Maura slowly walked into the flower covered clearing where she had first met Nightwing. He was a dear friend and one she enjoyed the company of more than anyone.
And despite that, she was so very puzzled. She cared for him, but more so than any other in her clan. She came apart when she was with him. Normally she was calm, collected, with a cool demeanor and quick wit. But with him, she was flustered and sweet and honestly felt warm and giggly all over half the time. She dare not ask Rose what that might have meant, quite certain her rookery sister would look into it too far or attempt to meddle more than she already had.

With a soft sigh, she turned away from the flowers and headed instead for a quiet stream she knew of nearby, to wash her hair as she thought. She wasn't much of the swimming type, but washing her hair had always had something of a calming affect on her. Her thoughts would become less frazzled and the ideas too big and she could sort them out to the sound of the water as she gently scrubbed at her hair with her hands.

She came upon the stream, the waters deep enough in the middle for her to submerge completely, though they were not exactly murky as to allow her to hide if she needed to. She slipped into the water, swam into the deeper part so that she could dunk down fully to wet her hair, and then sat on a small underwater ledge where the water only came up to her collarbone when she sat, dangling her legs in deeper waters as she slid her hair over one shoulder and ran her hands over it in light scrubbing motions.
"Oh, Nightwing..." His name came off her tongue in an almost sad whisper, accompanied by a small sigh.

Nightwing was looping through the skies with ease, yet despite his calm demeanor his thoughts were in utter turmoil. He had always had a healthy appreciation for any female in the clan, he couldn't help it. Yet now all his lust seemed to be magnified and focused on only one female. No other, no matter her charm or beauty could hold his interest for even a passing moment. He was constantly comparing every one of the females in the clan to Maura. How could anyone tolerate this type of madness? What was wrong with him that he should think of his dearest friend in such a manner? Finally he saw his lust and desire as the curses they were. His focus on the female worried him, with her he felt so strange and warm as if the sun were scorching his skin before it ever turned to stone.

He drifted down lower on each current and looked around nervously, for in truth he had avoided Maura for fear of what he might say or do in her presence. How would she react if he were bold enough to tell her how he felt for her? What if he dared to share a human style kiss with her, would she be repulsed by such behavior? He let out a frustrated sigh as he landed and folded his wings across his chest. Maura I miss you... He gazed up at the moon and shook his head.

Her hair thoroughly washed, though she admitted she missed the scalp massage Rose would give her (And vice versa) as they would sit and "girl-talk" by the river, Maura leaned back against the rock that had been at her back, her eyes turning towards the moon. In truth she never really had much to say for herself at those times, mostly she listened to her closest friend talk and occasionally comment on her rookery sister's adventures. But this time she had left Rose to her own devices, choosing to have some much needed time alone to think about things that really needed thinking about.

Maura liked to sing, when she was alone. The human who had named her and Rose often would sit with the girls on the edge of the small platform that spanned the front of his tiny house and he would sing to them about great tales of faeries and heroes and love and all sorts of wonderful things. She knew there were sad and bittersweet songs out there, but he had never chose any of those. When Rose asked once, he had told the young gargoyles that there was enough sadness in the world that there wasn't any need to bring more into it by singing a sad song.
Singing reminded her of the human, though she never fancied herself to be very good at it, and it helped to sooth her when she was really troubled. Part of her wished Nightwing was there, because he usually made her forget her troubles, even when her troubles were centered around him. It was as if her brain sort of turned off and everything with him was automatic.

Sighing once more, she closed her eyes and hummed a soft tune. Gradually, it grew from humming to softly singing an old song she had been taught. One of the happy ones. One about love.
She had a dulcet singing voice, and though every so often she would miss a note, she wasn't that bad.

Nightwing turned startled by the soft voice the wind carried towards him, he walked carefully among the flowers picking a few to form a humble bouquet. Slowly he headed towards the deep pond, the wide surface would often reflect the moonlight and pacify his restlessness. Deep down a part of him knew that the voice that drew him was Maura's only she could make his heart race this way.

