Momma's coat shone with a healthy sheen. Perhaps it was due to the fact that the lone female had decided to take up packlife. In Gomorrah, the alphess Piper did her best to keep her entire pack well fed. It was something that the white female prided herself on.
Either way, it was working.
Xavierie looked down at his reflection in the puddle of rainwater. It blipped and blurred, but even its muddy depths always showed what he was. A vividly bright yellow puppy with a shimmer to his coat. A shine like a piece of gold stolen from the Upright's camp. A shine that matched the Sun's rays. His coat was shiny, abnormally so. No matter what he did (and he had tried plenty of things already), the glint never quite went away.
He lowered himself into the mud, getting first one side and then the other caked with brown. Brown hid the glittering yellow, but it had to be thick. He then sprawled out in the sun, coat soaking up the heat like a solar panel. It radiated throughout his body. It was as if the heat was its own separate entity inside the young pup's soul. It bounced around inside of him, a ball of energy willing itself to freedom. At least, it would've gotten free if the pup hadn't been so lazy.
In a pack filled with sin, Xavierie's vice was slothfulness.
Instead, the energy inside of him was left to run laps on a metal wheel made for mice.

Squall hadn't gotten lost this time.
He kept himself to the outer edge of the forest, tail waving between his thighs. His orange pelt was the perfect color to soak up the sun. Soft storm-violet tiger stripes lined his back and face, making him look more formidable than he truly was. In all reality, Squall was a little bit of a coward. Okay, he was alot a coward. But today he was feeling pretty good about himself.
A spring-colored leaf flew across his path and a grin cracked his face. He gave a sharp bark, bouncing over the leaf and batting at it with a paw. Then he froze. On the air was the scent of puppy... And not Novik or Switch... New puppy...
Excitement bounded along inside of him as he loped forwards, leaf long forgotten. He caught sight of the pup and froze. The other's coat was slick with mud, paws and face only showing the bright yellow that the rest of his pelt surely was. Nerves replaced the excitement he felt. Squall tucked his tail between his legs and crept forwards, keeping a storm-colored eye on the other male uncertainly.

A bark made his ears p***k and his nose quiver, taking in all the scents of the forest. It was a puppy... A puppy had barked. But it was not one of his siblings' voices... No. It was someone new. A stranger's voice. He stiffened as if to rise to his paws, then relaxed again, muscles going limp. Why should he get up, anyway? Let the other pup come to him. He opened his mouth and let out a loud yap, pushing himself into a sitting position rather glumly. Glowing green eyes held little interest, though...he was quite curious. It just never looked as such.
There. In the bushes. He let out another bark, tail giving a lone wag. He was contemplating laying down once again when a tiger-striped orange pup slinked forwards with his tail between his legs. He looked several months older. His own steely eyes were locked on the mud-caked pup, studying him. He sat down a few inches away. He smelled of the alpha pair. Was he their son?
Xavierie could only stare.
From the soft violet marks running across his face to the brilliantly white patch of fur on his chest... This pup was beautiful... A delicate flower, looking at him through timid eyes... Xavi opened his mouth to say something, but heat quickly rose to his face and he looked away, down at the pup's paws. He clapped his maw shut.

Squall lowered his body into a sit; surely a sit wouldn't offend the other pup. The stranger was staring at him, staring a hole through him. His own gaze was a brilliant green...and was it glowing? Squall's ears flicked back and forth. That new wolf, Kurosage... She had a glowing eye. And she'd been pregnant too... Was this pup her son? But...he looked nothing like her.
The yellow pup opened his maw, as if to speak, then shut it again and looked away bashfully. Squall smiled. Was this perhaps someone more timid than himself? His head tilted to one side, he cleared his throat. "Hi..." he began lamely. "I'm Squall."
The pup was quiet for a moment. Then, "Xavierie." It was pronounced like ZAY-vee-air-ee.
Squall's tail gave a small wag. He wanted to greet the other, but stayed where he was at. "Why are you covered in mud?"
"Because you wouldn't want to see my coat clean," came the soft, sullen reply.
What was he hiding under all that caked on dirt? Something bad? He offered a smile. "I think I would."

"I doubt it." Xavi stared at him, ears flattening. If this Squall ever saw the shine that his coat held, he would laugh. Who wouldn't? Xavi didn't look like a normal wolf... He couldn't even hunt during the day! And what was with the glow in his eyes? No, that was the last thing he needed, for a cute wolf to poke fun at him. No thank-you.
But Squall held fast, a grin rising on his lips. "Really. I would. Come with me. I know of a pond." He gave his tail a quick wag, then he turned and trotted off.
Xavi watched him go, interest piqued now. Squall was adorable... Did he dare risk it? Did he let the alphas' son see his awful yellow pelt? It was a risk... He would've much rather just laid here. He would've much rather played with the dandelions at his paws. But when Squall looked over his shoulder and gave a beautiful resounding bark, it had Xavierie on his paws in two seconds flat, loping after the other male. Funny how a cute boy could do that to you...

Squall remembered the pond first off, his curiosity of what the pup looked like under all those layers of mud piquing. He gave his tail a hearty wag, then pranced off in hopes that the yellow boy would follow him. He paused as Xavierie merely lay there, watching him. His ears flicked back, pinned against his head. Did the pup not trust him? He gave a sharp, clear bark, however, and Xavi was on his paws, galloping after him. It made him smile.
Was this his first friend outside of the family? Maybe...
They reached the pond, Squall sitting down right on the shore. His tail dangled into the softly rippling water. Xavierie paused, and looked between Squall and the water, looking down at his reflection. His eyes narrowed. "You sure you want to see it? Promise you won't turn and run away?"
Squall chuckled. "Promise."

Xavi waded in, letting the liquid overtake his body. He turned circles in the water, letting the mud rinse away before taking a deep breath and heading to shore. As the sun hit his glimmering coat, Squall's eyes widened. He looked him up and down, ears pricked forwards. Xavierie stood still against the daylight, letting his glow be known to the other young male.

He watched in half-awe as Xavierie splashed through the shallows, the mud flaking off and turning the clear water a murky brown. The yellow pup looked at him and paused, a frown on his face, before coming up out of the water. His coat was soaked, plastered to his skin...
But my god, how he shined... His entire body, it glowed like the sun. Squall took a step back. His tail wagged. "Wow... I expected...like...a deformity? Haha, no, you're just a really bright pup, huh?"
"I told you you wouldn't like it," Xavierie grumbled softly, looking down at his paws.
"Are you kidding?" Squall asked, dumbfounded. "You shine brighter than the stars in the sky. You shine as bright as the sun. Why would you want to hide it away in the mud?" No, now he wished he himself shone. He would never get lost again!

The stars? Xavierie's head lifted and a smile rose on his lips. Squall thought he shone like the stars? His heart gave a little flip and he giggled softly. "I...I don't know. But...thank you."
"For what?"
"For looking at me? And telling me those things?"
"I only spoke the truth," he said with an easy smile. "But I have to go back soon. Swell gets a little nervous if I'm gone too long."
"Right away?" Xavi's voice rose to a desperate shrill.
"I suppose not right away. Do you have something better in mind?"
"You could always swim with me." Even if he didn't like to swim himself. Took too much energy in his opinion, but he kept his eyes locked on the other male, heart pounding quick and rhythmic inside his ribcage. Oh, please say yes, he thought, ever so hopeful.
Squall grinned at him and nodded. With all of his weight, he lunged into the pool, legs splayed out as he hit the surface with a splash.
Xavierie could only smile. He knew two things. 1) He was in love and 2) He would never hide his gaudy coat away again...
At least not around Squall.
