i was randomly looking through my Word documents and i found my speech that i gave for my graduation last year and i thought i'd post here just because.
Dr. Seuss once said “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." This philosophy should remain in the forefront of our minds as we go through the rest of our lives. We should always look toward what will make us happy, not what will make everybody else happy. Reach for the goals you set for yourself so you don’t burn yourself out trying to achieve goals set for you by someone else. I have a poem I'd like to read for you tonight. I'd like to credit the author, but unfortunately they chose to remain anonymous. “I believe in tomorrow. I believe in it because it has not yet come. I am young, and youth always believes that tomorrow will be better than today. I believe that I will do tomorrow what I failed to do today, and be then what I have not yet been. I trust the future. Youth is always glorious because it trusts the future. Youth will attempt the impossible, scale the mountain that is supposed to be inaccessible, and dare the thing that age will fear. I believe in tomorrow because it is unspoiled. I have, nor has anyone, yet written on it with grimy finger or folly or selfishness or sin. No wars have been fought in tomorrow. No lie has been told, or dishonest deed done in tomorrow. No man has treacherously failed a friend in tomorrow. Tomorrow is one clean, beautiful day, the day on which dreams come true, on which the impossible things will yet be done, on which I shall have the nerve and the will to be and to do that which was too much for me in the grim battle of today. I believe in tomorrow.” This poem speaks to us because we are tomorrow. Tomorrow is where we will leave our mark. Tomorrow is the fresh start that we need to prove ourselves. Tomorrow is when each of us will succeed in what we set out to do. Oliver Wendell Holmes said “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." Looking back on being a student here at Odyssey has shown me the true meaning of that statement. Just because your past hasn’t been perfect or because the future that other people project for you isn’t glorious doesn’t mean that you’re not a good person or a strong individual. Tonight is the first step towards the rest of our lives. This is the point where we burst out of the black and white Xeroxed forms of normality and status quo and we find ourselves encompassed in our own bright and colorful individuality. So, class of 2008, let us always be true to ourselves, believe in tomorrow and let’s take the world by storm.