As he moved past the small clearing and rounded the corner he paused, his heart thudded against his ribs and he sucked in a sharp breath. There she was, the moon glowing over her lavender skin, her hair made dark by the water, and her voice drawing him like a moth to the flames. He shifted from one foot to the other struggling not to rush to her, but oh how he longed to. Slowly he moved up behind her drinking in the sight of her greedily. Did she really get more beautiful each time he saw her or was his memory too poor to maintain the perfect image of her? Perhaps it was a bit of both, he searched for words but none escaped his throat, he could barely manage to breath. No wonder the humans had tales of their men being lured by the voices of seductive siren women, undoubtedly those creatures existed, and they had lent the beauty before him their powers.

Maura frowned after a few minutes of singing.
The hair washing hadn't helped. The singing hadn't helped.
She was still quite perplexed over her friend. She missed seeing him, with an almost tangible ache, missed his voice, his touch. And worse that she didn't understand her need to be with him. She never sought out company. She liked her solitude most times. And yet nearly every evening when she woke from her stone sleep, she hoped to find him that night.

And when she didn't, she returned to her sleep down-hearted.
"I hope he's not avoiding me because of something I did..." she told the backs of her eyelids. She couldn't think of anything she had done that might have been wrong. What if she had? Damn her lack of people skills.

Nightwing swallowed and tried to speak again but still words wouldn't escape him, he moved forward into Maura's view holding the bouquet out for her. He coughed a bit to clear his throat as his heart thudded in his chest.

"M-Maura...I've...missed you" He finally managed to get the words out though they were much softer then usual strong tone. He crouched by the waters edge and couldn't help but drink in the sight of her for a long moment.

Oh, but how would he ever be able to erase her from his mind, or find anyone who equaled her wit and charm, personality and beauty. Still he was certain that any foolish human-like actions on his part would quickly drive her friendship away. If he couldn't have her for himself as ...well at least they could be friends. His heart ached from being away from her for so long, why was he so weak that just the sound of her voice could shatter his resolve and send him back to her?

Maura jumped, startled at his sudden appearance and inwardly chided herself over her musings allowing her to be snuck up upon. What was the matter with her lately??
She tucked her wings more carefully around herself to hide her wet clothing and stood from the water, sliding a wet strand of hair behind her ear.
"I've... How long were you..." She couldn't seem to finish any sentence she started, too focused on the male before her. A soft blush settled on her cheeks as she watched him stare at her. He had a bundle of flowers and yet she couldn't bring herself to reach out and take them. She was too afraid her hand would shake, not that she wasn't trembling a bit as it was, but she hoped it wasn't enough for him to notice.

And then his words really registered in her mind.
He had missed her. She hadn't done anything to drive him away. Had she just been unlucky when she went looking for him? Or perhaps he had been busy doing things for the clan. Either way, the fact that he had missed her made some of her worries ease away.

"I...I heard you singing, you..." He took a deep breath and moved to sit at the edge of the water beside where she was submerged. "you have a beautiful voice. I didn't mean to sneak up on you." He held the flower out for her feeling mildly foolish.

Humans exchanged flowers and trinkets, perhaps he was starting to offend her with all his strange behaviors. He wanted to ask her if she had missed him too, if she thought of him as often as he had thought of her. Did she miss the sound of his voice? Or the scent of his skin? Or the color of his eyes? Or was he the only one with such foolish and random thoughts racing around his mind and distracting him.

He had done his patrols over and over again trying to stay focused yet feeling hollow within. Even when he was surrounded by his rookery brothers or humans at the castle he felt oddly alone. The smallest simplest things reminded him of Maura and the longer he went without seeing her the less he smiled or laughed. What was wrong with him? She was such a good friend, he ached at the thought of loosing her.

"I... I..." Maura tried as she took a step towards him but her voice wasn't working right. I missed you too. You really think I have a beautiful voice? It's fine, I was distracted. All would be good things to say right then, but something was broken between her mind and her mouth. All she could do was look at the flowers, aching to take them and yet completely unable to do so. Her hand twitched, wanting to reach out and take them, but when she tried to raise it from beneath her folded wings, it shook enough that she couldn't bear to raise it for fear he would see.

Say something!! her mind screeched and her lavendar gaze rose to his. She always liked his eyes. The blue marks upon his skin seem to make his eyes even more brighter, as if they always glowed, even when he wasn't angry.

"I... was so sad... that I didn't see you." Perfect, Maura. So many other things she could have said and yet THOSE were the words that came out.

