Last night we had to run Shelby up to the vet b/c she was acting colicy. She wasn't herself Thur night but she had sounds, was eating, wasn't over stressed (sweating, thrashing), she was laying down more than I like to see though & she had diareah. I gave her oral banamine and she perked up a bit. I watched her all Fri AM and she was eating grass, ate her feed. I went to turn her out with her herd and she laid down, groaning - the most horrible sound on this planet b/c you know the horse is in pain. I gave her a shot of banamine and not much changed. Of course, I had to go to work (at my *real* job) so I had a neighbor come over and she watched her until Amber came home from school. Around 8pm Amber called to say Shelby was throwing herself on the ground so I rushed home and we loaded her up. The vet met us at his office. He palpated her, took her temp, looked at her gums. She had sand colic but we caught it in time.
http://www.earthworkshorsehealth.com/psyllium.htmlThe vet recomended wetting the psyllium only to prevent choke. Your horse will not expand and "blow up" from eating dry psyllium.
wink We usually go to Wal-Mart and buy the Great Value brand of Metamucil and dose 1 cup per day for 7 days, every month. Things just kind of got away from me and it was a hard lesson to learn. I dunno what Amber would do w/o Shelby.
She seems to be doing okay. Ears up, eyes bright, not chasing the young stock around too bad. Dr. suggests Sand Clear N-O-T Sand Blast (Bran does nothing to get rid of sand). Of course, we're going to Wal-Mart to stock up on the Metamucil (much cheaper than Sand Clear) and I'll be dosing everyone over the next 7 days.
