I came up with kind of an interesting concept for an OCT recently, and I thought I'd run it by all you guys before I throw the idea out to DeviantArt (if I do at all). It's not entirely worked out, and there are plenty of problems, but I want to know if it's a good idea or not.
I always found it kind of fun when round winners in traditional OCTs let their previous opponents tag along and even help them win their later battles (Dood Palette is a great example of this), so I was beginning to wonder if this could be taken even further:
The tentative name I have for this is "Team Players". The basic idea is that everyone who participates in this tournament can form video game-like parties made up of themselves and characters they've defeated in battle (assuming that the creators/characters wish to join, of course), and employ the assistance of their new allies in battles against other parties. I might have to put a limit on the number of characters in each battle so it doesn't get out of hand, but I haven't worked that out yet. Like I said, this idea's in its early stages.
And it might be even more fun if ALL the creators of the characters in a party pitch into the story, so we have a collaborative effort, with contributions from all the artists in the party.
Okay, example time. We'll use some of our more well-known characters, since I'm terribly lazy:
Let's say hypothetically that Spoiler defeats Cyril the Wizard in the first round, and Cyril joins Spoiler to take on the Round 2 opponents, who happen to be, say, Climber and his previous opponent... Ree? We'll say Ree, just because it's kind of funny.
So you have a melee fighter and a magic-user on one side, and another melee fighter and a demonic summoner on the other. And if Zeurel and Craig are working together on the plot, you get Zeu's epic artworks and Cyril's sidesplitting humor. And the thought of Unknown and Endling working together on a story.... I tremble in awe at the very thought.
Now let's say that Ree and Climber defeat Spoiler and Cyril. Zeurel and Craig now have the opportunity to join Unknown and Endling as party members. If they do, then they can continue to actively participate in the tournament, and even contribute story ideas to Unknown, who would be the party leader. If one or both of them decide not to join, they drop out of the fighting, but they can continue to submit spectator entries, just like in a regular tournament.
The really great thing about all this, of course, is that your favorite artists don't disappear too early, and you get to see them in action longer. No more unlucky round one matchups!
That's the basic gist of things, at any rate. What do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea? And most importantly, would you consider joining such a tournament were it to exist?
And for heaven's sake if you see any flaws in my reasoning TELL ME!

This. . . sounds so incredibly epic. Even I'd be hard-pressed not to at least try for this OCT, however sucky and undeveloped my talents may be. :0
KARL AND MR. I ON A TEAM!! *Fangasm*
That is all. xD

That is all. xD Aaaaand therein lies this concept's foremost flaw. This OCT is no good to any character who won't join a group. The entire premise depends on characters being able to work together as a team. And seriously- it's unthinkable to have Karl in a team of any kind. The guy is chaotic evil incarnate, and he won't make deals with anyone. So he'd be fighting an uphill battle all the way. Although I'm very glad you like the idea!

Hahah, yeah, I know. . .
I just think it'd be cool. And if Karl DID feel like joining a group, it'd only be to stab them in the back at the finish line.

Another thought-
What if I were to require teams of two from the very start, so that the party member thing can be used from the get-go? This way, we halve the contestants to 32 (I think that's right?) as opposed to 64.
And on that thought, the number of rounds could be reduced to four instead of the usual five. Then I could give the contestants a full month (or perhaps more) to spend on each round, so they can get the input from everyone in their party to make up the best story they can.

Ooh, that'd be cool.
Like, they get paired up by picking names from a hat or something. :0

Actually, that's a pretty good idea. I was thinking of having them choose their own members, but if we assign the beginning parties, we might have some interesting situations. I'll have to think that one over. Don't want to take the fun out of it by having too many rules.

Currently brainstorming this idea further with Faulty Ambition, who goes by the name eviltwinears on DeviantArt. He says he'll pose the idea to a few people he knows, to get their opinions.
Oh, and if you haven't already, please vote! It's important I get feedback of some sort!
