In early May, PETA erected 265 headstones to commemorate all the horses that have lost their lives on that track in the past year, especially Eight Belles.
You can read the full article, with pictures, here.
If you scroll down to the very bottom of the page, you can read user comments. It can get a little rough down there!
What are your thoughts on this?

I like the idea. It seems a fitting memorial to the horses that have died on the track, and I think it'll be good to raise awareness of how brutal the racing industry can be. (not always, I know some barns are very good to their horses) Everyone went into such an uproar when Eight Belles died. It was tragic, don't get me wrong, but I think it's good that people will begin to see the reality of the racing world, and hopefully that can start to initiate some changes for the better.
But in general, I agree with ESK. PETA... not so much.

Seeing as I fully do NOT support horse racing, I think that PETA is making a powerful statement about the abuse and torture that some horses go through. I like the idea of erecting a memorial.
As for PETA, they have their oddly extreme moments but what they stand for is solid. *member of PETA2*

What has PETA really done to help animals really? (I am actually asking, because I don't know and have NEVER heard of a single rescue organization thanking them for their generous donation)
Have they donated any money to Animal Rescues?
Have they bought acreage to house all the BLM mustangs that they think should get to live free (or for the wolves, or elephants or whatever animal is on their agenda that day)
Have they built any sactuaries?
Have they written and passed any legislature that has benefited animals?
What have the done but draw attention to themselves with radical means, breaking laws, etc.
They may not wear fur, but I guarantee you many of them eat meat and wear or use leather products.
Unless they are willing to put their MONEY where their MOUTHS are they need to shut the he#$ up.

PETA has never helped any animal rescues because they don't believe we should own animals. All domesticated horses, dogs, cats, anything, should be set free to live happily and carefree on their own. Never getting painfully injected with those harmful things like vaccines. Getting to enjoy the thrill of searching for their own food, and never having to be touched by a human hand.
They want us to live off salad and not even look twice at animals.
They have unrealistic views of hunting and fishing, and not even a remote sense of what is reality.

In my opinion, PETA are a bit silly. :/ I think the real problem with racing here is not that they're being run to death, but that they're being ridden too young and being bred purely for speed, not soundness.
