was lost somewhere out of range and needed Abigail's help. For that purpose, the tired and quite hung over wolfrider faced the cold air and steadily increasing sunlight of the early morning hours.
After stretching her limbs and a quick retreat back into the barrack to get her leather jacket, she was off on her quest to find HailWing. Company was scarce so early in the morning, which made her uncomfortable, like someone was going to jump out at her. Abigail was never quiet , so something as quiet as the fort in the morning was almost scary. So, as she passed through the training field to the gate, she whistled one of her favorite songs, most of the notes coming out either too sharp or too flat. She put her hands in her pockets and ducked her head into the collar of her jacket. It was a bit colder than she initially thought. Already halfway to her destination, though, she didn't want to go back for anything. It would get warmer as soon as the sun was higher anyway. She probably wouldn't even keep this one on.
As she got closer, a sound caught her ears. An instrument. The sound wasn't unpleasant, but Abigail preferred more of a country twang in her music. Now that she heard it, she was curious. She didn't know of anyone in the fort that could play music. Then again, she didn't pay much attention that. In any given situation, if Abigail was talking to a male, then she was hitting on him. If Abigail was talking to a female, then there was already a feeling of comraderie. Abigail didn't have to know much about a person to be friendly. So long as that person was nice or at least not completely dreadful, Abigail and that person could be friends.
She passed through the gate and followed her ears to the source of the music, all but forgetting why she had initially left. It was a short tumble through rocks and weeds to find it, but it was worth it to see what was there. When she arrived at the source, she looked on with amused curiosity. "Emi, I didn't know you could play the fiddle!" yhe walked closer so that Emi and FlameFrost could see her more clearly. "If you know it, play the Chicken Dance. I love that song!"

A faint yawn escaped Alister and he rolled to one side getting decidedly comfortable with every intention of staying just where he was. He'd finally found a relatively warm, and comfortable spot curled up next to Twilight and the ever elusive thing known as sleep seemed to have finally decided on letting him get it. Now if only he could block out the voices and violin that seemed all to close he'd be perfectly fine. Wait.. Voices...? Violin...? At this hour.
No...no...no. He was simply imagining it. There were no voices, no violins and he had finally found a comfortable spot and was going to get some sleep. Such a plan was wonderful, convenient even but there was one terrible flaw in it. Twilight. The wolf knew he wanted sleep, knew he needed sleep and as much as Alister was hoping for her to have some shred of compassion and allow him this one indulgence, he was seriously beginning to doubt he would get that lucky.
Twilight's tail was swaying, ever so slowly swaying and kicking up just enough air to make Alister uncomfortable once again. Deliberate, evil, vengeful wolf. Groaning as the wolf's tail began to sway more, Alister curled up further turning his head to glare at Twilight.
She was not about to allow him to not only ignore the voices and the violin but also fall asleep out here. If it had been during the summer when the air was much warmer she might have considered leaving him be. But not now, not when it had barely turned to spring and the air still felt like winter. Tail flicking, with every intent and purpose to smack the human, Twilight huffed. She'd be damned before she let her rider curl up out here and catch his death. No matter how much he needed sleep.
Up, up up~ Go back to bed or go socialize because I know you hear people about. Each word was punctuated by a rather sharp nudge of the nose, and Twilight took almost sadistic glee from the sound of her human's groans and mumblings. You've got a choice...up on your own or I will drag you over there.
Seeing the acid glare, Alister sent at her Twilight merely gave a smug bark of laughter as she rose, forcing the human to his feet and after her, as she started off toward where the sounds were coming from with Alister in tow, muttering and complaining much like a sleep deprived pup. Which...he wasn't far from.

FlameFrost raised his head off of his paws when he saw Abigail. After a slight yawn her settled his head back on his paws. He flicked his tail to show his 'Hi'.
Emi sighed and stopped playing. She looked at Abigail for a few seconds before replying. "Morning Abigail. Hail wing go off by herself again?" she asked before looking at her violin. "And no, I don't know the Chicken Dance. I didn't grow up playing the fiddle. I grew up playing the violin." Emi told her Patron. "And just in case you're wondering the difference, I'll tell you. The fiddle is only when you play country songs. Pretty much anything else is the violin." What she was basically saying was that she didn't play country.
So there is a difference. Huh, I wonder where HailWing is. Flame said. He didn't bother to lift his head because he knew it wasn't anything serious.
Emi lifted her violin back onto he shoulder. She was about to start to play when she heard a sound. It sounded like foot steps. She stood up on her rock and looked out. She spotted a wolfrider pair. Not just any either. "Huh? Sergeant Alister and Beta Twilight?" Emi said out loud.

Abigail waved toward FlameFrost, not taking the tail-swooshing to be any sort of communication, but rather not wanting to leave the wolf out of the greeting. Abigail raised an eyebrow. That was a pretty versatile instrument that could change into something else when playing different kinds of music. It gave her the inscentive to pick up and examine the instrument, even play a tune to see what kind of change happened when she did so. It didn't look any different than the ones a couple of her cousins used to play, who she didn't visit often because they lived in the City. Or was it after that, when Abigail actually lived there, when she visited them? Was it more than one? Abigail didn't think much about her past, actually avoided thinking about it to the point that, unintentionally, she'd forgotten a lot of things. Maybe it wasn't a cousin at all. Maybe it was an uncle. In as little as a few seconds, she was lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory. It was only when Emi lifted her fiddle violin again that Abigail remembered that she had something she was supposed to be saying right about now. By this time, of course, she'd completely forgotten the question.
The adult wolfrider was in something of a predicament at this point. The only conclusion she could think of -though she wasn't sure why she bothered thinking about it at all- was to fake it. It was what HailWing would want. Sacrifice all to save your dignity! ...Or somethin' like that. Abigail shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "Uhhh... Ya see... The answer t' that is complicated," Abigail said dumbly and had the sneaking suspicion that it hadn't worked the way she planned. Luckily enough, before Emi had a chance to react to it, two figures were approaching. Emi seemed to recognize them as a Sergeant and a Beta. By some miracle, she remembered her manners and saluted, motioning for Emi to do the same. After all, she didn't want herself or her loveable apprentice to get into trouble. By the time they got close enough for Abigail to see their faces, all thoughts of manners left.
Where do I know him from..? It took a little while to get back into that position where thought was possible. She held her chin with a thumb and forefinger, eyes squinted and crossed. It was fairly recent. The beginning of the month, probably. She remembered because she'd noticed every male there to varying extents, Alister inparticular because of his unusual hair. "That card game," she finally concluded. Abigail looked up, surprised at their new, much closer, proximity. Due to either an inherit comfort in most any situation or a stupidity too great to understand what was going on, she waved to them both. "Alister Shields!" Abigail had forgotten to add the title. She offered her hand to Alister to shake. "Remember me? From the BS game with Calla and all them others?"
Thinking about Calla reminded her of a question that she had been meaning to ask Calla before, but had forgotten because gambling turned out to be too fun to talk about anything else. It was too bad Riya had been there. Otherwise, Abigail would have had much more fun with it. It was strange the way Abigail's mind chose to remember some things and not others. For instance, Alister's attitude during the game or his general disposition, which couldn't have been good. "I know I'm a bit late askin', but did Calla get moved in okay? I helped her some 'cause she was a little bit preggo, but I didn't stay to see if she got done with it. I offered to babysit for y'all too. Can't wait for that little bundle o' joy to pop out, can ya?"
