All saplings live on a set of four Pacific islands. They are large enough to sustain the entire population. The islands also have very varied ecosystems. The mountains are frigid; there are decidous and tropical forests, as well as long beaches, desert, and grassland. In fact, the only uninhabitable island is the south-eastern one. In the center is a large volcano, and the surrounding land is caked dirt and dry. The few plants that grow cannot support saplings. Some saplings do live on this island, but they are outcasts from their own societies.

There are no humans on these islands. Remember Dinotopia? Yeah. It's like that. However, some human remnants like trash or broken boats still wash ashore. Some Saplings may use these items as decorations.

Many saplings prefer to live in the area their plant portion is native to--for instance, a pine tree sapling may like to live in the mountains--but that's not universally true. Saplings can live quite comfortably outside of the habitat they were born in.

Lone saplings have been known to travel great distances, seeking a group, a mate, or peace of mind. Saplings are excellent swimmers (wood floats, after all), and can travel easily between the islands. Other saplings may prefer to float on makeshift seacraft. Clans, however, generally stick to one territory.

You may want to keep in mind where your sapling usually lives when roleplaying. We currently have quite a small community, and this certainly isn't a rule, but it would be unusual for a sapling from a clan in the mountains to meet up with an outcast in the wasteland.

Sapling Behavior

Saplings are sentient, possessing the equivalent of a primitive human culture. They are capable of using simple tools but certainly haven't built the wheel yet. They have developed a complex spoken and written language. Saplings communicate mostly through cat-like noises, including purrs, meows, yowls, and hisses, but cannot hit anything as loud as a roar. Saplings will also shake their branches. A light rustling of the head branches means "hey, what's up?" A sapling that turns and shakes its tail branch is showing disdain or disgust. Violent shaking of head and tail branches is a warning sign. Shaking may also signal respect or "no harm done."

Saplings are omnivorous, but their diet can vary depending on location. Forest saplings tend to feed more on fruits, berries, and vegetables, whereas desert or mountain saplings will take small animals when they can find them. Grassland saplings tend to be the most omnivorous. Eating habits also vary due to individual preference, or personal or clan beliefs. Saplings are also geophagous, meaning they must eat rocks or dirt for necessary minerals.

Saplings are all individuals, and there are no overarching beliefs for the whole species. Most abhor violence and dishonesty (unless necessary), but others may be cads or warhawks.

Families, Groups, and Clans

Saplings are social, and most travel in one of three kinds of group:

Families: Many saplings travel in family groups. These tend to be the smallest groups, generally made up of one pair and possibly their offspring. Sometimes families will grow into groups or clans if the offspring decide to stay with their parents, find their own mates, and have children, but more often the offspring will leave when they are mature, leaving their parents to continue traveling together.

Groups: A group of saplings are simply unrelated individuals who choose to travel together. While there may be a few rules and a designated leader, groups are generally not as established as clans. They also tend to travel farther instead of taking a territory.

Clans: Clans are the most established groups of saplings, and the largest. Clans can be run in many fashions: diplomatically, via a monarchy, or they may even be religious. Clans tend to have a strict set of rules and beliefs, with each member assigned to a task, and have a staked-out territory.
There are currently no sapling clans.

To form an official clan, a group of at least four saplings must have completed one RP showing desire to form a clan. These saplings can be a family, or they can be unrelated. There can be more than four saplings in the initial clan, but only four must be included in the RP. There also must be at least two owners involved (in other words, no making a clan with just your four saplings!)
