Jack could never stay in one place for too long. A dilapidated log would finally give way to rot, an unoccupied nest was - much to his surprise - occupied. But the otter never minded too much, simply picked through the moldy rubble for his effects or tipped his hat at the angry, spitting she-predator and took his leave. That jaunty sway never left his step, that faint gleam never unmarried his eye - nope, even when there was no one to perform for after such dramatic debacles of house and home, Jack still carried the theatrics of the stage.

This time there was no upheaval from his current abode. The pirate - excuse me - pirate captain had simply decided he had been in this hovel of choice much too long. Flagged by wanderlust (with a dash of paranoia), Jack once again gathered up his things and moved for the umpteenth time. Even if he didn't find a place of rest, it'd be all right; wherever he lay would be his bed.

"But damn it all," he grunted, taking a seat in a particularly familiar area to consult with his bottle of rum. "A bed would be nice tonigh'."

"Sure would, Capt'n!" piped a tinny voice at his side. Scupper'd dropped the neck of the sack he'd been hauling for Jack, beaming up at the captain. Jack dropped his dark eyes to the tiny pup and without a word, passed the bottle.

"Yer too kind, Capt'n!" he quipped, wrapping his tiny paws around the too-big bottle.

"So I've been told, Scup, so I've been told...."

Aurora was exploring, as much as she dared, the edge of her home. It was a rather lovely spot, though not quite as large as she might've been used to. It resembled the Woodcutter's Cottage where she'd lived for sixteen years and thus she'd taken to naming it such. She had her home in a rather tall and wide tree that's based had been hollowed out where a den was tucked safety below. A smaller backdoor entrance led to the pond that was behind the tree, a nice place to catch fish or swim and fed by tinkling stream heading past the tree and into land she knew not much of.

She walked softly, paws making no sound at the contact with the ground, but opening her mouth to sing trailing notes to the birds hoping they were as friendly as the ones she had known. She hadn't really met any other otters since arriving in the Oasis. She didn't know whether she'd be lucky or not in that aspect because in the end she was far lonelier than she could ever remember being.

"I knew you, once upon a dream, the gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam..." the song trailed off, dying quite swiftly in her throat. It was a bit too familiar to be comfortable singing aloud. She took to humming it, rearing up on her rear paws and dancing about before an unfamiliar voice greeted her ears...

"But damn it all,"

Her blue eyes went wide, mouth falling open in a comical little o shape. She looked around, the voices were clear but she didn't see anyone quite yet. Deciding it wouldn't do to run off, she headed towards the sound of talking making her way to the edge of the stream and startled to find two otters sitting quite nearer than she thought.

"Hello?

After Jack had decided Scupper'd had had his fill on the bottle of rum, he plucked it out of his young charge's hands and sat back. Sometimes he thought it'd be a lot easier to travel without the little sprat gallivanting about behind him, but he had his uses (such as being Jack's Official Bag Carrier, which the whelp treated as though it were his God given right). But between watching his rear and Scupper'd's, the captain's paws were full.

And Jack simply did not like having his paws full. Unless it was liquor or lady. He heaved a sigh and scratched at his jaw.

Scupper'd, while not the brightest coin in the chest, was still savvy enough to pay attention to his surroundings when Jack was busy being thoughtful. Which was okay, because his captain was The Smartest! captain this side of the Oasis (and probably all of it too if Scupper'd knew a thing or two). The little brown pup decided to keep his ears open - after fawning over Jack for a little bit - and it was he, not his captain, that first heard the greeting. A soft, sweet lady's greeting.

"Capt'n!"

"Wha' issit, tyke?"

The tiny otter signed his paws through the air, very nearly enamored to silence, "A... a--"

Jack's furry brow furrowed, "'A--a?'-" He turned, eyes widening "-A princess!"

"Yes!"

It was hardly the best greeting to receive, being she already knew she was a princess. Still neither seemed averse to her appearance, so she smiled dropping down to all four paws and padding towards the two. She had quite forgotten what the fairies always told her, "don't talk to stranger", falling to the back of her mind.

"Hello, I'm Princess Aurora," she greeted, slipping into a bow and somehow managing to defy gravity by keeping her crown on her head. (Really sometimes she thought the fairies had glued it there!) She rose with a smile, blue eyes curious and shining with hope that she'd found a friend.

"Who are you?" which sounded much better than her thought of "what are you?" having never seen a pirate before. In her opinion, the larger otter was dressed quite oddly and didn't seemed to have groomed for awhile but beggars really couldn't be choosy so she pushed the thought aside. At least he didn't seem like he was going to run her off or anything that would land her in trouble.

Jack looked absolutely tickled. He may not have found a place to lay his head, but something much prettier had been sent his way for sure. Before Scupper'd could get a word in, the captain's tail caught his nose and sent him tumbling backwards. It was unintentional as far as anyone would be able to discern, for Jack had busied himself with sweeping off his hat for a dramatic bow of his own.

