Helios was resting by the water, he had been training hard. His lessons with Kali were intense but at least his strength was increasing. Though he had many scars to show of his training. Kali was harsh and strong and she showed no mercy and so Helios fought with all that he was in hope of getting somewhere with her. He wasn't sure he would ever beat Kali not until he was fully grown at least. He was growing into a huge lion and his mane was well, it was growing thick and fast!
He stood up and washed himself in the water before laying back on the sand. He was tired and his muscles ached. Not that he would moan to anyone but himself. He had been working hard, too hard maybe. He deserved a good rest and a long sleep.

Runya, though still quite a small lioness, was growing in her own way. She was sleeker, destined to be a light and fast creature, but still small and closer to a cub than anything. Still, she was proud of how big she had already gotten, and could only look forward to being older, better, and, though she never admitted it out loud, prettier. She secretly loved the vibrancy of her coat, and doted on keeping it clean.
After spending most of the morning doing just that, she retreated from the den and wandered toward some water that was not too nearby. She knew why she was picking this particularly watering hole, though: it was closer to where she knew Helios was living. It had been a while since their last game, and she was getting restless, being idle. Her siblings didn’t like to play as rough as she did, or if they did she was too aloof to ask them for a game. There was something about fighting, even playfully, with her family that didn’t sit right with her.
Padding closer, she spotted the familiar red lion ahead. Grinning, she sat next to him. Looking down at him without saying anything for a long moment.
“You look tired.”
He had just managed to start dozing, allowing the sun to bathe him as he slept when he heard someone coming. He continued to lay where he was though on the off chance that who ever it was would just ignore him but the familiar scent soon followed by the familiar voice meant he would be getting up.
He opened his eyes and looked up at the all too familiar Runya though she suddenly seemed very small. He rolled onto his stomach and stood up stretching, his still wet mane and fur now full of sand as well. Oh he was clearly the best looking lion around... not. He looked ridiculous!
"You would be tired too if you were apprenticed to Kali. She is ruthless. Anyway when did you shrink?" It really had been a while since they had last seen each other. He had grown more then he had realised.
“I did not shrink,” Runya said defensively, scrunching her nose and looking insulted. She turned her head away, huffing, “you just got stupidly big, is all. And you’re getting your fur all mucky! Don’t you have any pride in how you look? That’s just gross. All that sand is in your mane. If you’re going to grow a mane, you should at least know how to take care of it.”
She shook her head, an effort to hide the teasing grin that almost ruined her chiding attitude.
“So your teacher is beating you up, huh? I guess that’s a good way to learn. Anyone that can beat some sense into you must be the best teacher ever.”
Yes because you could handle a mane.. oh wait you couldn't it's why you don't have them because females fail." He smirked and walked back into the water before rolling in it and washing the sand out again, at least this time when he got out it was only his paws that the sand was sticking to.
"Beating me up? Something like that. And Hey! I never said she was beating sense into me!" He then shook his body, sending water droplets all over the place, including on her hopefully!
“Only an insecure male would say something like that! We don’t need manes because they hide our pretty necks and bodies. You’re just big and chunky, and need it to cover that,” she watched as he cleaned off the sand, relieved at least that he had to decency to do that. It would have bothered her to no end to talk to him when he was looking like a sand monster.
“Hey!” She yelped, lifting her paw and ducking her head as he splashed water all over the place. She got pretty wet, sitting way too close, and looked at him with a bitter, but not angry, glare. “I already took a bath, thank you very much! I don’t need your second hand water all over me!”
She sat down again, licking her paws and using them to brush off the water.
“Typical dumb, thoughtless male!”
Pretty? Uh uh. "You aren't pretty though."
"I thought an extra shower might show me how exactly you are pretty. Shame it didn't. Still ugly I am afraid, must be a curse on ya or something. Unlucky!" He chuckled after he finished talking. It was just too much fun insulting Runya. It was without doubt his number 1 most favourite thing in the world to do!
"Typical? Dumb? Thoughtless? Says she who claims she is pretty... my word at least I am not deluded."
Runya pursed her mouth, squinting at him like she was trying really hard not to explode.
“Yeah, well!” She said tightly, digging her paws in the sand. She didn’t need him to think she was pretty! She knew it was true, and she knew he was just being a stupid boy. Right? “Even if you don’t think I’m pretty, you still have to know that I’m better than you! I did beat you after all. Guess I don’t have to be pretty for that, so that’s fine!”
She grinned at him, feeling a bit more at ease. So he found a nerve of hers? She knew what he didn’t like talking about, “anyway, it’s good that you admit you’re not deluded, and know that everything I’ve said so far is true. At least you’re not a complete liar. Except the pretty thing, but that’s just an opinion, and not fact like the other things.”
"Opinion? No it was fact. As for beating me... I don't think you would have a chance... i mean you are as big as a mouse. I could step on you!" He chuckled. What a stupid thing she was if she thought she even had a chance at beating him now. She was tiny.
"Also you are the deluded one. You aren't pretty. Though your sisters are, you really must be cursed. Shame for you really." He smirked. He had got her and though he didn't think much of her sisters, in fact he didn't like one of them at all! Either way if he could wind her up... oh it was worth it!
“You’re the one that changed size, not me! And I was smaller than you before, and I’m pretty sure that didn’t matter. You lost anyway,” she shook her head, finally free of most of the water. Sighing, she tilted her head at him, arching an eyebrow as she debated challenging him. Chances were good that she’d lose this time, he was a whole lot bigger than he had been. Even so, she had come looking for him in hopes of being able to play.
