You may have come across some of the old tv shows or cartoons of a fortuneteller looking into a clear ball, and the images appear in the ball itself. That's not how it works.
You won't get any kind of reading with a clear ball. It may be leaded crystal, or glass. What you need is genuine crystal, and the more lines running through it, the better. What I mean is, the best to use is clear quartz, as it has web-like veins going through it. Other example gemstones that are good for this type of divination are amethyst, rose quartz, malachite, aventurine, mangano calcite (milky pink with white veins), and sodalite. There are others out there that have veins, specks, and lines, in many colors.
Colors can be specifically used, as in the candle magic - for example, pink-colored gemstone balls (rose quartz, mangano calcite) can be for love, and green (aventurine, malachite) for money, prosperity, and abundance.
A small crystal ball can work as well as a big one, so don't think you'd need to go out and buy a huge ball for $400, when you can get a smaller one for much less than that.
You need to see which crystal ball will work for you. When you shop for one, see if you can hold a few (one at a time) in your power hand - if one tingles, if it seems to call out to you, then that's the one for you. I actually have about seven of them, the examples I gave are most of what I have. You don't need to have that many, a clear quartz can serve for an all-purpose reading.
It is important to take proper care of a crystal ball, especially if you are going to be using it a lot. Don't keep it in the open and have other people pick it up and play with it, as you don't want other energies on it, especially if you are going to have it for your own personal use. You can keep your crystal ball in a pouch that it'll fit in, with a sprinkle of mugwort to help cleanse it, along with enhancing the power of the readings. You can keep the crystal ball, in its pouch, in a special box for it.
To cleanse a ball, which is important to do before any reading, depending on the gemstone, you can wash it with sea salt and water (if it is a gem stone that can be harmed with sea salt, do NOT use it), smudging with sage, or send positive energy to it.

As mentioned, at first, ONLY YOU handle your crystal ball. Empower it with your energy, hold it in your hands, keep it near you. Concentrate on it.
When you have had enough practice with it, you can have others hold it only when they want a reading. But, do readings one at a time, and cleanse the crystal after each reading, so you don't pollute the energies and confuse things - you may get something from another person when reading for someone else, if it's not cleansed after the first.
To have clearer readings, first find a way to develop your vision skills - I suppose that means meditate, and find a book on symbols (there's one in my book list by Ray Buckland).
It's better to read the ball in a quiet, dimly-lit room, lit by candles (but not that many, you don't want to include the candles' flames in your scrying). Do a bit of a breathing exercise, like a small meditation. If it helps, play some new age, celtic, classical, any type of calming music, but at a low volume. If you want to, call in the God or Goddess, some spirit guides, or totems to help you with the reading. Keep your eyes unfocused.
For the crystal balls with the lines in them, such as clear quartz, follow one line, see where it leads to. For those that are smooth and have no clear lines to follow, like hematite, try to concentrate on any indentations or crevices the crystal may have.
Let it take you on a journey - the journey along that line can lead to other lines, but try to follow one line at a time. Visions or symbols may pop up in your mind (not inside the crystal). Don't doubt that you won't see anything.
Keep a journal when you receive visions and symbols from your crystal. It may some time to memorize what symbols mean, so it is best to write down what you saw, and look it up in a book of symbols or dream interpretations.

I just recently obtained my first crystal ball, it was from a friend of my family's. The ball would not work for any of them, Last weekend i was at there house and she brought it out and we were trying to get readings from it, Well to try to see anything. After awile i keept seeing things mostly faces i was told they were reflections of the things that were clinging on my aura. I just learned how to well clense im sorta new and it was the things clinging on me showing themselves. After awile we had to go pick up the little sister and her bus was 2 hours late as we were gone the ball basicly turned itself to led the wight anyway and those still at the house could not lift it without useing both hands and fighting it when i got back i picked it up useing 3 fingers and it felt like air ... i was told it liked me so now its here im learning how to use it cuse i have not meny ideas how but if i could have any advise?