"I am Captain Jack Sparrow," he said, a devilishly charming smile twisting up the corners of his furry mouth; gold glinted beyond his fangs. Scupper'd tumbled over his paws to sit erect at his captain's side. He puffed out his furry chest, smiling.

"N' I'm his firs' mate!"

Jack cut his eyes at the little whelp, "Cabin boy."

"Bu' you said--" whap! "Ouch! Fineee."

"N' what are you doin' out here by yourself, love?"

She laughed gently as Scupper'd went tumbling before turning to the Captain. She felt rather delighted to see such manners, never quite sure if she was being too formal when she thought of meeting others. The charming smile was far different from anyone she remembered, her father's had been much more astonished, Hubert's had been quite confused before turning to dreamy, and Phillip's had been very soft. Truthfully she felt quite drawn to it, lovely as it was.

She turned her blue eyes to Scupper'd, "It is lovely to meet you, Captain Jack Sparrow and his cabin boy." The inflection on the larger otter's title was gentle with a slight teasing undertone that she hadn't realized.

"I was venturing to explore the small land I've come to call home. It wouldn't do for a princess not to know her own territory. Are you from around here, Captain?" There was a fleck of worry in her eyes, that had sounded much more forward than she'd meant it to. She crossed her front paws, turning her eyes away from the male in hopes he wouldn't notice and think she was simply curious and staring instead from the small otter to the bottle that had been forgotten to the stream and everywhere inbetween.

The seafaring captain fixed his hat back onto his head at a jaunty angle and reclined back on his haunches. He studied the young princess with an appraising eye as though she were a treasure to be hoarded. He couldn't help himself and he couldn't deny it - she was a pretty little thing, and the title of royalty was like... well, it was the golden crown on that golden head of hers! That soft grin never wavered.

"Th'pleasure's mine, Princess," he drawled. Scupper'd nodded 'til it looked like his head just about snapped from his little neck. Jack glanced at him again, patted him as if to say 'bless him, the boy.' Furry brows rose, smile growing a mite larger.

"Ahh, this is true, Princess - but no escort?" Jack leaned back and stared at her with reproving disbelief. "A lady of y'status out and about? Why, there are pirates afoot aroun' these parts!"

The tiny brown cub looked up and opened his maw, only to garner a mouthful of paw-pad.

"Can't say I am, Princess," he admitted with put on self-pity. Perhaps it was real. "I jus' travel wherever m'paws lead."

"An' 'is rum takes 'im!"

Her golden hair fell over her shoulder, the tips curling and bouncing with the motion, as she titled her head. What in the world was a pirate? She tried to search her memory. Curses, fairies, kings, queens, gifts, berries, strangers, dreams, birthday, betrothed, prince, princess, crown...no mention of pirates had ever come up.

"What is a pirate?" she asked, a slight flush rising to her furry cheeks. It was a fair sign of a sheltered life not knowing what a pirate was, not noticing the male before happened to be one was simply obvious. Surely the tiny otter was easier to overlook. "I don't think I need an escort but you could escort me around, if it's not any trouble." Seeing as she hadn't met any other otters yet, she really couldn't ask anyone else to be her escort and she could always try flying if trouble presented itself but it could never hurt to have a friend.

"You don't have a home? Why not?" She really couldn't imagine wandering about forever, for awhile perhaps, but surely one needed a home. She turned her gaze to the small otter, wondering what rum was, but not venturing to ask it just quite yet.

Jack could have bristled with glee-- in fact, he did! Oh, what is a pirate, indeed! He tugged his tricorne from his head once more, pressed it to his chest.

"Ah, love, they're a tricky lot, I c'n tell you that," he admitted with a sigh. He reset his hat and climbed to his paws, rounding on Aurora with an innocuous tilt in his step. "They roam th'sea in magnificent ships, hold up entire fleets with their nefariousness! Make their livin' pillaging, raping, ransacking entire towns if they're by th'sea! And you, Princess, out here a' nigh' with those wily beasts at bay! Why... th'tide could be rollin' in and them along with it!"

"Scary!"

Jack nodded, looked at Aurora with pity in his eyes, "Why, yeh're a prime target, Princess! Pretty as y'are and royalty t'boot. I'm surprised those pirates haven't spotted y'yet!"

Scupper'd's expression was caught between laughter and worry. Why was Capt'n Jack bein' so mean to the pretty lady? She didn't know better! And she seemed awful nice... then again, Jack wasn't your usual pirate. In the end, the pup settled for a rocky smile; Princess Aurora would be fine. Her two paws were enough to protect her from his captain!

