The ball was starting up cosily by now, things were going quite alright...

And then, the duke made a short announcement, calling four, five people out of the versatile group and requesting them to come out into the entrance hall and go into the (off limits!) left wing.

The staff and guards would let them pass, lead them to a cosy small assembly of couches and chairs out in the hallway, where they would wait.

Dreamer (Tnau)
Ella (with/without Faolan) (Redbud)
Eli (umbra)
Dr. Cromwell (Ruri)
Verdant (?) (LLWinter)

Mister Galvao was called in next, after miss Sanders was released from the Duke's business room. Please enter, close the door and have a seat in front of the desk.

Now tell me, tell me, what is it you seek?

Eli wasn't sure if he was relieved or disappointed as he was called out of the waiting group in the hall to go see what precisely the Duke wanted from him. The conversation had been flowing decently and he'd actually been enjoying himself, on the other hand from the way the girls had looked after they'd come back this was clearly not to be missed.

The auburn haired man closed the room's door behind himself and Kell before quietly taking a seat in front of the large desk that seemed the focal point of the room, at least to Eli. With one hand on Kell's head, both to keep track of the canine and keep himself calm Eli looked directly forward " You wanted something of me "Your Grace?" The title felt awkward on his tongue but Eli had gone to the effort of figuring out what Banning was supposed to be called formally so he might as well say the words.

After dealing with Dreamer and Ellandra, Eli sure was an entirely different league of awkward.

'Your Grace'.

Oh boy. He almost made a face at the title. "Banning will do, mister Galvao. Now... to cut right to the deal without much fuss, I called you in here to offer you our services."
You DO remember what we're talking about here, right?

"If you are not familiar with our protocol, I will explain it to you in all detail, should you decide to take our offer. All it takes is a signature from you, a token of your trust to us. In return for your discretion about what we do, we will grant you one of our Sparks." Now it is up to you to tell me what you think you require. He already had an inkling, of course.

Keeping an eye on Kell -not many pets had ever lived in this house- he waited for the man to respond calmly.

Eli was more than a little relived that Banning preferred to be called by his given name, he didn't think he could have kept up with the title using for very long. The green eyed man listened quietly and nodded when the duke was finished speaking. He was more than willing to sign his name wherever required if it meant acquiring an Essentic. Keeping his mouth shut about what was going on here wasn't going to be a problem either really.

" Deal," Really why would anyone say no.. well aside from the desire to not own an illegal tool. Then again Eli was highly unconcerned about being caught, especially since the other's he'd seen seemed to be having little problems " You tell me how this all works and I'm fine with whatever I have to do." He knew vaguely from research and history books what Essentics where and what they did but the finer details were beyond him as was any sort of actual protocol that Banning had spoken of.

Kell watched Banning with mild interest in his soft brown eyes, the man's scent wasn't horribly strange but it was enough to make the scent hound want to investigate.

Why stick with titles when they held no meaning to the other half of the conversation, eh. It wasn't as if the man meant to offend him, so might as well go casual. Best basis for a relaxed customer-dealer bond in this case, too much fuss would just aggravate the man needlessly.

The approach seemed to do the trick. Banning knew Eli was being quite serious when he anounced he was ready that bluntly. Why waver?

"Alright then... If you have no doubts, this will be rounded off quick and smoothly."
And we greatly value this, we'll have you know.

"First of all, this is where we'll need you to sign."
the duke said as he retrieved a quite large piece of parchment from one of the many drawers in his desk. "Take your time to read it over while I go fetch your Spark. A Combat group, I assume? They're very hardy, and should be able to serve you well."

The Contract, like miss Katan and the others had seen before, was indeed a nice list of quite self-explanatory clauses and regulations, without fine print. In the meantime Banning shunted through what appeared to be a cleverly hidden door disguised as a wall-panel. Not long after he returned with a round limestone box. If it didn't look so heavy and stony, it could've been a cookie box, one of those old metal ones. The darker engravings in the soft beige tint left no doubt it wasn't one of those though.

While Banning disappeared Eli poured over the parchment, he'd never been good with legal mumbo jumbo and was thrilled to find this contract wasn't something only a lawyer could decipher. Equally thrilled though not surprised that the other had known that known what suited him best, heck Banning probably knew what he had planned for the thing.

Eli was skimming over the document again a second time when the duke returned. He raised an eyebrow at the sight of the box, the spark was in there? He couldn't make out what was engraved into it at this distance but figured if it was important he'd been told or shown about it.

" Everything looks good in the contract." Rather informative people of parchment it was too, Eli'd have to keep everything he'd gleaned from it committed to memory. The auburn haired man let his gaze settle once again on the limestone box " Conveniently attractive and unassuming storage container or does the limestone help prevent some sort of spark contamination?" he asked curiously. Both options seemed plausible for several reasons.

It was a good think the duke had had years and years of practice in keeping his visage from betraying any emotions he didn't wish to show. He respected Eli, but he couldn't help but be greatly amused by his attempts at holding up a standard. Just ask what's up with the damn box already, man. Heheh.

