General Information

Kulgenki are magical creatures that are linked directly to a person’s soul. They come in many variations, and all shapes and sizes. Though magical, they do have a physical presence within the world most of the time. Because of this, they can eat, drink and whatnot. If they so choose, however, they could just return to the artifact and rejuvenate that way instead. What the Kulgenki might eat varies on what its species is exactly as they would typically eat whatever creature type they are would eat.

Because of the connection they have with someone, only one Kulgenki can bond to a Humakin. Generally, everyone has a Kulgenki, but the time it takes for them to come in contact with their Kulgenki varies. Naturally, a Humakin is drawn towards the artifact that contains their Kulgenki, but it may still take some time for them to find the item. However, a Humakin is usually at least 5 years in age (or whatever that equivalent is for the particular race).

How a Kulgenki becomes infused with an item is still uncertain. Some believe that when a Humakin is first born, a piece of their soul binds to an item somewhere. In other words, what may be an ordinary object one day, can be a Kulgenki Artifact the next.

Either way, this artifact is what links the Humakin to the Kulgenki. If the artifact is destroyed, the Kulgenki is killed. Kulgenki may also reside within the artifact if they so wish.

The bond between Kulgenki and Humakin is very strong. They are capable of speaking telepathically to one another, and can always sense when the other is near. Kulgenki will rarely stray far from their Humakin though. And one shouldn’t think that their connection is like master and pet/slave. They’re partners and companions in battle and in life.

The personality of the Kulgenki is one in its own. It may be similar to that of the Humakin it’s bonded to, or be drastically different. Also, more often than not, the personality of the Kulgenki is not affected by its element.

The biggest Kulgenki are about the size of an african elephant and the smallest they can be as an adult is about the size of a cat or small dog. So many Kulgenki may be sized differently from their true animal counterparts.

Note on Cosplays

The Kulgenki comes in all shapes and sizes. Cosplays for Kulgenki are allowed to a certain extent. The only cosplays are allowed are if it is of the same species type as the Kulgenki (which basically means no human characters). For example, you may have a Wolf-Link from Twilight Princess as a wolf Kulgenki, or a mouse-ish Pikachu. But you may not get a dragon-pikachu or something like that.

Also, the cosplay is not exactly the character they appear to be. So please alter their backstory as needed.

Stages

Artifact: Before it’s discovered by its Humakin, the Kulgenki is completely dormant. The artifact can be a number of different things that would be relatively easy for a Humakin to wear or carry, such as weapons, a piece of armor, accessory. In some cases the artifact has been something like a book or a small trinket of sorts.
Developing Kulgenki: Once awakened, the Kulgenki will first appear to be a small and somewhat young version of its full self.
Adult: The Kulgenki has now fully developed and is quite capable in battle. If the Kulgenki had any elemental properties to its appearance, it’s more noticeable now.

While this isn't exactly a 'stage', it's something that the pair is unable to do until sometime after the Kulgenki becomes an adult.
Fusion: At a certain point, the Kulgenki and its Humakin may combine their powers to become one entity for a limited time. The way they look varies during the fusion. It may simply be an aura around either Kulgenki or Humakin. It might be that the Kulgenki has transformed into a weapon for the Humakin. Or it could be some physical combination of the two in some sort of way. During this, they’re considerable stronger than they were before. However, once fusion is over, they return to their normal selves. Often, they will feel drained for a time, and will not be able to fuse again for another day or so.

Many people find their Kulgenki before the age of 30 (or equivalent depending on the race), but there are still a great number of people that never discover their artifact. These people are often referred to as the Unfortunate.

Types

Some types of Kulgenki are more rare than others. These are the common types. They will generally look a bit different than normal creatures one would see in the world. Though some will look like natural creatures.

Aquatic: The marine animals. Fish, crustaeceans, ect. As a note, aquatic type creatures are not bound to the water as their real counterparts are. They are also not all of the water element. Things that would normally not be able to walk instead float around the air.
Avian: These tend to resemble birds in some fashion. And most are capable of flight.
Insectoid: Kulgenki that resemble insects and arachnids. These are often larger than real insects.
Mammalian: One of the more broad categories. These range from dogs, to cats, to horses, and other land mammals you may see around.
Reptilian: These take on after the cold blooded and scaly animals. Snakes, turtles, lizards and so on. Amphibians are included here as well.

And here are the rare types
Humanoid: These are Kulgenki that have humanlike qualities. These would include angels, demons, faeries, elementals, golems, ect. As a note, angels don’t quite seem as human as they do in most depictions of them.
Mythic: Kulgenki that are fashioned after creatures from mythology. Dragons, kirins, phoenixes and more.
Chimaera: These are basically any combination of 2-3 different creatures (that aren’t found in mythology). An example might be a dog with bat wings and a scorpion tail.

Note on humanoid Kulgenki: If uncertain about if a specific type that isn’t listed, ask me and I’ll let you know if it’s a Kulgenki or Humakin. Well this goes for in general.

While the Kulgenki may have the appearance of a particular creature, they may not always be of the same size as the actual animal. And depending on the size and strength of a particular Kulgenki (as well as their demeanor), the Kulgenki may be ridden by its Humakin or anyone else they allow.

Also no matter what species type a Kulgenki is, they can be attuned to any element (so you might end up with a fire aquatic and such). The only exception to this would be if you got a humanoid that's a water elemental... it will need to be water for sure.

All Kulgenki have an element, but Humakin are always non-elemental.

Death

Because of the strong bond between the Kulgenki and Humakin, the death of either side leads to drastic consequences. If the Humakin were to die, the Kulgenki dies as well most of the time. On occasion, depending on the strength of the Kulgenki, it remains alive. Developing Kulgenki never survive the trauma of the death of its Humakin.

However, if it does survive, it becomes feral and completely goes insane. It may not bond again, and it is never to return to normal. If the Kulgenki dies, the Humakin will normally stay alive. He or she will be deeply scarred though, and will often act listless or not completely there. They cannot get a new Kulgenki, and it is very hard for them to recover from the pain of losing the Kulgenki. Most often than not, a Humakin that has lost his or her Kulgenki is referred to as either a Lost or a Souless, seeing how they have permanently lost part of their soul.

Still, the artifact of a Kulgenki is difficult to destroy… as it must be destroyed beyond any hope of repair. If a Kulgenki’s artifact was a shield, that broke, the Kulgenki would remain alive, though it would be weakened considerably. It would remain this way until the shield were repaired.

If a Kulgenki falls in battle, its body will fade away and it will return to the artifact until it has regained its strength. Depending on the severity of the wounds it sustained, it may take a day or more to completely recover.

But essentially, the only way for the Kulgenki itself to die is if its artifact is destroyed, or if its Humakin dies and it does not survive the trauma of the incident.