"We'll take tha'job wid pride, Princess!" he squeaked, hopping forward. His bow was less graceful than theirs had been. Jack chuckled.

"Home... huh. Tha's a long story, Princess, it'd probably put y'ta sleep." He seemed to consider his next words for a moment before jerking his head at Aurora, "Come, le's walk, shall we?"

She stared, suddenly rethinking the idea of exploring. She hadn't seen any, regardless of the fact she currently was seeing one and had no idea what they looked like, so perhaps the male was exaggerating their population in the Oasis. Besides, she really didn't want to stay cooped up in her den.

She had no reason to think she was being duped though she did wonder if he wasn't a bit of a trickster. She didn't think he'd do anything to hurt her so she forgot about asking if he was a pirate, remembering he had said he was a Captain. Whatever that was, perhaps he defended people from pirates? It was as good a guess as any other she might have, even if it was wrong.

"That sounds horrible! Why would they do that?" she did genuinely look horrified, eyes wide and brows furrowed. She had a fair idea of pillaging and ransacking, once Phillip had recounted his encounter with Maleficent. She imagined raping to be similar, which it was if one considered it was simply a different object, and while she had little seen the sea she knew what a ship was though they weren't much use in her father's kingdom.

She smiled down at the small otter, walking forward so she could brush her paw over his head. "Thank you, brave soldier," her voice was soft and her smile wide. She turned her head to Jack, before padding to his side and consenting to walk with a nod.

She turned to steal glances at him, not that she would quite admit to such, "I think we have a while before we reach anywhere, I'd like to hear your story." Really any excuse not to have to say good-bye sooner would have done, but curiosity apparently did not kill the princess. So she had to try, he was interesting, this Captain she'd met.

Scupper'd could have fainted. In fact, he teetered a little in lieu of Aurora's attentions on his person, whiskers twitching willy-nilly as his face burned beneath his dark fur. A princess, a real-live princess! The little pup squeaked with surprise and delight; his tail wouldn't drop from its pleased curve for days.

Oh, how her minor distress stroked Jack's ego so! But ever the professional, the captain kept his excitement controlled, his face sober. He nodded in silent agreement and shrugged a slow shrug, as though saying 'why indeed.' The world-weariness flickering across his face was not all show then, for once. Though a pirate himself, he couldn't help but think back on his past experiences. Pirates stole, became rich. Others noticed, stole from them. Pirates pirating pirates. They really were a bunch of seadogs.

He smiled at her eagerness, perhaps his most genuine yet (in in a long while), "Well, then, Princess... can' deny tha', can I? Especially when comin' from such a pretty face."

Jack fell silent as they continued their walk, Scupper'd bringing up in the rear with his bag of odd baubles. Barbossa crossed his mind, Elizabeth in hot pursuit. The soft sound of grinding teeth filled the otherwise quiet air that had fallen across the three. And then, like catching one's paw through the delicate fibres of a spiderweb, his bitterness was swept away.

"I use't travel th'seas myself, Princess. S'beautiful out there, water as blue an' clear as yehr eyes." Jack paused. He missed the sea, the white caps breaking across its surface, the way it raged when a storm thundered its discontent overhead. He missed the Pearl, how she road the waves with all the bravado of her captain, as wily and fresh as a seaside wench, but with all the grace and airs of a lady of nobility. The freedom of both married together, the freedom of chance.

"There's nothin' like it, you know. Wildness of th' sea, controllin'-- mannin' yehr own fate..." he said wistfully. "But funny thing, Fate. I've taken many a chance with her, n'sometimes I'm no' in her favor. I can nev'r stay too comfortable in one place for too long. Simply won't do! I've got wanderlust in these paws since my ship was stolen."
PostPosted: Mon Jun 01, 2009 1:19 pm

She listened, intently, trying to ignore the slight heat in her cheeks at being called a pretty face, or having her eyes compared to the sea. She padded along, wondering what it was like to travel the sea but having very little idea of if she'd like it. She thought briefly that Fate was a being that could never decide what it liked more, happiness or chaos or loneliness to be instilled in its subjects. She can't voice such though, a rare moment where she doesn't sound so much like herself, so instead she focused on Jack.

"Your ship was stolen?" she sighed, frowning, "By pirates?" Oh yes, she was bound now to think everything was the fault of a pirate, corruption.

"Isn't it hard not to have a home? To have a place to return to and be safe? It must be hard always traveling and never knowing where you're going or who you'll meet. You don't have family here?" She blinked a moment, perhaps family wasn't the right direction to go in, but scraped the thought away. He wouldn't need to ask about her family, where ever they were...

She turned her head to peer at Scupper'd, "And does your cabin boy has the same wanderlust as you in his paws?" It was not so much a question as a distraction from getting too deep in thought of families. She'd just started accepting that she was on her own, free in some way that she hadn't been before. It just wouldn't do to start getting hopes up again about seeing family, about being found by a certain prince, not again.

