Part I - Rehearsal
Nico knew that he was not the best with words alone, so atop each scene description scrawled on neat construction paper was an illustration. These piles of paper were what he was now handing out to his family, the quality of them decreasing with each "copy" he had drawn.
"Okay, so, so it's called 'Adventure Time'," he explained and stopped there. Nadia arched her brow at the colorful hair her character had been given.

Dax sighed and rubbed his brow. Parenting was an odd job.
"Well, that sounds nice."

"Thanks!" Nico chirped. He would have much preferred a troupe of professionals to perform his brilliant work of art, but all he had at his disposal was his family and an old costume trunk. It would simply have to do.
"So, so, I'm the narrator, and I'll read things as we go, so you'll know what you're doing!"
"So who's the brave knight?" Nadia asked.
"...Benji," Nico replied, as if this were a ridiculous question. The infant flailed and burbled at the sound of his name, giving his mother a good kick in the chin.

Dax nodded, tickling Benji's foot. "That sounds like a good choice for a knight." He said seriously. at least Nico was enjoying himself.

Benji laughed and blew a bubble. Well then. Apparently he was having fun too.
"So the brave knight has to go save the fairy princess from the dragon and makes friends with a magic frog who helps him find his way."
Nadia eyed the drawing of the dragon. It had pink dreads.
"So I'm the dragon?"
"Yep!"
"Awesome."

Dax smiled. Such an imaginative child.
"So who am I?"
... And such an unimaginative Dax.

Nico beamed at Dax, proud of his brilliant typecasting.
"You're the fairy princess!"
Nadia snorted, trying to hold back what was undoubtedly hysterical laughter.

Dax gave a strange sort of snort, one eye staring at Nico. What.
"Er, you don't think Mommy would make a better fairy princess than ol' Dax?"

...Sigh. Of course Mommy was the dragon. How silly of large Dax.
"All right, buddy." Such a pushover. Dax would be the best fairy princess ever. How many did you see with perpetual 5'oclock shadows?

Nico read through his story once to give the family an idea of what was going to happen, and then it was time to try on costumes. Pickles luckily had already received a frog costume, and Nadia had been a giant dragon 3 years ago. Benji, however, was doomed into one of Nico's huge dressup costumes, and Dax?
Well, Nico was holding out an old taffeta Renaissance gown with tiny fairy wings.

Dax sighed and took the dress.
"You think I'll fit?"
He loved this little boy. He loved him dearly. He was willing to wear a horrible outfit and make a fool of himself if it would make him smile.

"We can try?" Nico 'said', looking rather hopeful. Nadia helped Dax step in, and tried to close it around his broad shoulders. It simply wasn't happening. She kissed her man between the shoulder blades and then waved for Nico to come see.
"So it doesn't fit?"
"I guess not, but I could probably dye a shirt pink to hide it?"
"Hide what?"
"The big patch of blue skin."
"Oh, okay."
And Nico seemed happy with the arrangement.

Dax just sighed. Luckily for Nico Nadia could do things like that!
"Well, buddy. Looks like you got your cast."

Part II - The Play
Chairs from the dining room and basement had been set up in the front yard of the Miller home, sitting behind a row of blankets. Visitors could sit where ever they wanted, as indicated by a sign that read "COME AND WATCH MY PLAY ratid PG for dragon violenc". A few random neighbors and Nadia's younger sister had arrived to watch, scattered among the chairs before the strapped-together crates that acted as their stage. Nadia had hung a plastic palm tree cutout from a tree along with 2 sheets to act as curtains on either side. There was an inflatable castle sitting offstage for later use. Nico sat in a tall Director's chair, illustrated script in hand and a rather rumbly sheet-covered cage beneath him.
"PLEASE TAKE YOUR SEATS LADIES AND GENTLEMENS. THE SHOW IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!" he announced happily. Nadia just arched a brow at Dax from across the wings. Oh, you poor man. She was so lucky.