“My sisters aren’t prettier than I am,” she said, trying not to rise to his goading, though she was having a very difficult time of it, “but my brothers are stronger than you are, so I guess it all evens out. But fine! If you don’t want to risk losing to me again, I guess there’s nothing I can do to convince you. I guess if I told your sister that I beat you, you’d want to fix it… but I’m not a liar, like you are, and I said I wouldn’t tell.”
She frowned, thinking out loud.
“Oh who cares!” she gave up on trying to come up with an excuse for it. She crouched, swinging her tail and grinning at him, “come on, let’s fight!”
"Your brothers pfft. Weaklings if they are anything like you!" He smirked and listened to her rant. His ears pricked as she mentioned his sister but she was too good and it amused him somewhat.
"Prepare to loose" and he pounced. Straight at her. He was heavier now, his muscles had toned a lot. He was still aching but he wasn't worrying about that right now. She would be an easy one to get this time and he was sure it would be over in the matter of seconds!
Crap!
Runya knew she was in a losing battle right from the get go, his size and training clearly out classing her own. Still, she was already having fun, though her expression was serious. She scrambled to get out of the way of his charge, curling around to his side and pouncing at him from that angle. It had worked in the other fight, after all, so why not stick with something with proven success?
She didn’t really care if she lost, though she’s still be bitter. She liked being able to fight with him, verbally and physically, because most of the time her siblings just got ruffled by her picking fights. Or they annoyed her because they weren’t the same kind of challenge that she wanted or expected. At least with him she had fun!
Helios knew her way of fighting now and so he was also able to twist before she could get to him which mean he could use her move on her. This was just too good. He had been taught how to move quickly, where was best to attack and so his mind was in fighter mode. It was the mode his mind went into when he was fighting Kali, though when he was fighting Kali it was a bit more like he was fighting for his life, this was no where near as intense.
She was going to loose and he would love it.
She was going to lose! She knew it already. She wasn’t fast enough, and didn’t have the strength to compensate for it. It would take some training to be able to beat him as he was now, and she had not even begun to do anything of the sort. But after this she would definitely dedicate herself to training, and to becoming a viable rival for him: she was not going to let him live with a victory over her for too long.
She tried to duck him, to bounce away and regroup, but she couldn’t seem to find an opening for it. She was already out of breath and in over her head, and she knew all he had to do was try to pin her and that would be that. It didn’t keep her from pawing at him with all her strength, though, in an effort to at least land a couple of good blows before the end inevitably came.
He was playing with her if anything, he wasn't tired or anything. In fact the whole experience was seriously boosting his confidence! The training was paying off because here he was and he was beating her easily. In fact beating her was easier then hunting right now.
He watched her for a while, dodging her attacks but on the odd occasion getting hit. He was getting bored now though and she was tiring and so he pounced her again. All he needed was to pin her, then be really smug about it. It would be highly amusing without a doubt!
Runya sighed and pretty much gave up, She let out a yelp as he pounced on her, wiggling to get away despite her inner decision to let him win. It wasn’t a charity case, after all: there was just no way she could win. Even so, she was not too fond of the idea and instinct took over. It didn’t matter much, because she couldn’t get out from under him and she knew she was pinned.
“Oh fine, you win!” she growled, looking up at him and squinting. She huffed through her nose, still kicking with her back feet to be let up, “get off me, you big ogre!”
"I don't know... I rather like the view from here." He smirked continuing to hold her down. He then decided he was getting bored so got off her.
“Well that was boring now wasn't it? You need to learn how to fight, seriously! When did you get so bad?" He chuckled. She would have to do some practicing to beat him and that made him smirk. He won and he would continue to win because he was better.
“It’s not my fault I don’t have anyone to train me! I didn’t get bad, you just got better. It’s different when you actually get taught stuff,” she sighed, knowing she didn’t have any great natural skill. Which was depressing, “but I’ll find someone and then I’ll kick your butt next time. We’re even now, though, so I guess that’s okay.”
She grinned at him, getting up and flicking her tail at him.
She liked the idea of not just besting him, but earning it, too. When she trained she would know it was her hard work that got her the victory, and then she would be able to really feel proud of herself. And rub it in his face. For now she’d let him have his win, he’d been working hard anyway, but she would so have her revenge soon enough.
“I’ll find someone though, and then I’ll beat you again. That’s a promise!”
Helios chuckled.
"Of course you will!" He chuckled again and was quite happy to sit down again now. He was mostly dry now so was happy to lay himself in the sand. He did love the feel of sand, it was wonderful.
"So when am I going to see you next then?"
Runya looked thoughtful for a moment, and then resolute.
“Not until I’ve learned something good!” She declared, nodding her head, “that way if we do fight again, I’d be able to hold my own. And show you what I’ve been doing. And it’ll be worth the wait.” She nodded at him, eyes bright and decided. She was not going to let him down by slacking off. She was going to work to the best of her ability, and then kick his butt with all that she had learned. It was the only way to earn the right to be his friend!
She looked around, “I guess I should probably go and start!”
He smirked somewhat unbelieving. If she did it he would without a doubt be impressed but he wouldn't expect much. Then again, she did seem to be pretty set on it.
"We will see. Goodbye Runya."
He then rolled over onto his side to continue his nap.
Runya nodded, grinning as she bounded off.
“See you, Helios! You know, when I’m KICKING YOUR BUTT!” She called back as she ran over a sand dune, exhilarated and ready to make good on her promise, feeling as if she could accomplish everything that afternoon. Of course she knew it would take some time, but it would all be worth it in the end! And she was really looking forward to that.END!