"What was your ship like, Jack?" she smiled, that would surely please him and take away any thoughts of family. After all what was a captain without his ship? A shipless captain she supposed.

"By the wors' kind of pirate, love," Jack said gently. "A lot of mutineers I though' was my crew."

Remembrance of that particular instance still brought a bitter taste to his mouth, though he often spent his time playing it off. But what good was reminiscing on the past? It was funny how one person, one first mate, could dismantle a person's entire view of others. Jack cleared his throat; he suddenly wanted another drink of rum.

He chuckled and rolled his shoulders back, giving a small skip as he walked, his effects giving a merry jingle. Scupper'd scampered after him and grinned between the two, trying to keep up with their much longer strides.

"I do~" he half sang, proud that she had made the assumption that Jack and he shared the same amount of restlessness. As though it were a good thing. The captain snorted, tail clipping the tiny otter's backside.

"I don' think I've ever stayed in one place for too long, Princess. Th' ship, my ship, th' lovely Black Pearl, she was my mother, my lover, my everything. She was a lovely thing - th' loveliest ship I've ever laid eyes on. But, no' knowing wha's ahead... tha's the excitement of travel. M'addicted to tha' uncertainty. All work n' no play...."

His furry lips split into a mild grin, and he leaned towards the Princess with his brows raised, "Bu'... I don' mind a little play every now n' again."
PostPosted: Fri Jun 05, 2009 10:51 pm

Mutineers, of course, made no sense to the princess but she worked it out to mean that his crew were thieves and had stolen his ship. She was torn between thinking that was a shame, it was wrong to steal, and thinking it was for the best, surely meeting this entertaining fellow was right. She was quite thankful for the interruption provided by Scupper'd, thinking too much never lead to good things.

"You do? You must be a brave soul to wander about along with the Captain, right?" she asked bestowing yet another smile on the small otter. She complimented him finding, he in his excitement, reminded her of the good fairies or the woodland animals she used to know. She slowed ever so slightly, not enough to make the little one think he couldn't keep up, not wishing to lose him should he tire. She might have suggested Jack lift his cabin boy onto his back if she hadn't become distracted.

He described his ship so fondly. She smiled, thinking he was probably quite in love with the ship he called Black Pearl. He almost made her want to take up traveling and adventure but then she didn't think it would suit her. She wasn't struck with wanderlust, slight curiosity here and there, so as to head off into the very unknown world around her. She doubted she'd like it much anyways.

Play? She stopped, blinking, her mind confused slightly. Just what in the world was he talking about? It certainly had a sound to it, so he was making some sort of statement or query. She could recall her mother telling her to be careful, men often would try to take her honor as a princess was certainly a trophy to some, but that couldn't be what Jack was doing. No, he wouldn't want to tarnish her or hurt her. "I don't know what you're talking about, I'm afraid." At least she hoped she didn't know what he was talking about, even if her questioning gaze might make him think she had an idea. It was only a word, albeit one covered in hidden meaning, so she shrugged it off. It was nothing to ponder over.

"Do you ever dream of finding another ship?" she asked, unwilling to fall into awkward silence.

"Oh, I y'am!" Scupper'd trilled. He could have been floating on air with the way the Princess doted on him so. Though it did not cross his mind, his captain never even gave him such attentions - and he was the only he had! Jack gave the pup a mildly disapproving look that could have been read one of two ways-- don' ge' aheada yerself, whelp or pup's gettin' more attention th'n me! Though, to be fair, it looked more like the former. A big head never did anyone good.

The captain's winsome ways were clearly not working on the Princess at the moment (when did they ever work?), so he retreated with a sheepish smile and shrug. Jack had seen many pretty faces in his time, but none quite like hers. The soft-edged innocence of captive royalty. There was something in those eyes of hers that he wasn't quite keen on taking no matter how much of a scalawag he was. He hummed a quiet note, losing himself to his thoughts again.

Another ship?

"I've dreamt, lass... but never of another ship. Never." Jack shook his head, "Th' Black Pearl is th' only ship I dream of. Th' only dream I dream. Y'know, she was th' fastest ship in the world, a damsel no one could ever catch. Hmm... perhaps a widow, dressed in black, caught once n' never again."

It was obvious he had not spoken of the Pearl for quite some time, for even Scupper'd quieted in lieu of the nostalgia in the captain's voice. Jack fell silent again, but nothing awkward-- it was clear he was preoccupied, brow worried with a small wrinkle. Unsettled by his silence, the smallest of the otters bumped against Sparrow's leg. Jack blinked away his reverie again and picked up his gait.

"What abou' you, Princess? Wha's royalty withou' a kingdom? Less we're on it...." He laughed.