"Well, my assistant has taken a liking to collecting unusual storage media of all sorts and shapes, and assigning them to our Sparks. It is of no further importance, really." He wouldn't show him the other boxes and containers though, everyone his own. If Eli wanted to see them he'd have to ask, na.

"I guess it's more of a sentimental conduct than anything else. What this holds isn't something to be dumped in a cardboard box, at least in our work ethics. It would offend certain people if we didn't treat them like the valuable goods they are."
If you want to stow it in your pocket later, go ahead, we don't mind. Once it's yours it's yours, but for now we're looking after it well.

Banning then set the round container down, and lifted the lid off, revealing a sunny-sandy stone, with a shape reminiscent of some sort of starfish. It was safely nested on a soft burgundy filling. From between little hooked juts on the centre, like a pronged beak, a slow-warm fluid welled forth in a cosy, continuous flow, occasionally wisping up like flametongues.

"Once your signature is placed, you are free to pick it up. It isn't dangerous in the least, the Essence's ectoplasm is only half material. Once you initiate contact, you will bond with it, and imbue it with its Purpose. Tell it what to require of it, what you need it to do, to be, in your head. It will understand."

He backed away slightly, to give the man some room. That dog better keep his calm, too.

"You will know when you're finished, I assure you. Once the bond is formed and the Purpose is given, the Spark belongs to you, and nobody else."

Calloused fingers gripped the provided pen as the man hastily scrawled his signature on the contract. Ok easy part over, now to focus and preferably not screw this up.

As if sensing his master's tension Kell whined softly before laying at the man's feet, out of the way but comfortingly near.

Carefully Eli reached out to touch golden spark's rough and rocky sides, being carefully not to get his calloused fingers in the rich orange colored ectoplasm that flowed around the spark like tiny faintly glowing rivers. Banning might have said it wasn't dangerous but he didn't think if the spark was conscious as it was supposed to be that the thing desired him having his fingers actually in it.

Predictably just to foil him the stuff seemed to pulse with a stronger light then began spilling out of it's normal pathways moving closer to his fingers. With the way he felt drawn almost gravitationally to the spark now, he didn't think he could let go or even shifting the digits out of the way.

Suddenly there was cool, detached but insistent voice in his mind.' What is my primary function? What purpose, mission or goal is mine?' Accompanying the voice was a feeling of urgency as though the spark needed to know right this very second what Eli wanted of it.

If he hadn't been sort of expecting this the auburn haired man would have jumped out of his seat in shock. As it was a slightly nervous feeling fluttered in his stomach before he collected his thoughts and answered.

'Hunter, you're a hunter.' It was a simple answer and Eli closed his eyes trying to project images of past hunts he'd been on, trying to impress upon the spark just actually what he envisioned for it. He figured if it had connected with his mind already it could probably understand what he was trying to do. It was easier to use memories to convey the message anyways.

' I hunt, we hunt, understood.'

The man smiled and opened his eyes at that, relieved everything seemed to have gone well. he could move again but the odd draw he'd felt from the spark remained.

Well, that had been another tense moment. Always a sight, to watch people mold the connection between owner and Essentic. All in all, this had gone by in all serenity, not at all like Crux claiming his owner as much as the reverse.

Eli would do a good job with his companion, no doubt. He would be a firm and experienced leader, a just Owner, and that boded well for the future partnership. Despite Essentics being nigh unable to rebel against their owners directly, especially in the Combat class, respect from both sides was invaluable.

"I assume everything went well?" Banning returned the man's smile, even if his own was more of a sly smirk. Now that the tense moment was over, he could calmly collect the Contract, roll it up and seal it safely.

"If you need any other information or any other sort of source, I can give you the reader's digest of the 'manual' they come with."
he gestured at the small stack of little booklets on the desk. You know, customer service.

"You may or may not have read about how Influences work and about their growth and capabilities, but it's all in there. What we know, at least."

Eli nodded still holding the spark and keeping it out of range from Kell's grasp, the dog was still at his feet but he was also eying the spark in a way the man didn't like. " Things went fine, though it's a very um insistence bugger" he said fondly still feeling the unrelenting tug between them . " A manual would be good." With his luck any problems he had would crop up when he was miles from the city and the manual might be all the guidance he could get.

Banning nodded, with a relaxed smile, and handed him one of the pocket-size manuals. Ever so handy. the reason it wasn't much text was mainly because there wasn't much to be said though, as their knowledge was limited beyond the general facts, and there was no telling how diverse these things could become.

"If that is all, I wish you the best of luck."
All that needed to be done is, done, what had to be said is said. You can be on your way now.

"I hope you will have a pleasant night here at the manor. If your companion has any needs, just ask any of the Staff." yes, they will know how to accomodate you both, hm. Now if you'd be so kind to ask doctor Cromwell in?

Good luck indeed.

" Will do and thank you " Eli murmured as he stood, gathered his stuff and headed for the door, spark once more covered in it's little limestone box, Kell padding silently at his feet. Life was going to be interesting from now on the man thought as he slipped out of the room.
