Vera stretched lazily out on the banks of crater lake. The sun hit her belly and she smiled. It was one of those days that you had no cares in the world and life could be enjoyed to its fullest. She had no real plans, maybe catch some fish or meet some new painters, but nothing all too serious. She chuckled to herself and closed her eyes.

The sun warmed the sands around crater lake. Kodiak was biding his time watching the humans going about their daily lives. Bored with reading his books on magic, the toasty brown painter had come to the human habitation by the lake to see if any humans needed help.
Movement out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. Kodiak turned to see a mahogany brown female lounging by the lake, enjoying the sun.

Vera panted a little getting a bit overheated by the sun's hot rays. She sat up and tried to send turrents of wind around herself using her wings as giant fans.It provided some relief from the heat but it stopped as soon as she stopped fanning. She grumbled slightly and decided on a more perminant solution. Winding herself up she cannon balled into the lake sending a large wave of water in every direction. Feeling much better she surfaced to see a male tan painter who had inadvertently become a soggy victim of her rather large splash. "Excuse me, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get you wet," she said firmly but apologetically. She was always polite but she maintained maintained her alpha temperment at all times.

Kodiak watched the female painter rise and start fanning her wings. He didn’t recall seeing her before. He was sure she wasn’t new to the area, but it piqued his curiosity as to why he’d never noticed her before. Before Kodiak could make a move, the dark brown painter dived into the lake sending leaping waves of water everywhere. One minute Kodiak was sitting in the hot sun, the next minute was he was drenched in lake water. He sat in shock for a moment, then realized the cool water felt rather good. He hadn’t realized how baked he’d felt until a breeze wafted by cooling him even more.
"Excuse me, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get you wet."
“Not a problem,” replied Kodiak cordially. “In fact, it’s a very good idea.” Ever mindful of the humans around the lake, Kodiak chose not to shower them all with another wave of water. Instead, he waded into the lake to float near the dark brown painter.
“And who do I thank for this grand idea of cooling off in the lake?”

"I am Vera," she said with a large smile, "I don't believe I've ever seen you around here before. I spend most of my time up at the lake, are you from another part of the island." She paddled around in the water every once in awhile poking her snout in to catch a fish. Though often times missing since her focus wasn't really on fishing at the moment. "This water sure feels nice. I was starting to really overheat."

"I'm Kodiak," he replied with a little bow of his head. As best he could manage anyway, while bobbing in the water. "I usually spend most of my time in the canyon." The sand colored painter smiled at the dark brown painter's fishing attempts. When her head surfaced above the water, he added, "The water is definitely colder up here in the crater lake. Much better for cooling off than below in the canyon waters."

She gave a lopsided smile and examined him. He had a lean build and an attractive face. Although it was not something she normally did she gave him a flirtasious look. "I am Vera," she said. She paddled around gently. "So what do you mostly do in the canyon?" she asked letting her green eyes flash.

Kodiak noticed how the water slid over her muscled hide when she rose from the water. He was about to answer her question with a dull recital of his daily routine when a sparkle in her green eyes caught his attention. Was she flirting with him? How could he normally be so observant and have missed that? He’d been thinking that this visit to the crater was going to be a wasted trip, but now… maybe not.
"I… study things," he replied.

"Study things? That's very descriptive. Would you like to give me a for instance?" she said sweetly but with a hint of sarcasm. She slowly waded out of the lake and onto the rocky shore. She sat like a phinx and spread her wings so they would dry in the sun.

Ok, so flirting wasn't something he'd ever been very good at, he thought. But at least she hadn't left completely.
"Well... lately, I've been studying the different elements," he replied while continuing to bob around in the water.

She could tell he was uncomfortable. She decided to take a different more gentle approach. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make things awkward for you," she said as she furled her wings. "Interesting thing to study, I must say. What is your favorite element?" She lowered her head and gave him a sweet smile. She laid down and rested her chin between her front paws. She wiggled her toes into the sandy bank.

"I haven't decided on a favorite yet, but I'm finding the water magic element rather interesting." Kodiak smiled back her, her interest encouraging him. He climbed out of the water and sat near her. He let the water drip off of his back and wings, rather than shaking it off, so he wouldn't get the dark brown painter wet again after she'd already dried off. "Water magic can touch the soul and reveal it's aura."

"Sound like just what I'm interested in," she said, "personal spiritual cleansing. Except what I tend to do in terms of that work on stuff on less of a magical level. I work with the here and now. With less supernatural powers. It's like what Gandhi says 'Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.'" Vera noticed how he politely made sure not to drip on her.
