This is a private roleplay between Apotropaics' Kazan and Huroggmeten's Sadiki. It shall cover the time between when Sadiki realizes she's pregnant to the arrival of baskets. Please do not post without permission. 3

Kazan smiled softly, resting his cheek against Sadiki's quivering form. He waited as her shivers subsided, gently caressing her silken coat with all the patience one could muster.
"It's alright, sweetheart..." he murmured, his deep voice rumbling softly in the cavern's walls "... i'm not mad. I'm not upset." he whispered, staring deep into her forlorn lavender eyes. "You have done nothing wrong."
Quite the opposite.
He could not suppress the giddy grin as he thought of what was to come.
Children. His children. Her children.
Their blood, fused, made one. Come to life in miniature versions of themselves, kindred souls, in mind and body alike- yet separate, whole, new.
Life!
They had created life!
His smile softened as he soothed her with nonsensical endearments and murmured promises.
Oh, it would be tough. The road would be long indeed. How to raise a new mind, a new soul? How to teach, to show, to love? How to discipline, and coddle, at the same time? How to... and What? What of bruises? Cuts? Scrapes? Could he stand the sight of his own child's blood, as he could not stand the sight of their mother's?
How many?
When?
Who? Who would his children be? Would they take after their mother- shining, brilliant, pure, yet tainted by the world- he must protect them from the taint!- or after their father? Or would they turn out like their crazed, sadistic grandfather? Would blood prove stronger than a loving, cherishing environment?
He nuzzled her fondly.
"Don't worry, my love. We'll get through this... together."
Who was he trying to convince now?

Sadiki trembled, leaning on him shamelessly.
She needed his support now- perhaps more than she ever had.
She had felt it- had felt the life kindles within her womb, had felt her ribcage expanding to accommodate their growing forms, had felt the thrill of panic and resignation when she had realized that she was... pregnant.
Pregnant! Her. Sadiki. Pregnant.
She had never thought this day would come... oh, when she was young and flighty, she had often dreamed of being a mother. Before that crimson stallion had broken her heart.... before this benevolent crimson-eyed stallion had tenderly put the pieces back together.
She was so fragile. Still- even after these many moons- so fragile.
She didn't know if she could handle it. Her breath caught in her throat as she fought to suppress the rising panic. A mother! She could barely care for herself!
With a broken cry, she sobbed into his shoulder, her strangled gasps muffled by his solid, muscular frame.
"I hope so... I hope so."

"I know so."
He stated it with firm conviction, serving as the stoic supporter has he had so often as of late.
When she had come to him, trembling, fearful, tears welling in those stunning lavender eyes, he had known something was amiss. She had been doing so well, so brave! And now this...
No, he would not think of it as a curse. It was a blessing- they were a blessing.
A gift.
He would be there, matching her stride for stride. He could not bear the physical burden for her... but he could lend her emotional support. He could be there for her, through thick and thin, as he had promised himself he would long ago. His love for her, and hers for him, would act as a shield.
Nothing could penetrate a love so true.
"Rest... you need your sleep."
He smiled at the irony... to think, he used their love as a shield against the result of such.
Perhaps he could come to love their children as more than an extension of her. Beloved in their own right.
... "Sleep."

She nodded her consent, red-rimmed eyes closing obediently. Her sunken features were testament to how little sleep she had been getting as of late. Stress, physical and mental, was waring her thin.
She sunk to the ground, seeking a comfortable position while still maintaining the all-too-important physical contact with her beloved Lifemate.
She was weak- she knew it. She admitted it. She'd tried to stand on her own, and failed. She couldn't deal with emotional pain, as others might- she couldn't brush it off. It took its physical toll in ways that ardent ordeals never should. Manifesting itself, wrestling itself into the corporeal plain- with her as its conduit.
He dispelled that pain. Made it tolerable. Made it safe.
"Don't leave me..." she murmured sleepily, succumbing to her body's needs. ".... don't leave me."
If he did, she wouldn't survive.

He smiled, and knelt beside her, his larger form curling around hers to serve as a physical boundary between her and the elements lurking just beyond their sanctuary.
This was a place he and his brother used to come as a child. They'd sneak away from their addled Mother, and clamber up the mountainside to play. One day, they'd found a cave that extended back a scant few feet into the mountainside before curving abruptly, creating a second chamber that was essentially shielded from the weather. They'd hidden there during a thunderstorm, and had emerged dry- though the ground outside was soaked. It was their little sanctuary, their sacred place, their secret hideaway.
And now he would raise his children there.
He nuzzled her once more before settling himself down to sleep, slowing his breathing to a rhythmic purr. If he left, she would sense his absence, and awaken. He couldn't afford to keep her awake- not now, when the lives of multiple beings hung precariously on her physical strength.
"Sorry sweetheart... you're stuck with me."

And so it went.
Sadiki regained her confidence, nudged along the path by stoic, warm-hearted Kazan.
Kazan learned that when a pregnant mare says that she wants rough Redwood bark slathered in fresh honey from the two-legged's hive, topped with blueberries from that one bush (you know, the one that's really close to the willow?) by the third stream from the cave, and strawberries- oo, and some grass, nice fresh grass- and a bushel of apples! and- ... she really meant it.
The pair stumbled towards the path the parenthood, until one day...

Kazan stumbled, knocked off-kilter by the heart-wrenching scream emitting from the hallowed cave.
Crimson eyes flickering queasily towards where his Lifemate strained on her childbed(rock. she was giving birth on a bloody rock!) he swiveled and marched back towards the other end of the foot-deep ditch he'd dug himself.
He'd been pacing for what seemed like an eternity, ever since that accursed two-legged had kicked him out of his own cave. She needed him! She was up there, in pain, and he was down here- he strode forward purposefully forward before falling backwards.
Mumbling curses under his breath, he returned to his pacing.
'She's alright- i've birthed a thousand foals, she's no different. Trust me: you being here will only make this go slower. She won't push as hard with you here- such a demure mare, she's probably worried of getting too sweaty under your gaze!' the Shaman chuckled, shaking his head at the foolishness of it all. Here he was, in the middle of nowhere, birthing foals form a mare who SHOULD have made the journey to the birthing grounds before she'd gotten too fat to waddle all the way there. And the stallion! his jumbled excuse- we thought it would be two, we didn't expect her to get this big this fast, I thought we could-"
Kazan shook away the memories, frowning as he swiveled and paced the other direction.
What was taking so long?

But it happened.
And three healthy foals were placed in their baskets, there to remain until they gathered the strength to live on their own.