Nightwing slipped into the water and looked down at the flowers suddenly feeling foolish for bringing them. He waded over to her foolishly his body ached to be closer even while his mind warned him that she probably wanted to be left alone. He set the flower aside on the bank trying to forget how reluctant she seemed to take them.

"I didn't mean to make you sad..." His hand lifted of its own accord to brush a strand of her slick hair back. Slowly he draw it back against his chest cursing himself, his fingers ached to touch her, to hug her again. Still he knew better then to try, what if she realized how badly he had missed her, or how his body reacted when she was near. He knew better then to reveal his lust to any female or male, such lack of control was frowned upon by all. His own private curse, and of course it had to be the best friend he had ever had that caused him to loose control.

She couldn't stop herself.
When Nightwing approached her, Maura stood rooted to the spot like a frightened deer. Her heart dropped a bit when he set the flowers aside, feeling horrible for not being able to take them from his offered hand. And then he was there, standing in front of her, reaching out to stroke her hair back. It was a familiar gesture and perhaps it was the familiarity in it that broke her.
Or maybe it was just because he was there, with her, and in range.

Whatever it may have been, she flung herself at him, dropping her wings from her shoulders and wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. She cursed his wings for being between his chest and her own and mentally chided herself for getting him all wet, but she honestly didn't care. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut, clinging to him as if she was afraid he would disappear if she let go.

Nightwing relaxed the instant he felt Maura pressed against him, his arms slipped around her easily and his wings moved to enfold her. Oh how he had missed her, and this moment was perfect, the moon, the water, it could have been any night any weather and so long as she was there it would have been perfect. He nuzzled her cheek and lightly bent to kiss her pulling her up against him.

He slowly pulled away and looked at her startled "I'm sorry..." Oh now he had gone and done it, what was she going to think of him now? He tried to put her back down, to move his wings from around her but his body refused to cooperate and he had to struggle not to pull her closer.

Maura's eyes shot open in surprise as he lifted her slightly, and when he kissed her her world fell apart.
She had seen humans do that before. Sometimes on hands or cheeks, in a polite way. But the lips, those were reserved for pairs, husbands and wives, young men and women who fancied themselves in love. She had never really thought about that before, never paid enough attention. But when Nightwing kissed her, it was as if everything came back together. There were no more worries, no more problems buzzing about her mind like so many bees. No, all that was left was him and his lips kissing her.

And when he pulled back and apologized, a spark ignighted within her and she gained some of her normal fearlessness back. Only with him had she ever been timid and uncertain. She was cool, sure of herself, and never second-guessed her well-thought-out decisions. And as such there was nothing timid or uncertain in the way she frowned at him, her eyes burning. Before he could let her go or do something equally disappointing, she reached up, grabbed his hair, and pulled his lips back to hers.

Nightwing almost flinched when he saw the anger in her eyes and when her hand came up he was certain she was about to slap him, nothing could have surprised him more then to suddenly feel her lips once more. Had she enjoyed the moment as much as he had then? He pulled her closer his claws gently running along her wings and spine as he stayed locked in the kiss. His tail swayed beneath the water helping him keep balance as he held Maura close up against him. Well at least now he could die happy this was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

He moved his hand up to tangle in her hair and pull her closer as his tongue reached out timidly, perhaps this was a bit to human. He chuckled and slowly pulled her back to catch his breath. "I have missed you so much Maura...you...your always in my thoughts...I feel so...empty without you." He took a deep breath.

She sighed softly when he pulled back, so very... giddy from the kiss. He had surprised her near the end, and made her wonder what more he would have done if he hadn't stopped himself.

Maura wasn't really the touchy type, especially not with her rookery brothers and yet she couldn't get enough of Nightwing's touch. Her breathing was a little quick and she could feel her heart pounding faster than normal in her chest as he spoke.

"I can't think straight anymore..." she confessed, giving him an almost wry half-smile. "When you're with me my mind barely works at all, and when you're not, I'm wondering where you are or... or how you feel... about... me." She sort of trailed off on that, her head dipping down so that she was staring at his chest, a blush settling on her features. She kept her arms draped over his shoulders, her tail curled around to wrap around his leg a bit.
