My front bed is now a jungle. There are ferns that come up to my boobies. They're that big. (The ferns, not my boobies. I wish my boobies were big. emo )

Anyways, if you know what this plant is, or could be, please don't leave me in suspense! (Simply "weed" or "not weed" would be sufficient too.)

Quick and easy ones first----

#4----viola, violet, Grandmother called them "Johnny Jump Up"
#6----looks like a poppy
#10---hosta
#11---looks like something in the mint family

Some of this stuff I think I know, but I need some idea how big the plants are----the info is kind of pinballing around up there in my head, kind of like "why did I put vinegar on that spider bite?" Took me a couple of days to make the connection---vinegar takes the sting out of jellyfish stings. And it worked very well on the bite!

Crap. I think I pulled out a few poppies the other day. I stopped when they were easy to pull and I thought to myself that no self respecting weed would come out so easily.

The Johnny Jump Ups are adorable. They were planted by the previous owners and were a very pleasant surprise. :3

I just went out and rubbed #11 and it didn't smell like mint.

Totally appreciate your help. :3 heart

I'm going to go take a picture of the entire bed and circle the plants for you. BRB.

There are lots of plants in the mint family---check for a square stem! Not that I'm always right, it's just a dead giveaway for mints.

And you are very welcome! This is fun for me.

Okay, so not a BRB. Had to have dinner first.

These images are large to give you the idea of how the plant looks and size:

002

I didn't think the front would have that much growth. And, before I knew it, it's a tangle of everything. Since I have never had a flower bed, I don't know what's a weed. Though, I'm not opposed to weeds as long they look nice and don't grow that fast. I couldn't find some plants in the picture to match up with what I've already posted. It's too dark out now to double check (plus I'm afraid because that's were the giraffe beastie hangs out. :O )

Oh, and my poor little Johnny Jumpers. They had to compete with the weeds so they're all tall and lanky.

I'm glad you find this fun! I do too. :3 (And so far, you've been spot on with everything.)

Enjoy your Johnny Jump Ups----if I remember right, Grandmother's would disappear when the hot weather set in, although they were on the east side of the house, and it was very shady there. I just loved them---of course, I was much shorter then, and had a great view!

Looks like a crazy gardener lived there (is that redundant?) and you may have enough plants there for another bed or two! It will be an adventure to identify some of these. What zone are you in there? What direction does the flowerbed face? Maybe someone north of my zone 6 plains location has some of these plants, and knows exactly what they are. I will do my best. No pressure, eh?

I know you're not in the states, but here we have Master Gardeners. You have to take classes and be tested, and after receiving your certification, a certain number of hours of free public service is required before you get your certificate. Maybe there is something like that there? You could probably just take a leaf and your great pictures to a local nursery, and they would have your answers in two seconds!

I'm up in Ottawa, so that's USDA Zone 4. The flower bed faces south. There's lots of smaller gardens, but unfortunately they were left for the weeds the last few years. Just trying to take them back now. It's all been fun except for the amount of nettles I had to take out by the plum tree.

No pressure at all! I am heading into town today and I'll bring some of the plants. Being out in the country doesn't allow for quick access to garden centres with information.

Oh, and more often than not the garden centres are really snobby here and don't give you time of day. That's why I try here first - much friendlier service!

#2 is very difficult to identify because you haven't shown the leaves very well. The flower alone appears to be a rose or an Apache plume.
#5 is shepherd's purse.
#12... I'd really need to see the leaves on that.

Hello! I was thinking the same thing about #2, except that the little green evergreen leaves (if they are the same plant) look like azalea leaves

My thoughts exactly on #12. If the mimosa-type leaves go with the flowers, and the entire plant wants to stick to itself, we had fields full in Oklahoma when I was a kid---if not, ???

Well I went to a garden centre but was far too intimated to ask for help. Going to my usual friendly place tomorrow with cuttings.

And this one is some sort of vine. It has some grass and a fern in a choke hold:

Hey, Pirhan! (and everyone),

I've been trying to remember this place! Go there!

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/

I think it's the largest plant identification database there is!!

I'm going to bo running around like a crazy person this weekend, so I won't be much help for a few days, and you'll probably have it all figured out by then. #12 is not the same thing we had, whatever it was., but I have seen it somewhere, and the one that I thought could be in the mint family could also be a hydrangea of some kind-----???

I have a hard time getting out of Dave's Garden, one plant leads to another and, before I know it, hours have passed. Beware of white rabbits and tea party invitations----- biggrin

#2 looks like a wild rose. I have them in my backyard.
#3 might be some form of Queen Anne's Lace. the flowerbuds look immature so it's hard to tell.

Ugh, so I still haven't made it to my regular garden centre to get some help on these. I think I'm just going to get a landscaper in for a bit to help me identify what I have and give me some tips. (The back, by the river is being overrun by cucumber vine.)

Oh, and I just found out that the $20 plant I bought earlier this year grows wild, and very well, in the yard. I've got a ton of them now. (And it's good because they smell nice.)
