The big male paced back and forth in front the shallow den. His feet were sore from days of travel, looking for a safe place, such as this, but he could not sit still. The love of his life labored in the den, working to bring their children forth into this world.
The golden wolf knew that these babies may not be of him, but they were still his. Anything that was Nymmeria's was his. The moment he had discovered she was expecting, he had vowed to himself that it wouldn't change anything. In fact, this would only make things better. He'd always wanted a real family of his own, and now he was set to get it.
His pacing continued, he was beginning to wear a path into the leafy underbrush, marking this place as his own.
---
She was growing weary of the pain and effort. For days, they had walked, looking for a den. She felt guilty. Aurum would do anything for her, and he'd lead her to this place, so she could birth puppies that weren't even his. She shook her head, panting hard. This had to be over soon.
---
It had been hours. The sun had set and the stars sparkled in the sky. Nymmeria could hardly keep her eyes open, but at the same time she couldn't tear them away from her babies, from her very life. At her side five little bundles of fur were snuggled. She touched each of them gently with her nose, licking them here of there, laying their fur flat once more. Each was a miracle. She didn't know one could feel so much love.
"Aurum, you can come in now ..."
Her mate emerged, and expression of shock and joy on his face as he took the babies in.
"They are Rihanna, Kaleidoscope, Nani, Tacitus and Mardi. And they are all perfect. "
He nodded and lay down beside her, equally transfixed with this new life. Together, for the first time, the family slept.
---
Weeks had passed in a happy blur for her. Her babies had all grown strong and were no longer deaf or blind. This was their first evening that they would spend outdoors together. She was thrilled at the prospect.
Rihanna was nestled in the opening of the den, her nose just on the outside, sniffing at the night air, waiting for her first chance to go out and frolic in it. She watched her mother. Eventually she nodded to her. Bounding out of the den, Rihanna was the first one out of the den, looking after her to see which siblings would follow.

Kale watched as her sister bounded out of the den and rolled his eyes at her rushing, puffing out his chest he walked - sedately- out of the den. Kale very rarely rushed anywhere, you missed important details that way.
Like the way the darkness of the den melded with the slightly lighter moon lighted darkness of the night, or the strangely striped rock his sister's mad rush had uncovered at the entrance. Pausing for a moment Kale hunkered down to look at the patterns for a few moments before carefully pushing the rock to the side so that he could look it over more carefully in the daylight. just to be safe he kicked a few leaves over it - can't have it getting lost or something.
Glancing behind him he lolled his tongue out before trotting the rest of the way out of the den, glancing about with bright curiosity.

"Get out of the way, Kale. Coming through!" Mardi bounded out into the night just barely missing colliding into her brother as she brushed the leaves covering his rock. She couldn't wait to get outside and see all the things that were there to explore. During the weeks she spent in the den she found herself fascinated with the different scents that mom and dad carried on their coats whenever they would return from the outside and now she just had to find out where those smells came from.
She pranced towards Nymmeria with her little tail wagging proudly and gave a playful bark. Everything was so new and exciting she simply didn't know where to start then a sweet scented night blooming flower caught her attention. With her focus on the swaying flower head, Mardi didn't notice the large bird in the tree until it's hooting call echoed over head sending the dark green pup racing to safety between her father's feet. Maybe it would be best to wait until everyone was outside so they could explore together. Peering from behind her daddy's legs she watched for Tac and Nani to come out and join in the family fun.

Tacitus was silent, despite how he opened his mouth or tried to vocalize no words came out. When he tried hard he managed some small grunting sounds, but he was tired of trying. His blue eyes glanced around with open curiosity and happily he trotted after Rihanna beside his brother Kale. He jerked aside startled as his sister flew past and then relaxed and grinned at her excitement.
He glanced back once at his parents for reassurance before bounding out and inhaling the strange new scents. How vivid everything was! His eyes squinted as they adjusted slowly to the bright sunlight that filtered down on the pups. He lifted his nose to smell the air above him, lowered it to smell the earth below him, and then he began to follow it first to a twig then a leaf and a patch of grass! It was all so new and overwhelming!
He grinned and twirled around and around trying to express his excitement and joy, what a beautiful place the world was! He stopped as he felt his tail tickle the tip of his nose and sneezed.

xxxThis is going to be an interesting night, Nani thought. Her siblings had all made their way outside by the time this pup had even made it close to the exit. She was nervous about stepping out for the first time. Nani knew nothing bad could happen, but it would mean change. xxxIt meant that the world out there would be open to her and her siblings. It would no longer be a mystery or only what they were told. The grass and the sky would suddenly become so solid, so real. xxxTaking a deep breath, though, Nani walked her body out the den and into the fresh air. When she next inhaled all the scents from the new world came rushing to greet her. It was almost too much for her to handle. But she pushed through the urge to sneeze and made her way closer to her family.
